There is also a list of things to avoid, such as harmful insects, overdevelopment and protecting your garden from the elements. Though the focus of this book is on growing crops, most of the information is common sense knowledge that will undoubtedly contain tips for home and garden enthusiasts as well.

HASH(0x8e7bf6f0) étoiles sur 5 An instructive book that guides you in planting a garden and making it thrive 15 juillet 2014

With the reawakening of organic gardening, many gardeners and farmers are seeking guidance to come up with a garden that contributes to the health of the plants while requiring low maintenance. This is an instructive book that guides you in planting a garden and making it thrive. I learned a lot about the ideas guiding companion gardening: it refers to planting different crops next to each other, so they support each other in a number of important ways: controlling the attacks of pests, attracting bees and butterflies for pollination, providing habitat for useful organisms, and adding to the crop yields.

The guidelines for companion gardening has been used throughout the world, and and has been documented throughout history. The book offers a chapter about the history of this idea, with examples from different cultures, from China to the indigenous Americas. The author suggests that learning from the past about the best practices is important, because some plants do well when mixed with each other, and other plants actually repel each other. The book lists the benefits of companion gardening, discusses soil and making your own compost, planning the garden and watering it. Then, for each plant—such as apple, apricot, asparagus, basic, climbing beans, beetroot, carrots, celery, chives, cucumber, dill, garlic, leek, lettuce, and others—the book offers winning combinations with other plants, and poor combinations.

Five stars.

As I'm neither a gardener nor a fan of non-fiction, I have based my rating on the quality of the information provided as well as the quality of the writing. While the writing itself was a bit stiff at times, the author provided excellent and thorough information. If I was planning a garden, this would be a valuable resource.

HASH(0x8e7bfc60) étoiles sur 5 Some good info..... 30 novembre 2014

This book might provide some information to a new gardener. I am not impressed with the grammar though. Seriously, almost every word processing program out there has a basic grammar check, use it. It's annoying to have to try and decipher what the author is trying to say.
