To me, this a better told story than Sienna and the Girl in the Box Series, at least for the four I've read in this series compared to the three in that one. The Sanctuary Series reads like a massively multiplayer online game, which focuses primarily on one guild. To anyone who has played an MMO, the story will be familiar. I'm not sure if any author has tried this format and it was refreshing. You have a Good guild, an Evil Guild and a bunch of smaller guilds that interweave through the tales. There is a kinda lame romance tale thrown in too, though the author is horrible at it. The protagonist Superman (Cyrus) has multiple relationships and he sucks at all of them. The first one is the only one that even has a microbe's chance of being interesting. The battles are very will written when the author focuses on guild raids and very dull once he branches out to military campaigns. There is a lot of dead writing where the same things happen over and over. This will not be as noticeable if you read the books over several weeks. I read all seven books over a three day weekend. Yes, I'm lame.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 The Adventure Continues! 16 août 2013

When I first finished this book, I was shaking my head and thinking, "What happened???" That is what happens when you are emotionally involved. I was lost for minute, which would annoy me, but then I got my bearings and took another look... These books, this story, is so skillfully laid out. While many of us can't tell a joke without getting confused, Robert J. Crane has weaved together and overlapped amazing stories with complex characters that not only leave you wanting more, but have you going back to discover what you might have missed the first time. I LOVE IT!

Could you just pick up the Crusader and read it through without reading the first of the series? Yes, of course but then you would be missing out on how these stories are laid out, small pieces of the puzzle revealed here or there in a thought, or look by a character. Unraveling the mystery of these characters and their stories is its own adventure!
3.0 étoiles sur 5 Good story, damaged characters 6 octobre 2015

I read book four after reading the first three. I wanted to follow the story. And the story was pretty good, as far as fantasy genre goes. However, I was somewhat put off by the way the two principal characters (Cyrus and Vara...and especially Cyrus) were "developed" (or, more appropriately, damaged) in this fourth book.
Cyrus - although his guild's military leader (equivalent to a general) and commander of thousands of troops - comes across as an immature teen-ager in his supposed reactions to Vara's communicated perception that they have no future together. He mopes. He develops an "attitude". He is supposedly "torn" by the experience. In short he has a series of immature, childish reactions which bear no relation to how he was being developed as this "greatest warrior" personality.
This plagues the novel throughout and serves as a distractor (a bad one) throughout the book. I don't know if this was done to attract immature younger audiences that might identify with this foolishness or whether the characteristics are merely a reflection of the author's experiences or personality or if there is another "reason" for this poor depiction of a supposedly great warrior's personality in matters of "love". But whatever the reason, it damages the book to a certain degree.
The storyline itself is pretty good. There is variety: invasion... new lands...new people... development of older characters... new enemies... betrayal...and so on. And the story is written in a way that "grabs" you. Were it not for the foolish distractor mentioned above, this could be a five star book. As it is, I took off two stars for the "childish reaction" element. If you can ignore the "she doesn't see a future for us" babble and corresponding reactions, and you like fantasy, then you'll probably enjoy the book.
2.0 étoiles sur 5 Very disappointing 4th book 20 janvier 2015

Wow. First three were excellent. This one was a labor to read. Take everything good about the first three in the series and this one about ruined it. Started to stop several times. Killed the relationship aspect of book and turned it into a long book of smut. Very disappointed. Length of book wasn't the problem - completely changing the characters and relationships was. Not sure I will read the next one. No hurry anymore for sure. Two stars only because of first three books. Shame.
