Présentation de l'éditeur

As long as no one asks and they don’t tell…

First class petty officer Eric Randall is less than thrilled about taking orders to Okinawa. Three long, lonely years on a crappy island that’s thousands of miles from his daughter? Oh. Yeah. Sign him up. But as long as he’s stuck here, he might as well make the best of it, so he discreetly checks out the local gay scene.

Shane nearly drops his drink when the gorgeous, cocky-looking guy strolls into Palace Habu. He buys him a drink, and before long, they’re making out in a booth. Eric is a straight-to-the-point kind of guy and doesn’t want to play games. Since Eric’s idea of not playing games is getting the hell out of there and going back to one of their apartments, Shane is more than happy to go along with it.

What starts as a scorching-hot one-night stand leaves both of them wanting more…until Eric finds out Shane doesn’t just outrank him, he’s an officer. DADT may be repealed, but an officer getting involved with an enlisted man falls under conduct unbecoming.

Still, they can’t resist their mutual desire. There’s no reason anyone has to find out. But secrets have a way of outing themselves.

Warning: Contains two military boys who keep forgetting they’re not supposed to be together. Probably because they never have their uniforms on for any length of time…

Here are some main points that I feel may help in your decision to purchase Conduct Unbecoming.

Well written words. Great dialogue. Two points of view, no misunderstadings on how anyone felt. If you want it there is meaning and passion behind L A Witt's words

Lots of time given to Eric and Shane. Great lead in to let you know how difficult it is moving away from family

How hard it is to be deployed overseas

Nice, realistic relationship building with no instant declarations of love. You learn how they fall for each other, you are not just thrown a bone of - "oh, hey, they're in love, consider yourself told, deal with it."They have many things in common including children from previous marriages, all of which is explained.

Great protagonists

Tremendous backdrop of and detail given to Okinawa

DADT may not be in force anymore but being gay in the services is not good for your career. That is true.

DO NOT be in love with an enlisted man if you are an officer or vice versa

I wanted these guys to get a good ending

Did I day sexy, I know I did, but I had to go there again

If you like 'em alpha, yet flexible, sexy, yet romantic, if you like scorching kissing, the cover does NOT lie, then go for it and read Conduct Unbecoming

If you are looking for short and shallow then you'll be disappointed. This is anything but.

My favourite L A Witt book so far

I wish you good reading!

When Eric Randall and Shane Connelly meet in a gay bar in Okinawa, they both know the other is military but they have no idea one is enlisted and one is an officer. They meet, it's explosive and they immediately fall in lust and in bed. OMG, these two will set your e-reader on fire! Once Eric finds out Shane is an officer he freaks, but Shane who has spent time in Okinawa before convinces him they can enjoy the island and each other if they are discreet. They both know it's a risk but their unbelievable chemistry keeps them reaching out to one another.

Both of these characters just jumped off the page and grabbed me. Both had been married and both have children. Eric has a 16 year old daughter from a high school relationship. He's extremely close to her (and his ex-wife) and he's not happy being away from her for so long. Shane has 7 year old twins, a boy and a girl. His ex-wife cheated on him when he was in Afghanistan. They do not have a good relationship and he rarely sees his children. He only gets to talk with them when they are with his parents. There are so many aspects of this book that made me fall in love with these two men. They have a lot of shared interests with each other (and me); they enjoy history, photography, snorkeling, hiking, wine, and video games. Perfect men, IMHO unfortunately they only have eyes for each other! I cracked up at their Canon versus Nikon debate, laugh out loud funny! The fact that they explored this island was huge to me; so many times people go someplace and never really see it. They are just truly likeable characters. They work hard, play even harder, and are devoted to their careers, their children, and each other. When Eric's daughter, Marie, comes to visit she and Shane hit is off immediately. The three of them spend a lot of time together but when Marie basically tells her Dad she can see why he loves Shane, it throws Eric for a loop. Both men are invested in each other but neither is willing to admit the depth of their feelings.

When Shane is involved with an altercation and Eric (who is an MP) is called into investigate, he knows it's going to be bad. What follows drove me to tears and such a feeling of helplessness. My heart hurt for these two men, yes this is such a well written story that I was emotionally invested in their lives. I have to admire Eric for the decision he made despite how hard it was. Both Eric and Shane struggle to make sense of their feelings towards each other and their impossible situation making this a remarkable story.

L.A. Witt is an amazing author who writes characters with such depth and emotion that they feel real. Conduct Unbecoming left me with such hope, optimism, and faith that no matter how insurmountable the problem, love will conquer all!

The surrounding location was given in excruciating detail. Great detail for those who do not understand the military's ranking system and rules.
If I ever get to Okinawa, I'll make sure this is on my kindle.

L. A. Witt is normally one of my favorite authors. Not this time.

Unlike her other work, this one was almost staggeringly dull. The usual sex scenes (though uninspired and a lot less than hot here) interrupted, primarily, by endlessly detailed travelogues. We get it, Ms. Witt, you know Okinawa. But really, endless chapters on the goods in the shopping districts, visits to all kinds of temples and memorials, and even two surprisingly dull snorkeling outings that were little more than a list of the fish and other sea creatures encountered.

I read the whole book, because I was hoping for something dramatic, or surprising, or exciting, but was left with nothing even interesting.

Let's face it, a book about gays in the military used to be dramatic until DADT was repealed. This book's only conflict was that one of the MCs was an officer, and one an enlisted man, both risking their 20-year-pensions by being together, despite the fact that both had failed their children miserably, by being absentee parents for years-on-end all over the world, courtesy of the Navy.

Pardon the pun, but this one just didn't float my boat...

First Class Petty Officer Eric Randall is a single man who just got stationed in Okinawa, Japan for three years. Having just come back from a tour in the Middle East, he's not very happy about his assignment because it will take him away from his teenage daughter. So, he's angry, determined to hate Okinawa and trying to figure out his new job as a supervisor of security forces (they are called Master-at-Arms or MA's). Add in the fact, he's gay, he wonders how he's ever going to find some action on island with this many military people! For the purposes of this book, DADT has been repealed.

Eric Randall is gay, in the military and he thinks his life is going to be crap for the next three years on the island. Enter Commander Shane Connelly. The two men meet at a gay bar, go home together for a night of scorching hot sex -- this is an L.A. Witt book after all! -- and figure they will never see each other again. Wrong. The next time they are at the bar, they hook up again as their chemistry is off the charts, but when they realize that Shane is an officer and Eric is enlisted, they know they cannot see each other again. (DADT may be gone, but fraternization rules are not.)

But like every other human being on the planet, you tell them something is off limits, and you want it more, so of course, Eric and Shane continue to see each other in secret, hoping they won't get caught and kicked out of the military.

What I really liked about this book was the accurate portrayal of servicemen overseas, how they miss their families, their country, and how hard it can be to adjust in a strange new place where you don't understand the language or the culture. (Even when I was stationed in Italy for three years, I still felt homesick for the States. Now, I just long for real Italian food and wish I could go back!) L.A. Witt was able to convey those emotions to the reader and I think it gave us the setting and atmosphere of the novel.

Second, the sex scenes? Ooh la, la. Is it hot in here? As with every other L.A. Witt book, the sex was scorching and plentiful. While some m/m books are filled with sex scenes that add no purpose or do not move the plot along, that is not the case with Conduct Unbecoming. I really felt the sex between Eric and Shane helped explain their relationship and why they were willing to risk their careers for it and each other.

Third, the setting was perfect. L.A. Witt really took pains to give you a guided tour of Okinawa, exploring all facets of the island as the main characters did. Having said that, about 3/4ths of the way in, I felt like I was reading a Condé Nast travel magazine, so while I enjoyed the guided tour for about 50% of the book, the rest felt forced and caused me to drop my rating by .50 points.

My only other niggle was that I did not understand why Shane and Eric while trying to hide their relationship did not leave the island and fly to Tokyo, rather than stay on Okinawa, where it might be easier to get caught by other military people.

But overall, I really enjoyed this book. L.A. Witt once again was able to transport me to a specific setting and make me experience the emotions of her characters. I highly recommend this book, not just because it brought back some many good memories of my experiences in the Navy, but because it has solid characterizations, a great plot and amazing chemistry between the protagonists. I think you'll enjoy it too.
