It is REALLY only an introduction/overview of what R can do. It just gets you started, make sure that you are willing to look up more advanced documentation on the net. Even though it can read like a laundry-list of things you can do (explained well, by the way) the problems pull you into the material to the depth you need to survive.

The writing style is clear. The problems/projects range from challenging to almost obnoxious (which is great). You can tell the author is a gifted teacher of advanced material in college.

I like that the author varied the subject matter from population dynamics to biophysics. This is how bioscientists should see their subject matter. When I teach pchem I include population dynamics problems just to let the students know that science is science whether it is physics or biology.

Other reasons this book earns five stars:

---excellent introduction to R. I was a novice, now I feel comfortable doing everything from stats to diff eq in R
---plotting chapter is useful, but you will need to delve into R documentation somewhat
---the diff eq section and tools/packages discussed there are very clear
---there are TONS of excellent examples. It is remarkable, actually, in its breadth of coverage. This is possibly the best thing about the book.
---it isn't too in-depth - which allows the impatient to skip around and not get bored - good intro to all these subjects except for...
---the only minus would be the over emphasis, in my opinion, on bioinformatics, but this seems to be a major emphasis of scientific R users. I am a biochemist - I understand bioinformatics is important - but it just happens to bore me.

Anyway, great book. Highly recommended.

This book is very good for the beginner in R language (part I). The detail in other part is not too hard for understanding, and you can follow in R code to understand. But, it's may be too easy for expert in this field. They give the simply and directly concept, but useful.
