A. Conan Doyle wrote these stories in the 1890s. Lighting came from fire (candles, oil lamps, gas). Local travel was by horse or foot. No telephones. Technology has advanced but human nature remains the same. The character of `Sherlock Holmes' was inspired by Doctor Joseph Bell, the famous medical professor in Edinburgh Scotland. Reading the original stories reminds you how good they are, better than any imitators. Greed is the motive for most of these stories; love is minimized. I wonder how many were adapted from long forgotten true crimes? Doyle had a library of famous crimes. His life provided examples for "Dr. Watson" and "Sherlock Holmes".
"The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" has these twelve stories.
A Scandal in Bohemia.
The Red-Headed League.
A Case of Identity.
The Boscombe Valley Mystery.
The Five Orange Pips.
The Man With the Twisted Lip.
The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle.
The Adventure of the Speckled Band.
The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb.
The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor.
The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet.
The Adventure of the Copper Beeches.
"The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes" has these eleven stories.
The Yellow Face.
The Stockbroker's Clerk.
The "Gloria Scott".
The Musgrave Ritual.
The Reigate Puzzle.
The Crooked Man.
The Resident Patient.
The Greek Interpreter.
The Naval Treaty.
The Final Problem.
Of all the new and out-of-print books about Sherlock Holmes, this IS the one to buy!! I was anxious to introduce a younger friend to Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and selected this particular edition to do it with. As a newbie to Mr. Holmes, he found it a pure delight from the enticing Victorian cover art to the very last page. My own personal, and much coveted, copy has been on my bookshelf for 20 years.
Being out of print, it can be had for as low as a $1.50 here on Amazon and well worth the hunt.
