4.0 étoiles sur 5 Big Study Guide for First Big Security Certification 18 août 2014
Par Bob Monroe - Publié sur Amazon.com
To be successful at any task, you have to practice that task over and over again. To get a good score on a test, you should practice taking that test as much as possible. At least, that is what I've read and seen on TV from experts, musicians and athletes. It has worked for me in the past to take the same test (or simulated test) multiple times before taking the actual examination. This advice doesn't work with an eye exam though.

I just finished reading the new Security+ Authorized Cert Guide written by David L. Prowse. At 777 pages, this is much more than an exam prep guide. As with most test prep books, there are lots of pretest questions at the end of every chapter. The hardback book comes with a DVD that includes three full practice exams. Once you have mastered one exam, take the next exam and then the last one. Life has taught me that unless I score at least 90% on each practice test, I don't bother to take the real exam. I study more until I get that 90%, but that might just be me.

It may sound like a lot of work to master each exam but the whole idea of a certification is to show you have a solid foundation of that subject matter. In the field of cyber security, you can't take a test then flush the knowledge after passing the test. This isn't a college English exam. You will need this information in real life: Every bit of it.

The Security+ certification is a hot ticket right now for many looking to get a foothold in the digital security profession. Mr. Prowse does an excellent job of highlighting which material you will see on the certification test and which information you can expect to see in the real profession. Throughout the book you will see page markers called “Key Topic” that you need to really pay attention to if you want to pass the exams.

The chapters are arranged with your topic and subtopics with all relevant information that you will need for the actual test and real life. There is also a chapter summary like most books but Mr. Prowse has added a few surprises to his book. After the Summary, he adds between 30 and 40 questions written exactly the way you will see them in the exam. Once you are ready to see how well you did on the chapter questions, he adds the answers with explanations as to why that is the correct answer.

He doesn't stop there, though. The author adds Case Studies that allow you to assemble all that information into practicable scenarios. These Case Studies give the reader a chance to think about how the topic and sub topics interact with each other. Case Study Solutions are provided as well that make sense out of a new concept you just learned.

Each chapter continues with recommendations for which video to watch for further training. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the DVD has over 30 training videos included in it. So the chapter Case Studies conclude with a guide to tell you exactly which video to watch and which simulation to attempt. Yes, the DVD also has over 30 Interactive Exercises to reinforce the teaching material. The DVD alone is worth the price of the book.

The exam guide doesn't go deep into most of the topics because the certification doesn't require you to know transparent firewall security techniques or how to create a security policy for BYODs. There is a ton of information stuffed into this book and it is all aimed at getting you trained up to pass the Security+ certification exam. It sits nicely on your desk as a reference guide as well since many of these topic are in the CISSP exam. The CISSP is much more thorough but covers much of the same topics. You will want to get another book for that exam.
If you are just getting started in the cyber security field and this is your first certification, put a paperclip or a piece of tape on page 725, that is the Glossary. There are lots of new terms and everything has an acronym. The Glossary is critical because it will reduce your reading time when you don't have to go back to the beginning of a chapter and figure out what MAC means. Many of the questions will use acronyms so know what they mean if you plan on passing the exam or at least understanding the question.

After 17 chapters, the guide offers the reader a 100 question written practice exam (besides the DVD exams). This where you get to find out how much of the book you need to review some more. The questions are multiple choice and written exactly as you will see them in the certification exam. Don't take these questions lightly. You will want to understand how the questions are written and the way the answers are presented to you. Chapter 17 covers some useful techniques for preparing to take the certification exam. It isn't rocket science but it is important to know which multiple choice answer is a throw-away and which one is a best guess. If you don't know the answer, don't worry because the author includes an quick answer key plus a comprehensive explanation for each question. He also tells you which chapter you might want to read again, based on your answer.

Don't worry, I had to do lots reviewing myself. But maybe that's just me.

BTW, David Prowse also wrote the CompTIA A+ Exam Cram.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent, amazing value, get the hardcopy book. 29 août 2014

Excellent book. 5 stars and more. I read it in three weeks and just passed the exam. Scored 880 out of 900. I saw 6 performance based questions. Not too hard but one was confusing. Do what the author says and flag the weird questions and return to them later, because some of them can really leave you scratching your head. The rest were multiple choice and if you study the book carefully you should ace them.
The book was great. Good read, prepares for the exam, but I learned a lot of real security as well. Get the hardcopy book, the disc puts the book over the top. Videos, simulations which were really helpful for the exam, and most importantly, lots of practice questions. My suggestion, do the chapter questions first, then the three practice exams, then the bonus exam. It works. Also, the author offers 20 more questions on his website, which btw is also a great resource.
All in all, best book out there, amazing value. Get it.

I’ve got this book on Aug 15, 2014 and just trying to get familiar with the book and the chapters at the time before starting a comprehensive studying of the book.
I'm new to Security+ but I would tell you this much that if you are looking for starting point, this is the book. I think this book will help me to get ready for SY0-401 exam. There are 17 chapters plus a practice exam, in addition to the case studies and solutions, along with additional practice exams on the accompanying DVD.
Mr. Prowse has done a great job and the book is clearly targets people who has no previous studies on the subject of Network security. I wish Mr. Prowse has included the PDF format of the book in the DVD so people could study it on their mobile devices.
Well may be we could get that in the email if it was possible. Overall...I'm very pleased with my purchase and thanks to Mr. Prowse.

Do you want to start or advance a career in IT security? If you do, then this book is for you! Author David L. Prowse, has done an outstanding job of writing a third edition of a book that you can study from for the exam, and then keep on your bookshelf for later use as a security resource.

Author Prowse, begins by discussing some basic fundamental security concepts; and, shows you how to think like a hacker, but act like an administrator. Then, the author specifically covers what you need to know, in order to make your operating system strong as steel. He continues by concentrating on Internet Explorer and Firefox, and shows you various ways to secure them. Then, the author discusses network design elements, such as hubs, switches, and routers, and how to protect those devices from attack. He then shows you the ports and their associated protocols that you need to know for the exam; and, how to secure those ports. Next, the author covers one of the most important strategic pieces in your network security design: The firewall. He continues by showing you the network border, also known as the network perimeter. Then, the author focuses on access control models, such as MAC, DAC, and RBAC; plus methodologies such as implicit deny and job rotation. He then covers risk management and assessment. He continues by showing you the various monitoring techniques that applications and IDS/IPS solutions use. Then, the author focuses on the basic terminology of cryptography, including encryption, ciphers, and keys. He then discusses PKI and its components, including private and public keys, certificates, certificate authorities, and the web of trust model. Next, the author covers the rest of the encryption concepts you need to know for the Security+ exam. He continues by discussing how to prevent problems that might occur that could threaten the security of your servers, network equipment, and the server room in general. Then, the author shows you a step-by-step list on how to go about taking the exam. Finally, he covers the strategies for taking the exam, but does not map to any specific objectives.

The number one goal of this excellent book is to help you pass the SY0-401 version of the Comp TIA Security+ Certification Exam. Another goal of this great book, is to offer support for you, the reader.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Great study book!!! 26 juillet 2014

Ordered the book on Tuesday, got it Wednesday. I'm new to Security+ and thus far (and I'm only on Ch. 3), I've found Mr. Prowse's style to be very clear, conversational, and easy to read. My "intro" to S+ has only been through A+ and Network+, but those certs gave a good foundation and this builds on that foundation.

There are 17 chapters plus a practice exam, in addition to the case studies and solutions, along with additional practice exams on the accompanying DVD. Each chapter begins with an intro which details the covered subjects and objectives, and ends with a "Review Key Topics," "Define Key Terms," and at least 20 review questions, with answers and explanations immediately following. What I don't readily see in the book, but which may be on the DVD, is actual commands...i.e. what commands configure the switch/router for the various protocols.

The only "downside" which, I don't believe is a fault of Mr. Prowse's, is there is no .pdf with this particular Deluxe edition...you've got to get the "Premium" edition for another $37. There's also an Academic version for $80 (not sure what the difference is).

Overall...I'm pleased and confident this text will help me attain my Security+ SY0-401 certification.
