Perfect 12 décembre 2012

Bought this one sight unseen out of desperation, based solely on the cover and examples of the author's work. This really has it all, and best of all, the book itself boasts an attractive design. So many "how to" art books are appalling to look at...

In this book, you'll find a good mix of photographic references (ie, live models), line art and inked figures. In addition to showing you how to draw figures in various still and action poses (the latter including battle stances, guns blazing, etc.), it also covers the basics: faces, hands, facial expressions, hair, the works, which was a pleasant surprise. Also covers various "camera angles," adding depth, and basic scene composition. Couldn't ask for more.

BEST of the comics/artist "how to's" ? 2 mai 2014
Par A Book Is A Wonderous Thing - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
I've owned several "comics artist how to" books, read many others from library etc ... And I'd say imo this one's the best, if you want a general overview of creating most if not all aspects of "I want to draw my own comic / graphic novel ... and publish it." etc

Too many such books are the "draw a circle" and "here're all the bones and muscles" then "See? I can do it, why can't you?" sort.

This one INSPIRES as it teaches.

No ONE book is going to give you all you need (and NO number of books replace dedication and discipline to PRACTICE, and IMAGINATION) ... but if I had to choose the FIRST book to give any aspiring artist (for comics, from superhero to literary graphic novels) ... It'd be THIS one first!

Lots of reprinted content from Famous Artists School 6 janvier 2015

I had high hopes for this book, but immediately I sensed that something was wrong. A LOT of the content I had seen elsewhere.

For decades, there have been these correspondence courses called the Famous Artists Course. (which still exist. Google it) They also have The Famous Cartoonists Course. The courses were written by the top illustrator's in their industry at the time: Norman Rockwell, Al Capp, etc.
There is some original content in this book but page after page after page contains reprinted material. Drawings AND captions are copied verbatim.

The following sections I spotted reprinted content:
Noses in detail
A few notes on the female form
The torso in detail
The limbs in detail
Feet in detail
Law of folds
Clothing the male figure
Clothing the female figure

UPDATE: On pages 58/59, Figure Proportions are copied from "The How To Draw Comics, Comic" drawn by John Byrne and published by Solson in 1985. So even the MOST BASIC figure drawings in this book are copied.

Reprinted from other source? WHO CARES! It's Good Stuff! 8 avril 2015

I love this book! I've seen other reviews that say some of the book has been reprinted from other sources - I say - who cares! The information is really good and worth reprinting (if indeed that is the case). It covers a lot of ground - backgrounds, anatomy, framing. Many, many examples, photos, and illustrations. Plus it has some artist interviews mixed in. Overall this book is near the very top of my "must have" list!

Very useful for anyone looking to move up to the next step 1 janvier 2014

A lot of the how to draw comic book figure books are very simple and it won't take you long to outgrow them. If you're very new one of those can be a great pick-up but if you're looking for somewhere to go next I highly recommend this book. Not only does it give you great tips and practice exercises, photo reference and anatomical guidelines but it also gives you advice on how you can go beyond the book and put together your own drawing tools.

If you're a beginner it would be worth picking up too because there is a lot of sensible and helpful advice here. My only complaint, in a couple of the examples what was being demonstrated wasn't especially clear. What could have worked better as two examples were combined into one but overall it's a very useful book that makes the essential point that the basis of all stylised styles is a mastery of realism and there really aren't that many of those in its genre.
