Beautiful Guide! 22 avril 2010
Par Romaine - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché Commentaire client Vine pour produit gratuit ( De quoi s'agit-il? )
I typically purchase Frommer's travel guides when I travel, so I was curious how the Lonely Planet, Discover Ireland would match up. There are beautiful pictures throughout the book, unlike many travel guides out there that just have a few pages of photos at the beginning.

Like most travel guides, the typical planning tips are included as well as an Ireland's Best section. The book begins with Ireland's top 25 experiences. This is a great section to look at when planning your trip. It gives a brief summary of the top experience and references the page to find further information. The next section gives some sample itineraries depending on the length of your stay. I always find this helpful to see what to target when I have limited time.

The remainder of the book is divided into the various regions of Ireland. Each section has a well detailed map, highlights of the region and the region's best. Each section is well written and full of excellent information regarding sights, hotels and dining. My one complaint is that there is no star rating for hotels or restaurants. They have a "pick", but all other suggestions are listed in no particular order. I feel that the star rating helps to prioritize the restaurants or hotels I would like to visit. If there would have been a star rating I would have given this review a 5 star.

All in all this is a wonderful travel guide; complete and full of beautiful pictures. I highly recommend it to anyone planning on visiting Ireland in the future.

Beautiful, Helpful, Insightful 25 mai 2010

Having recently visited Ireland, I can honestly say that this book is spot on.

This is no mere "spots you should see" book. This Lonely Planet guide is filled with maps, pictures, and other information you'd expect, but it also contains addresses, phone numbers, festival dates, and more. One of the best features is tips from locals on what you should see when you visit their town or county.

The guide even includes tips on how to behave in an Irish Pub. While it does cover the "rounds" system, they've forgotten one very important tip I learned from local bartenders: don't order an Irish Coffee. The locals never do and it's a pain for the bartenders to make. Keep your bartender happy: order a Bailey's and Coffee instead! (Order your Irish Coffee when you visit San Francisco.)

The photos are beautiful and give you a tantalizing glimpse of what awaits you on the Emerald Isle.

The maps are incredibly helpful, as is the middle section of the book. The middle section is a rundown of the different counties in Ireland. It's particularly helpful because it's laid out how the locals think. (When in Cork City, don't talk about Dublin. It's true and it's in the book!)

As a recent visitor, this book serves me as a wonderful reminder of pleasant vacation. But if you're planning on visiting, this book should be read beforehand and taken with you! Sláinte!

Wonderful Tour book 24 mai 2010

This is a really beautiful and useful tour book of Ireland from Lonely Planet.

It breaks up the country into 7 color coded sections, Northern Ireland, Northwest Ireland, Galway and the West, Eastern Ireland, Dublin, Southwest Ireland & Kilkenny and the Southeast. The outer edges of the pages are colored so you can easily find each section you are looking for.

In the sections are a wealth of information. Each one starts with a detailed map, then there is a highlight section with includes suggestions from local experts. Highlights include: Best beauty spots, festivals, historic spots, local activities, vital statistics, advance planning, resources and getting around. There's even an 'area in a nutshell section'. Then the listing are broken down by town. Giving suggestions for where to eat, stay and visit.

It's a beautiful book, with many color photographs and a wealth of information - everything you'll need for a trip to Ireland.

So Good You'll Poop Shamrocks! 13 juillet 2010

Okay so I realize the title of the review is a little much but as an Irish-American I figured I am allowed to have fun with a review of a guide written about my homeland. Right? If not and the title offended you, remember that I am also Irish-American and probably too busy drinking to care. Anywho...

This really is an excellent guide to the Emerald Isle. The book itself is 8 by 5 and a little under and inch thick so it fill fit nicely in the outer pocket of a backpack or in a medium sized purse. It is full color with glossy pages and while a paperback it feels well made so that it won't begin falling apart halfway through your trip.

As far as information goes this guide really seems to have all the info you could want. The sort of things you get are: A brief history of the country, a list of the top 25 things to see and do, 3 different suggested itineraries depending on how long you have in the country, and individualized sections on Dublin, the Eastern Island, Kilkenny Area, Galway Area, Southwest, Northwest, and Northern Ireland. Each section covers things like where to eat, sleep, drink, see, tours, festivals and sights, and how to travel in that particular area.

Towards the back of the book you get a great section on Irish culture and a help with understanding the people, customs and local traits. And also I forgot to mention the book really does a good job of finding and recommending things the locals like so you are not just going to the touristy spots all the time.

Suffice to say I think the book covers just about anything you would want to know about the beautiful green island. The pages are color coded making quick navigation through the book a breeze and the book was published in March 2010 so it is about a recent and updated guide you can find. As I said before highly recommended, if you have a particular question feel free to leave a comment to this review and I will try to answer it for you.

This book entices and is a good start to a planner. 26 avril 2010

I am a good test case for this book. I have been immune to the purported charms of Ireland, despite Irish ancestory, despite pictures and stories from family who have gone, despite travel to other parts of Europe.

My reason has been that Ireland has seemed boring to me. (Unfair, maybe even callow, but that has been my feeling.)

So, when I got this book, I wanted to know if the Discover Ireland guide book could do more than relate facts, could it entice? I am happy to report that this is an excellent guide. My wife says that it is a bit light and buzzy, but I think that this book touches on a wide variety of places to go, experiences to have. The pictures are excellent, and the prose is sharp.

I was able to find good archaeological ruins that I suddenly feel I need to see, food I want to taste, and a sense of what a trip would be like. in this modern era, we all use the interent for fine tuning trip plans, but this book is an excellent start, and it left me wanting more... a trip!
