Présentation de l'éditeur

Vy Aleknos is the leader of a hawk shifter flock. Openly gay since he was a teen, Vy is proud and self-assured on the outside, while secretly worrying he’ll be forced to spend his life alone because two males can’t be mates. When bear shifter Robert Cimino appears in Vy’s small town, Vy realizes his concerns were unfounded — he has a male mate, and a sexy, dominant one to boot.

Robert is a bear shifter who refuses to shift. Immediately attracted to Vy, he deviates from his normal pattern and seeks more than a one off with the powerful, bristly hawk. But Robert’s affections are rooted in his human form, and when Vy discovers Robert doesn't recognize him as his mate, he pulls away. If Robert wants to stay with Vy, he must convince a man deeply ruled by his animal instincts to give their relationship as humans a chance.

Vy Aleknos lives in the small town of Elk River, Colorado. He is twenty eight and has a construction company. He is also a hawk shifter, the kaur of the Elk River ket. The kaur is the ‘alpha/leader’ and the ket is the hawk equivalent of the ‘pack/clan.’ He’s gay, some of the ket and some of his family don’t like it, most are good with it. His immediate family have no issues and his father, who was the kaur prior to Vy, makes it very clear that no one is to be intolerant, he won’t stand for it.

One day in town, Vy smells his mate - very much hoping his mate isn’t female. Fate can be fickle, but he will accept what it has in store for him because, even though he is a contemporary man, he believes very strongly in his roots and the ket.

Robert Cimino works with nature, he lives in nature, and he wanders around. A lot. More specifically, he is a vegan bear shifter who meditates, does yoga and is quite zen-like. Oh yes, he also doesn’t shift. Ever. Robert feels he is a man first and foremost, not a bear. This comes to light after Vy and Robert have sex. For the first time Vy lets go and submits to another man, and it’s beautiful. But that feeling doesn’t last long. When Vy flies out to surprise Robert where he is working, Robert doesn’t recognise Vy in his bird form, thinks he is just another hawk. Mates always recognise one another. He now learns that Robert keeps his animal half under wraps so his mate bond is not activated. He can’t know Vy is his mate. Vy believes he can only ever be just another man, another conquest to Robert. Vy feels Robert coursing in his veins but Robert won’t be able to feel that. Sure, Robert’s scent changed after they were intimate, but only Vy will know it and feel it. Not Robert. This totally devastates Vy.

If you like Cardeno C and Mary Calmes, but you aren't so fussed about shifter books, I say don't worry and jump on in because this really is a contemporary romance more than a full-blown shifter read.

It takes good writing to pull a reader back from thinking, ‘will I or won’t I continue reading this,’ to then giving said reader no choice other than to give the book 5 stars. Cardeno C and Mary Calmes did just that with me. I struggled initially with Vy often saying, ‘I’m the kaur of the ket,’ with the ket’s quick-to-jump-to-conclusions attitude about Robert. However, all my reservations with Vy flew out the window as he redeemed himself and I understood his position and him. 'Robert the Bear' was charming. So I ended up thoroughly engrossed in the MC’s and their story. It is a story full of love and emotion and strong characterisations. The sex is earth-movingly high on the sexual Richter Scale. Even if you are not a huge shifter lover there is a lot to like about Control as a contemporary MM romance. If you do like a paranormal with an emphasis on shifters and romance, some engaging MC’s, and a few interesting secondary characters, then I recommend Control very highly to you. Control is beautifully named, the cover is beautifully crafted and it all suits the writing to a tee. 5 Stars.

"Please let me show you what it's like to be cherished, Vy. I promise you won't regret it."

Okay, so there was never a doubt in my mind that I would love this book. Not even one. I'm a rabid fan of both authors, and when I heard they wrote a story together my little fangirl heart nearly exploded. I loved Vy. He is all alpha but not how you'd expect, his vulnerability and surrender triggered all sorts of yummy scenes. Robert... OMG, the grabby hands, but he's more than a toppy bear. I'm not gonna break the story down into who did what, when and how. I'm sure some talented reviewer will mosey along and take care of that sooner than later. I just wanted to put it out there that I thought it was insane amazing, and that it's going on my comfort food shelf and will be re-read many, many, many more times. Highly Recommended!!!

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Pack dynamics and interesting shifters made this an enjoyable romance with some great action sequences. 20 avril 2014

Vy is arrogant on the outside, but lonely on the inside. A hawk shifter, Vy is excited to finally find his mate in Robert, even though Robert is a bear. Unfortunately, Robert isn't interested in shifting, and, therefore, doesn't recognize Vy as his mate. Vy struggled with wanting to be with Robert while at the same time feeling very frustrated that Robert wouldn't recognize him as his true mate. Instead, Robert is just interested in Vy as a person. This leads to the biggest conflict between these two mates, and gives the story an interesting twist on the instant love we usually see with mates. Fortunately, Robert was an amazing and patient person who was willing to try to work through this issue with Vy. Robert was always going out of his way to help improve the world around him and take care of Vy. Vy matured quite a bit during the story with the help of Robert and Vy's father. This allowed him to truly step up to being the pack leader. By the end, it was obvious Robert and Vy were meant for each other.

I enjoyed the focus on the different issues with the pack members, and the trouble that they were having with another pack. This aspect of the story gave Robert, an outsider, a chance to prove he was trustworthy to the pack.

The one little thing that bothered me was the constant interruptions between the characters as they were talking to each other. It's a pet peeve of mine when people interrupt each other in real life, so seeing it happen in the story distracted me.

As a huge fan of shifter stories, I was excited to see two of my favorite authors write this story together.

WARNING SPOILERS!!! but this book is bad enough who really cares!

I hated this book! Let me tell you why:

This book is so frustrating to read, Vy is supposedly this great leader, and the most important thing in his life is watching after his flock, even over his mate. The author just keeps going on about how great a leader Vy is. But in reality he is just a spoiled self centered brat! He never stops to think of his flock, hes always on the defensive and is in general nasty to everyone he sees! Heck hes even nasty to his best friend, who for some reason I can't figure out is loyal to this jerk!

I do like Robert, hes calm, not very bright, but actually try's to help Vy, but Vy is nasty to him too!

Towards the end of the book I just couldn't take it anymore! Vy goes to this other alpha, who he was fighting with earlier and is only
mentioned in passing and asks this rival alpha if he should abandon his flock and run off with his mate! Yeah, like thats what a real leader would do, just go tell the rival wolf pack that your even weaker then you already appeared!

This book is just frustrating! Save your money, there are other shifter books out there that are way better then this!

Well, the good news is this is considerably better than “Floodgates.” But, honestly, would that be so hard?

The even better news is that there is no jerky ex-boyfriend. There is no 200 page discussion on said jerky ex-boyfriend.

And I just realized there is no 18-25 page discussion on how absolutely, positively wonderful the smaller of the 2 MCs is (Vy). Actually, he's kind of a melodramatic jerk.

And only once in the book did Vy express that men rarely come on to him - cause, you know, he's super PLAIN. (No, you're not, dork.)

There were four eyebrow waggles (I almost missed them in “Floodgates”) and there are no pea coats - but there is a lined barn coat & a fully lined denim jacket. Why do we need to know that these items are lined?

Also, the cop in this is a supporting character.

Oh, and there were several plot threads that seemed to go nowhere. Hello? What happened with the wolves? That event took place off-page, which is annoying, but you don't find what actually happen with the wolves until maybe at 70%?

Aaand, there were at least 2 or 3 episodes where Vy drifted off into exposition or some kind of flashback, when whoever he's talking to in the present sits there counting their toe hairs until they finally yell him into attention. Dude needs to take some ginko baloboa.

I did like the conflict between the two characters: Vy is the kuar (leader) of his ket (pack) and as a gay man worries about maintaining “control” and proving his leadership abilities to his pack. Robert (the bear shifter) chooses never to shift (always remains in “control”) because he's scared of hurting people. He's a loner who moves from place to place. Vy has only ever topped in relationships because he must always be the alpha, but he longs to give in and submit. Robert is a total top and he wants to do nothing more than cuddle his "little bird" and [make violent love to] him into submission. Vy believes fated mates & destiny are everything and Robert believes that a man is what he makes of himself in spite of his destiny.

All this is great, I just wasn't fond of Vy's reaction to it all. When he discovers that Robert has gooey feelings for him, but doesn't recognize him as a mate, he freaks out and runs away. Then he acts like a super jerk, gets into fights & gets drunk. He refuses to talk to Robert or listen to anything he has to say. Then when he finally does start talking to him again, he will not allow Robert to FINISH A SENTENCE. This is typical Mary Calmes, the MC decides that he's not wanted & so just carries on, smiling bravely, refusing to listen to anyone around him. Dude, that's not brave, that's being a jerk.

I also felt Cardeno C & Mary Calmes lacked cohesion as joint authors. It was jarring to switch back & forth between the two narrators (Vy is clearly penned by Calmes & Robert by Cardeno C). For me it was a similar feeling to watching Tom Cruise in a movie; I can never forget that he's Tom Cruise playing a character instead of getting lost in the idea that's he's -- I don't know -- an astrophysicist late for a date with a beautiful garbage collector. I wanted to relax into a combination of these two authors -- and I honestly thought that would blend well, they each write such sweet reads -- instead it just felt jumpy & lacked consistency.

What saved this book for me is Robert. He's such a sweetie and I loved how he wanted to take care of Vy. He wanted to be Vy's home & comfort. He also wants to [make violent love to] his brains out which is always enjoyable to read. I loved when he was explaining to Vy why exactly he thought two people choosing each other because they liked each other was more important than fate or destiny. It took Vy awhile, but when he finally accepts Robert as is they are so sweet together. I could really see Robert as the Mama Bear who calms Vy & literally smooths his feathers. The ending, also, is pure sugar sweet, just like I like it.

This is not the best Mary Calmes book (see the Matter of Time series) and it’s not the best Cardeno C. novel (see the Home series). It’s just okay and you can definitely find better books elsewhere on Amazon.
