Présentation de l'éditeur

Cook Japanese is a collection of 53 recipes for tasty yet simple Japanese-style meals suitable for the whole family. Accompanying the recipes are short stories and anecdotes on daily family life, from weekends, school holidays and examinations, to special celebratory events such as New Year and birthdays. This book is perfect for anyone looking to go beyond typical Japanese restaurant fare to delve into the heart of Japanese food and family traditions.

Biographie de l'auteur

Tamako Sakamoto has been a columnist with the Daily Yomiuri (recently renamed the Japanese News) for the past 7 years, delighting readers with her essays on the daily life of her family of six in her cooking column, Taste of Home. Before this, she worked for the Japan Times, writing another cooking column, Family Cooking. A mother of three boys and a girl, Tamako finds inspiration for her column juggling the responsibilities of housework, preparing numerous lunch boxes and cooking dinner for her family including her parents on a daily basis.

After testing the recipes, I've found them to be satisfying and not too difficult. A great fan of Japanese food with a number of cookbooks, I usually find a few recipes per that I can deal with and remain daunted by the rest. Tamako Sakamoto has provided a nice collection of Japanese homestyle dishes that just about any cook can make and enjoy. Instructions are clear, measurements are in both grams and ounces&cups. Portions are large and some of the ingredients may be unavailable without an Asian supermarket in the vicinity, but recipes can be halved and substitutions here and there work pretty well. I like to make the whole recipe and have it on the table for dinner twice. Nobody seems to mind.

Each recipe in this cookbook--each with its own photo and punctuated by more photos of Tamako and her family--comes with a story, and while they introduce Japanese culture, the thread that pulls it all together is the universal tale of a busy mother raising a family. This might be another reason the recipes are so accessible. As I make them, I think about her family and my own. There we are in the kitchen together--cooking and trading stories.

I love this cookbook! The recipes are delicious, not hard to make, and are interesting and unusual. The author, Tamako, explains this is Japanese home style cooking - meant for easy prep for a busy family - not fancy restaurant fare but rather comfortable and delicious. Though I will add that being Japanese the food is still beautifully presented :) The cookbook is also full of beautiful photos of the food and charming stories of the author's family and cooking adventures, so it makes a very nice gift too. I just bought copies for Mother's Day for my mom and sisters and everyone loved it.

I first found this book at my friend Q's house in Kamakura, where she said the recipes were amazingly simple yet so hearty and delicious. She was right! This is going to be the book I recommend to all my American friends who want to learn how to cook "Japanese"- the food that is cooked at home- not the sushi and teriyaki you get at restaurants. I appreciate that the ingredients used are available in the US....at least in the cities.

One of my favorite cookbooks with the best Japanese recipes. Don't hesitate to use it. Can't wait to make chawanmushi.
