Présentation de l'éditeur

For more than four hundred years, the Curse Keepers guarded the barrier between the human and spirit realms. All that changed the day Ellie Lancaster met Collin Dailey. Prophecy demanded they defend the world from evil…even as it ignited a passion that threatened to consume them both.

Now Ellie faces a frightening new life, abandoned by the man she loves and tormented by malevolent spirits unleashing their vengeance upon the earth. Her only shot at protecting humanity—and herself—from the demon scourge is to claim the mark of the god Ahone as her own. Finding it means trusting Dr. David Preston, a handsome professor of Native American studies whose skepticism is surpassed only by his attraction to Ellie. Together they must finish what the Curse Keepers began, defying the forces of darkness to face hell on earth—and unlock the truth of Ellie’s destiny.

I was lucky enough to read an early copy of this book and I loved it just as much as the first. It was a terrific continuation of the series and left me chomping at the bit for more!

Swank writes an excellent urban fantasy romance around the small towns of Manteo and Wanchese, NC. She has a talent for combining historical elements, Native American folklore & legend, and a modern-day adventure into a fast-paced story that had me turning pages long into the night.

Have you ever felt you’ve learned more from fictional books than you did in school? Well, that’s how this series has captured my heart -- it taught me fascinating historic details as well as relayed a great story. I’ve vacationed several times in the area she sets the novels and was immediately captivated by the book’s feel of Roanoke Island.

I eagerly await the next installment – great job, Ms. Swank!

Ellie is back, Collin is back, and their soul bond is still there, but wait until you meet David! Ellie, Daughter of the Sea and Collin, Son of the Land had a sacred duty to uphold, one that was handed down through the generations, keep the demons of hell from entering the human realm, deceived by Collin, Ellie inadvertently aided in the escape of several demons who are threatening not only the world, but Ellie’s life and the lives of those she cares about. David is a professor who is well-versed in Native American folklore and has come to see the phenomena that is the re-appearance of the Roanoke Colony. Does the secret to saving the world and banishing the demons lie within this long lost town or in the words that Ellie’s father tried to tell her so long ago before his death. Animals are mutilated, people are dying and Ellie is the common denominator, does this also make her a suspect? Who would believe her if she told the authorities what she knows?

In a battle of good vs evil, Ellie has two gods who want her, but to give in would seal the fate of the world. Can she accept David’s help and risk his life? Can she accept there is more between them than ancient legends? With her heart and life on the line, Ellie is a formidable foe who just needs a break and for things to go her way.

Denise Grover Swank has hit another one out of the ballpark! The Curse Breakers, book two in The Curse Keeper Series took book one and exploded upon it in waves! Picking up where The Curse Keepers left off, the turmoil is ratcheted up a few notches as well as the tale itself! With tidbits of back story thrown in seamlessly, the danger to the world and to Ellie is now off the charts. The best part? Ellie is now determined, matured and willing to seek out help from any source she can. To say Ellie is now an ally you would definitely want on your side would be an understatement! Ms. Swank has tossed in sturdy characters that feel so realistic, with real emotions, agendas and their own determination makes this one fascinating read, filled with plots, subplots and sub-subplots that spider out from the main storyline like a shattered windshield. She writes with a sense of tension and excitement that pulls like a magnet on fire. With never a wasted word, action or scene, from start to finish The Curse Breakers is a wild ride into fantasy, myths and legends as the human realm and the spirit realms collide with often unspeakable horror.

I received an ARC edition from 47North in exchange for my honest review.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 3.5 stars- a great series but slower than the first book 17 juin 2014

Note: This is the 2nd book in the Curse Keepers Series. If you are new to the series, check out my review of Book 1

I was super excited to read the second book in the Curse Keepers series. I loved the first book. I thought it was so unique. How many times do you get to read a book about ancient Algonquin spirits that are tied together with the reappearance with the lost colony of Roanoke. This is the second series that I have read about the Roanoke colony and it is still a unique subject to me because both series are so different. (Roanoke Vanishing by Auburn Seal is great as well.) I absolutely loved the Curse Keepers. I thought it was fast paced and fascinating. I really enjoyed the second book as well, but it was slower paced than the first one. I thought The Curse Breakers was great in terms of the supernatural mystery as well as the ties with the actual mystery with Meriano’s men. But in terms of actual plot advancement it dragged a bit.

Ellie dealt with that awful betrayal and loss of her father in the end of the first book, so she is a little less trustful in this installment, and more than a little hurt. I really felt for her. She is still in the thick of this curse, and she is in constant danger at night. It has to be a lot to deal with all alone. Colin is in this book a lot less. I have a feeling that will change more in the next book, but because of certain events in the story he didn’t have nearly as much page time. Ellie doesn’t know who to turn to, but she needs to figure out a way to put Ahone’s symbol on her so that she will be protected by him. So she seeks out a young professor who is an expert in Native American’s. He became a much bigger character in the book than I was expecting after their first, rather rude, meeting.

I was really glad that David became so important in Ellie’s quest, because he turned out to be such a sweetheart. And very helpful. I can’t imagine having to go through this big bad scary all alone like Ellie, so it was nice to see someone there for her- helping her out. I’m still not sure where I fall in the whole Collin v. David situation, but that is something that I will defer my opinion on until the next book.

The Curse Keepers series is a really interesting series. One that I enjoy and will continue to read. The Curse Breakers was a good installment, but it did suffer a bit from second book syndrome in terms of pacing. It just dragged and felt a little boring in places. But the overall mystery answers and advancements were great. It was a good book in a great series, but it wasn’t as good as the first one, which I completely loved. Still very much worth a read if you enjoy paranormal books and are interested in the Lost Colony of Roanoke.

*Disclaimer- I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for my thoughts.

The Curse Breakers, Denise Grover Swank.

Review from Jeannie Zelos Book Reviews
well, I’ve read and enjoyed the first in this trilogy so on to book two..
The trilogy is based around the mysterious Lost Colony of Roanoke, the Virginia settlement that vanished without a trace around 1590. Denise has taken the legend and compiled this gripping tale from it. In her version it disappeared as a result of a curse, and the two families involved have a gate keeper in each generation, and must keep the artefacts needed for the future, and the story a secret. Ellie was brought up as a gatekeeper being the only child of her gatekeeper father but after a family tragedy in which her mum died when she was eight, she's given up on the whole story, nothing has happened in the past 400 years and she thinks its just one of those long held, but untrue tales. Then she meets Collin....and everything changes, literally with a bang.
So, that was book one, and it ended with a huge shock, when Collin didn't do as he'd said, but instead betrayed her and let the gate open as he's done a deal with Okeus. Ellie is distraught, spirits are coming out quickly, though they are still very weak, and her dad sacrifices himself to shut the gate. The spirits that have escaped however are after her. They want revenge though Okeus still protects, her having given her the option of joining him. He's pressing for a decision, Ahone, the one she thought would help, is absent but sends various spirits with vague and mysterious messages, and Ellie is in danger still. The spirits are getting stronger, devouring animals and will move on to humans. There's a vengeful badger spirit who's particularly keen to kill her and devour her Manitou, and he's not really worried about Okeus proclamation. She won't ask Collin for help, can't trust him and is so upset about his betrayal, and yet..she still feels an incredible connection to him, is tied to him forever via their souls and struggling all round. If that's not enough to keep her busy, she also being tracked by a crime gang who think she has information about something they need.
She meets David in this book, he's a British Doctor in the field of legends and mythology and she wants his help. Of course he thinks its all stories til she tells him to stay a night at her apartment, and wait for the nightly message from Okeus...She starts a relationship with David, but her feelings for Collin are still strong. I'm in two minds here, David is a good guy, solid, won't let her down and yet Collin...I just feel he's her destiny. I'm hoping book three sheds some light in his behaviours and comes up with acceptable reasons, then someone for David too- I like everyone to end happily :-)
Once again there was lots of action in the story, interesting additions to legends, some sensual and sexy interludes :-) and more mysteries coming out even as some get solved. The plots and dangers increase in this part, and there's another riveting conclusion, so book three will be a thrilling finale. It's priced at £3.99 for a massive 407 pages. Hurrah!

Even before I had finished The Curse Keepers I rushed to Amazon and one-clicked The Curse Breakers. I knew there was no way I could finish book one and not start on the sequel immediately. My nerves were a complete mess after the cliffhanger in book one and I devoured this book in less than a day.

I am mad at Ellie. M.A.D. I went into this book loving her. I understood the choices she made in book one. I even, just a little bit, understood the ending. But Ellie does something horrible in this book. I feel like she betrayed me the readers with her actions and then her continue to pursue this “new development”. I don’t see how things can ever be fixed or feel as good as they did in book one. There will always be rift not only between Ellie and myself but Ellie and Collin.

There is not enough Collin in this book by a long shot. We get snippets of him here and there but it just didn’t fulfill my need for him. He’s angry, yes. He’s hurt, yes. I would be too, but under all of that he has kept his promise to keep Ellie safe. He’s doing it the best way he can. Is Collin still a bit of a jerk? Majorly. Does he still have more secrets than the US government? Oh yes, I’m not sure how they’ll all fit into book 3. The thing is, I don’t care, I love him! There I admitted it, I love him.

You know who I don’t love? David. He needs to go take a flying leap off a tall building. David is ruining everything! Do you see what I mean when I said I was involved in these books? Maybe a little too much. I need to lay off the wine and wind it down a notch… or not. I know that David has a deeper role in this story but I don’t care, I just need him to leave. I hope he’s gone within the first three chapters of book three. Let me tell you right now if I have to read crap about David for the entire next book only to have the “resolution” come at like 98% I am going to be pissed. I want to see my two favorite people together, and David is NOT one of my favorite people.

The CLIFFHANGER ending in The Curse Breakers is even worse than in book one. I didn’t think it would be possible, but it was. I have a riot of emotions whenever I think of this book. I’m so mad at Ellie, I’m so sad for Collin, I so hate David. Hell, right now Okeus might be my favorite character. At least I know where we stand with him.

I wanted the author to make everything better. To pick up the heart she tore out of my chest at the end of book one, fix it and put it back in my chest cavity. Of course I should know better, this is not what happened. During book two my already broken heart was just stomped on and kicked around a little while Denise Grover Swank did a little hat dance around it, then she left it flailing on the ground until September when book three, The Curse Defiers is released. This is why I try my hardest to not read series until they are completed. How will I ever make it until then? I need to know Collin’s secrets, right now!
