Présentation de l'éditeur

Jo Carson has spent months biting her tongue and biding her time working in Mayor Madeline Stratton’s office. That she doesn’t share the mayor’s politics is her secret, and it’s not the only secret she’s keeping in conservative Oklahoma City.

Madeline Stratton believes that you reap what you sow. Yes, she has allowed her marriage to become one of bitter expedience, but she is devastated by the magnitude and viciousness of her husband’s sudden scandal that erupts into off-color headlines and late night comedy routines.

When her young staffer offers a hideout no one will suspect she gratefully accepts—and finds Jo’s sympathy and advice increasingly useful and needed. Until one night feelings far beyond gratitude will no longer go away…

Politics and passion collide in this debut romance from Riley Scott!

This book started off well. I liked the premise and I enjoyed reading the sample I read on the Bella books website. Unfortunately, it doesn't live up to it's promise. As soon as the s*** hits the fan for the mayor everything that follows seems contrived and completely unbelievable. I had a hard time buying that Jacqueline was instantly suspicious of how much time Madeline and Jo were spending together after a whole DAY AND A HALF. I mean, I know the jokes about lesbians and U-haul and everything but the last time I checked the rest of the world does not move at that same speed. Especially concerning assumptions about their until now completely heterosexual mayor and speechwriter. The level of paranoia seems strange and out of place. Then there's Gabe, the lesbian trapped in a man's body. Seriously, the amount of processing he does, the author may as well reveal him to be a woman in drag.

There are far too many points of view. I don't particularly care about what Jacqueline, Gabe, Madeline's husband, and the janitor think about "the situation" (you know, the really crazy situation that two women spent about 24 hrs together after one of them found out her husband was cheating on her and needed a place to get away from the press...very suspicious). I'm kidding about the janitor by the way. He hasn't shared his thoughts with the reader. Yet.

I paid for this book, so I tried to keep going. I skipped paragraphs that were contrived, character points of view that were annoying, anything that seemed to just lose the plot instead of add to the story. I skipped a lot. I finally stopped reading with the revelation of the other woman in her husband's life. I mean, seriously?

Judging by the start of this book, I have to admit that the author does know how to write, but it seems she chose to take the easy way out by writing unnecessary melodrama and cliche plot devices, instead of character development of two interesting main characters. And the characters ARE interesting. I read as long as I did because they were likable. Sadly, however, even the most likable characters fail to keep the reader interested when everything and everyone around them seems completely unrealistic.

One of the weakest written lesbian romance books ever written-poor characters with unlikely plot and ridiculous characteristics of all players

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A very good debut novel! 8 juillet 2014

Conservative Affairs is set in conservative Oklahoma City. Mayor Madeline Statton ran on a conservative Republican 'family values' platform. Her newest staff member and speech writer is Jo Carson. Jo is the daughter of the pastor of a mega evangelical church in Tulsa. She is also a very closeted lesbian, who keeps her thoughts to herself. Madeline and her team are shocked when her husband's affair hits the TV news, and even more so when she discovers with whom he was cheating. Devastated, she hides from the press at Jo's apartment. While she's hiding, her staff scrambles to handle the situation.
Riley Scott has given her readers two very strong, bright and witty women in Jo and Madeline. She has also done a good job of showing the bickering, pushing for favor, and support of their leader that can happen in close working quarters. Part politics, part friendship, and part coming out story, I found Conservative Affairs a strong and enjoyable debut novel.

Liked the political aspect and the twist there but weak on the ending. Needed more development in the relationship between the 2 main characters. Overall it was just ok. It has been a few days since I read it and nothing really stands out about it.
