Présentation de l'éditeur

Fixing the home can heal the heart—if you can find all the pieces.

Police officer Samuel Briggs is getting to know the people on his new, third-shift beat, but he’d prefer they not know too much about him—or the painful past that drove him away from New Mexico to start fresh in small-town Stratton, PA.

All he wants is peace, a manageable routine, and time to fix up his project home. There’s no room in his broken heart for a new relationship. It’s crowded with too many memories. But there’s something about the Dixie’s Cup short-order cook, who’s flirty one minute, distracted the next, that piques Sam’s interest.

Part-time cook, part-time hardware salesman and full-time handyman Rey King lives to work—but not because he loves it. Relationships? No time. Until one glance at Sam’s haunted eyes sends a plumb line straight to his wary heart.

One afternoon of impulsive, no-strings sex begins to grow into a cautious friendship. But when Rey is seriously injured protecting a friend, the cracks in their already shaky foundation begin to show. Falling in love wasn’t in either man’s recovery plan…and this time, the risk could be too great.

Warning: Contains one emotionally wrecked cop, one angsty short-order cook, a few too many secrets, some meddling small-town folk, and plenty of hot man-on-man action.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Satisfying 19 septembre 2012

If you are more interested in a satisfying story than in the sex scenes in a book, you'll appreciate this book. Sure, there are some erotic scenes, but you could almost skip over them to find out what happens next to the two men in this story. At 246 pages, the book is a respectable length and a great evening of reading. I cared about the characters... a police officer trying to move on from deep pain, and the short order cook just trying to survive. The slow romance that happens as the result of two people in need of healing and companionship, satisfies all of those warm, fuzzy needs we have as fans of romance novels.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Kept me reading till the end. Very well conveyed feelings. 9 juin 2012

This writer does write well, conveying her guys feelings very well. The pain, the regrets, the insecurities, the doubt to hope, feelings expressed convincingly, as we follow Sam and Rey in their short but impactful journey of falling in love and most importantly staying together. I like that the writer splits her story into two, the first part told from Sam's view and the second part from Rey's view. We get to understand and know both guys well and care for them. Their pasts are revealed progressively through the story, pasts which drive the story as much as the present happenings. The last part did take me by surprise but then the writer did set it somewhat up in the beginning. Maybe the angsts could have been toned down in the back half. Is Sam's teenage ordeal and the impact on them later really necessary ? Also is there a need to focus that much on one teenage girl? However I like the way the writer handles Rey 's present predicament. Most is not resolved in his life. There is no miracle but there is hope. The epilogue could have been more. I get the feelings that the writer did want to say more but limited by the publisher ? Definitely watching out more from this writer.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Really enjoyed this book, already preordered the sequel! 4 novembre 2012

I really enjoyed this book and the characters, there is enough information to draw you in, but enough it kept back to equally draw you in.

Samuel is a police officer making a new start across the country from where he lost his life partner. He is out to a few people at work, but had not been planning on really coming out until he'd been in town a while and got to know the people. Until he meets Rey...

Rey is a cook at the 24 hour diner in town, he works hard, keeps to himself and had not planned on anything past meeting needs when necessary, then Samuel walks in.

Both characters are dealing with baggage from their past, but the connection between them is very hard to ignore. They have to face things they have been avoiding, but not without misunderstandings, assumptions, their past pain that holds them back in their day to day lives and allowing themselves to open up to vulnerability and maybe not having to face everything alone.

I had the sequel preordered before I was half way through because I enjoyed the characters so much. No one was perfect, as the song says, everybody's got a story and the supporting characters are as well written as the lead characters.
Not to mention, any book that can make me cry because I care about what's happening is a good book to me!

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Good initial plot, but too many twists (SPOILER ALERT) 13 août 2012

Although I liked the book's the main characters, thought it was well written and it kept me engaged, I also thought it had at least three plot twists too many. I also would've also preferred a less focus on the Reign's female co-worker (it just seemed like a distraction, rather than adding to the story). And speaking of "Reign" (a.k.a. "Rey") I thought several of the character names were way too pretentious and unnecessarily Harlequin romance-like -- which kept pulling me out of the story. "Tomkin"? Seriously? Unless he's a wood sprite or a children's book character, no grown man should be named "Tomkin" -- especially not in this story. And I, generally, don't believe that all story lines have to neatly wrapped by the end of a book. BUT this story felt so unfinished at the end that it seemed like the author was just trying lay down the foundation for a sequel -- which seemed a little too obvious.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 "Cost of Repairs is an emotional, sometimes painful read, but a rewarding one." 28 janvier 2013
Par M. Nix - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Format Kindle
Police officer Samuel Briggs is starting over. All he wants to do is fix up the old house he bought, meet new people on his beat, and forget the past. He's not worried about finding anyone. Then he meets the cook at the Dixie Cup diner, and right away he's both attracted and intrigued.

Rey King doesn't have time for anything but work. Drowning in debt and hiding his pain over the past, he doesn't want to start a relationship. He's happy to act on his attraction to Samuel, but nothing more.

Sex turns into a friendship that could become more. When Rey is hurt and Samuel wants to help, things begin to fall apart. Can Samuel and Rey learn to trust each other, or will their pasts prove to be too much for them?

Cost of Repairs is the healing journey of two men who have been broken by life. Samuel is trying to move on after a terrible event that nearly destroyed him. He's moved to a new place and taken a new job. Protective, caring, and kind, he is a great police officer. He makes new friends on his beat, but he's still lonely. He initially succumbs to Rey's offer of no-strings sex because of the loneliness and his desire to move on. Afterward, he wants to be with Rey again. Tentative feelings begin to grow in Samuel's heart, despite his uncertainty. When Rey gets hurt, Samuel wants to help, but Rey pushes him away at every turn.

Rey has spent the past few years doing little more than working himself to the bone. His multiple jobs are a necessity if he wants to pay rent and chip away at his massive debt. Time spent with Samuel is a welcome release of stress, but he doesn't want it to be anything more. He tries to keep his distance. After he's hurt, Samuel won't be pushed away, and Rey has to accept help for once, even if he doesn't want to. He'll have to decide how much he's willing to risk when Samuel's past intrudes on their present.

Cost of Repairs is told in two parts. The first part is from Samuel's third-person point of view. It's easy to sympathize with Sam. He's been through a terrible loss, and survived it in the only way he knew how. I wanted to see him find happiness. Rey, despite his prickly and standoffish nature, was obviously a good man, so I was rooting for them right away. Both men are cautious, leading to a slow pace I really enjoyed. Their pasts are revealed in bits and pieces rather than in huge, awkward chunks. The second part of the story, from Rey's perspective, fleshes out Rey's character. The reasons for his behavior are understandable, even his constant attempts to push Sam away. The last section of the story is all action and angst, but none of it felt forced.

Cost of Repairs is an emotional, sometimes painful read, but a rewarding one. Two good men who were dealt a bad hand by fate finally get something good again, and that's definitely worthwhile.
