Présentation de l'éditeur

The Earth is under siege - and no one knows about it, because the invaders erase those whom they consume.

A handful of men and women stand on the border between the mundane and the magical. They have a special spark of soul; not quite enough to be naturally gifted in spellcraft, but greater than the average person, a tiny flame that can ignite incredible potential. They possess the ability to fight back against the Vorid; the ability to become a Contractor.

Daniel Fitzgerald is one of those people, but when duty comes calling, he promptly slams the door in its face. He has no illusions of grandeur. He is not someone special. He wants to go to school and study law. And frankly, he doesn't really like people, and he doesn't want anything to do with magic. He just wants to be left alone.

But when the entire planet is a battlefield, there is no place to run.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A new fiction writer to admire 18 août 2014
Par Taylor Silver - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Format Kindle
I bought this e-book from another site and wanted to share with others how amazing this story was. I was unable to put it down and finished it in a day or two.

What sets this author's writing apart from others in the sci-fi genre is his ability to flesh out characters. His uncanny ability to create spot-on dialogue and his understanding of human nature in general has given rise to one of the most likable protagonists I have ever read about, Daniel Fitzgerald. Beyond the amazing scenes that the author creates in time-frozen US cities, the book treks a larger theme of the lessons that young adults learn about general human nature, most notably that most people in power will do anything to maintain that power.

This story is a gritty look at human nature in an alternate universe. I cannot wait for the next installment in this series.

I agree with Taylor Silver's take on it, especially the part about how people with power will cling to it with all they can.
Like an ant on a branch in the ocean.

Additionally, I'd like to add three things:

1. The dialogue couldn't seem less forced if it were ad-libbed on Whose Line Is It Anyway -- it's spontaneous, but it's GOOD.
2. The protagonist is a deadpan snarker, though he leans more towards the snark part than the deadpan part.
3. The next book is, according to the author, due out in 2015 (he hasn't specified exactly when).

This book does make use of curses, swears, expletives, 'bad words' (or w/e you want to call them) with a realistic frequency. In a battle for life-and-death, characters don't say "Darn!", and, likewise, when in a regular situation, characters don't curse like sailors.

Its not my normal genre but I do read every Harry Dresden book as it comes out. Its not that I ignore magic themes, its just most of them aren't as good as the old masters like Piers Anthony and that generation. They wrote adult magic like Dresden, whereas alot of the current stuff is light young adult teen material. This novel in my opinion is young adult with a side of romance. It is written and edited very well and reads easily. The story is good as are the characters and motivations, descriptions of places and objects could use some work though. I was hard to visualize many of the bad guys etc. It does drag in a few places with party's, games and conversations that didn't add much to the story line. All in all it was a fun read. I dont know that I would make all the choices he made, but it is where the author wanted to go for the next book, and that does look more interesting with more action.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 5 Stars for the Dialogue Alone 19 septembre 2014

This was an excellent book. The dialogue was simply incredible, witty, sarcastic, believable and awesome.

I also particularly liked the fact that the character, whose power grew in leaps and bounds, was profoundly clever. He used just the right amount of leverage to turn situations to his advantage, allowing him to take control of people trying to dominate him, without revealing his magic. He didn't use his power to cheat his way out of the situation.

My only complaint is that the end of the book was so focused on setting up for the next books. Mr. Ball, anyone who reads that far is a fan, and will definitely read your next book. I certainly will. But I think that a lot of what took place at the end could have been pushed into the early pages of the next book and it would have made the ending so much stronger.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Outstanding New Story, Great Read! 4 septembre 2014
Par Amazon Customer - Publié sur Amazon.com

This new author is off to an outstanding start with this first novel. It is engaging, entertaining and a must read story. It starts at a smooth pace that builds as the tale develops and before long matures into one of those "I can't put it down" books. The well developed, fast paced story stands alone, but clearly sets the stage for a new world and follow on novels.

The book is a solid blend of entertainment that combines the energy of a high voltage Marvel Comics action movie with a whimsical sense of fantasy and science fiction adventure. For good measure, it throws in a healthy dose of Aliens - shoot 'em up - "us versus them" intensity. This talented author blends this mix into a unique new world.

The novel's simple, easy to read style belies some of the deeper themes in the story. The created moments shift seamlessly between action and dialog. Daniel Fitzgerald, a street smart teenager, from a rough family is the protagonist. Through Daniel the reader explores human nature, relationships, choices, consequences, politics and power against the background of a threat to all humanity. The story telling never loses its stride as the themes evolve.

Bottom line, this is novel is entertaining and fun to read while leaving the reader with some serious themes to ponder. 5 Stars. Will definitely read the next novel as soon as it arrives.
