This book follows in the tradition of Coffman’s first bestseller, First, Break All the Rules, in that the secrets come from the study of high performing organizations, where culture drives results. Effective culture is like a six lane suspension bridge, and poor culture is like a swinging bridge strung together with fraying rope.

The practices of extraordinary cultures and their uninspiring counterparts emerged through decades of work and research. The qualities that make a culture excellent are about 80 percent generic and 20 percent unique. Competitive advantage results from the 20 percent that slam-dunks the brand promise to the customer.

Coffman and Sorensen, seasoned, highly experienced researchers and consultants, usher in a new perspective which challenges some bedrock, but time-worn organizational practices, from the “little boxes” on the organizational chart to the employee survey and the bureaucratic veneer. Some of our practices are obsolete, but more to the point, our methods no longer match to goals we need to achieve.

After I read this book, I was actually a little angry. Upset at myself for spending money on the other business books that I have in my library. Honestly, the exceptional way that facts and conclusions are drawn upon lead the reader through quite an extraordinary journey. The explanation of how culture is formed allows the reader to understand why their actions make an impact regardless of where they reside in an organization. It sheds light on not only why culture matters, but how to really impact it.

If you are a leader, a consultant, or simply someone that works in a corporation you need to read this book. It will give you insight on why your organization works the way that it does and provides a blueprint on how to help it be the high-performance organization want it to be.

This book is an engaging discussion regarding the very heart of an organization. I most appreciate how I can both view and influence the culture of any organization I may be associated with. How consciously looking for the talent that others and myself possess can so powerfully infuse energy into any project I may be a part of. It's encouraging to think that what I learn and apply from this pleasantly candid publication can change the everyday nature of my job and enable me to produce successful outcomes. I'm deeply excited, and I'm encouraging all to read this book. We all deserve to love our jobs and see good for all our effort. A great culture makes that possible! p.s. - The print version is easy on the eyes, and audio version is just delightful to listen to.

I found myself gasping at the insights: it was like a surgeon's guide to cultural disease in organisations. You can pinpoint the disturbance areas, and in some cases, remove them - like a surgeon. However, cultural issues turn out be more viral than a simple local infection, and a more holistic intervention is often required.

I gave this book 5 stars for its thorough mapping of the factors that create (and destroy) organisational culture and hence results.

However I found myself wanting more 'how tos' at the end - in terms of identifying cultural patterns and energy, and what to do to gain alignment between cultural energy and strategy. There were some good starting questions to ask, just not the next steps in building strong culture.
