Great Books for Beginners Who Want to Learn About Wine 16 décembre 2013
Par Patricia B. Smith - Publié sur Amazon.com
In the interest of full disclosure, I need to start by telling you two things. First, before I read this book, I knew absolutely nothing about wine, and second, I read this book because David asked me to proofread it prior to publication.

For years, my brother and two sisters have kidded me about not being a true member of our family because they literally know EVERYTHING about wine and all I knew was that it was made from grapes. Now, after reading this excellent book, I at least know enough to be able to hold my own in a wine conversation with them. When they start talking about the smoky flavor of the grapes, I won't automatically assume there was a fire in the vineyard, but now know that smokiness is a recognized and desirable element crucial to the taste of some wines that is developed by aging in wooden barrels or casks. In my favorite part of the book, David explains smokiness and much more in his excellent and thorough explanation of the different types of flavors and notes that one can find when tasting wines.

The book is very well-organized, informative and easy to understand. It starts by describing the various types of wines, and then the variations on the aging process and types of grapes that give each wine its individual distinctive taste. It takes you through wine tastings and pairings, and even instructs you how to taste wine. You must follow a precise process if you truly want to fully savor all a wine has to offer!

What I like most about this book is its warm and friendly tone. It is engaging and not at all pretentious, as too many books on wine are wont to be. If you are, like me, a newcomer to the world of wine, I can think of no better introduction to help you gain a baseline knowledge and sense of comfort and familiarity about wine than by reading this book.

Now, I can't wait until our next family gathering, when I will take a sip of wine, swirl it in my mouth as David instructs, and then inform my siblings that I can just detect a note of creosote on the back of my tongue! (Yes, believe it or not, some wines do have creosote or tar notes in them, yet another thing I learned from this great little book!)

I ordered two of these for my daughters to learn how to order wine in a restaurant or to pick out a bottle at the store. They liked them and thought they would be helpful.

I loved this book. One of my favorite part is "Understanding the Different Types of Wines". I was surprised to learn so many things in this book. I recommend it.

Very short book that's straight to the point. I almost felt like I was reading a "Wine For Dummies" book because a few chapters broke it down to very simplistic reasoning. In all it was a good book. Though it's not in depth as I'd hoped, it did get my foot in the door for wine tasting.
