Format: CD
Listening to the Gliere Harp Concerto you would probably be shocked to learn that it was written as late as 1938. The orchestral scoring and musical development comes straight from the Russian romantic school of Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov. Melodies and harmonies are straight-forward. The harp greets you right at the outset, making the first musical statement with rolling chords topped by sweeping scales. It is very moving: Rachel Masters very very craftily helps the harp stand out from the orchestral texture, making you hear what is important. Having now said wonderful things about the music and the harp player, I must report that the orchestra falls a bit short. Textures are thin, failing to match the sweeping and rich nature of the music, and intonation is always questionable (there is a dreadful chord in the slow movement). There is a recording of this work by one of London's better orchestras (the LSO) on London records, and I would hope that recording is superior to this one.
The Gliere piece for soprano receives more justice than the harm concerto. Eileen Huse, sustains her lines very well, leaping large intervals effortlessly. Her voice is neither overpowering nor throaty; it glides and blends with the orchestra wonderfully, especially with the woodwinds, every phrase has a beautiful arch. Her entrances on high notes are beautful, so soft sometimes that you don't hear the entrance. WOW, can she sustain the high notes in a beautiful line! She also has great command over articulation. Really incredible, and this is the best performance on the CD. (The last note is the F above the treble staff!!)
The Ginastera Concerto is another masterpiece, and again I wish the orchestra could muster more power and crisper articulation. Ginastera's music is tantalizing, making use of Latin American rhythms and a wide range of percussion instruments. Again, the solo harp part is beautifully written and beautifully played. There is excellent balance between the orchestra and the harp--the harp's presence is always felt and never overpowered. Some of the more mysterious sections are very effective, strings and woodwinds at the opening of the second movement are exquisite.
But in the tutti orchestral sections, it would be nice to hear fuller, sharper, and more driven playing from the orchestra.
A very nice album with great music and great soloists. You will enjoy it.

HASH(0x98a415b8) étoiles sur 5 Charming introduction to rare repertoire 27 avril 2013
Par Jurgen Lawrenz - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
I was logical to bring these two harp concertos together on one disc; but the coloratura piece by Gliere sits pretty ill in this company. In a sense, Gliere sits altogether uncomfortably out of place next to Ginastera, but friends of the harp may not mind it as much. My personal reaction is that I would have preferred another work by Ginastera. The Gliere works are altogether superficial showpieces--pleasant music, but hardly calculated to dig its talons into your soul. Whereas the Argentinean's harp concerto is both a bravura piece for the instrument and a composition of high intrinsic merit.
I have no quibbles with the performance. The Ginastera work has been recorded several times before, but Rachel Masters strikes me as having the full measure of the work, especially in its recherché harmonic and rhythmical textures. Her glissandi and the way she approaches the frequent pianissimo interludes are truly breathtaking. She is abetted here by an exceptionally spacious and beautiful recording, and Hickox provides such thoroughly congenial orchestral backing, it does not leave me asking for more.
By the side of this masterpiece, the Gliere contributions seem somewhat pallid. But the recording does ample justice to them as well, although I may be excused for treating them as "fill-ups" (even though more time is allotted to them than to the "principal" work!).
I cannot conceive of any listener who would not be enchanted by this recording!

HASH(0x98a48774) étoiles sur 5 Ever heard of the "Harp Concerto"? 11 février 2014
Par Eric S. Kim - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD Achat vérifié
Concertos specifically written for the harp are either rare or hardly talked about. It appears that today's society isn't too keen on such a delicate instrument. But when it is given the right amount of creativity, it can be a very unique experience to the ears. For this Chandos CD released in the early 1990's, we are given two examples from two underrated modern composers: Reinhold Gliere and Alberto Ginastera.

Gliere, a composer from Kiev, premiered his Harp Concerto in 1938. At a time when experimentation became the norm in the classical world, Gliere provided a more Late Romantic (but also Impressionistic) approach for his composition. It mixes elements of a typical Western European influence with a moderately Slavic folk style. Tempos generally range from slow to medium. The entire concerto is an almost hypnotic sensation, and the listener right obtain images of Mother nature or a quiet suburban neighborhood (though the nice cover art for this CD may distract one's own imagination). In addition, Gliere's Concerto for Coloratura Soprano & Orchestra is also an exquisite treat for those who can't get enough of this little-known composer.

Ginastera's Harp Concerto, which premiered in 1965, is clearly different when compared to the one from Gliere. It has a more modern touch, with some wild Argentinian flavors added in. It's not as atonal as what you would expect from Schoenberg or Penderecki, but it does sound like it's from the 20th Century. Complex instrumentation and unusual tones and textures are rampant from beginning to end.

Even if I haven't heard of her, I can tell that Rachel Masters does an extraordinary job playing the harp. She is able to overcome some of the sophisticated melodies in both concertos, and her performance overall is almost flawless. Richard Hickox was an incredible conductor, and this CD is part of the reason why he was so respected was a musician. He conducts with clear emotion, and he doesn't let his ego get in the way (he doesn't exaggerate climaxes, for example). The City of London Sinfonia is a small orchestra, but the players are in top form. Eileen Hulse sings very well in the Soprano Concerto. Sound quality from Chandos is, as usual, praiseworthy.
