Critique

The Don Killuminati : The 7 Day Theory.

& - Copyright 2015 Music Story

HASH(0x9b5c4438) étoiles sur 5 UNDERRATED CLASSIC 21 mars 2005

This is no doubt one of Snoop's best albums, probably my favorite. I can listen to it all the way through. The bulk of the album is produced by DJ Pooh and he mixed the entire thing is well. He comes with some classic material, "Up Jump Tha Boogie" which gives you that Roger Troutman style bounce and talkbox melodies. Add on a great appearance by Kurupt and it's a wrap. Another one that really comes to mind is "Doggyland" which would most likely be on my 'Top 10' Snoop Dogg list. Something about this beat and the way Snoop rhymes, makes you sad and happy at the same time. Very clean, the mastering on this entire record was well done. There is also a classic Biz Markie remake, "Vapors", where Snoop rhymes about his crew individually going from rags to riches, nothing great but it's a good laid back song. DJ Pooh also produced "2001", "Snoop's Upside Ya Head", and "Snoop Bounce". With additional cuts from Daz, Soopafly, LT Hutton, Sam Sneed, Arkim & Flair. If a Snoop fan, this is for sure a MUST HAVE, and for any West Coast fan. If you love the West and don't like this, check your opinion, you're hating on a great one. What a legendary album.

Expectations from fans and the general public can be a deadly thing to a rappers career. With his second release, a lot of people expected the second coming of Doggstyle. But that was an unfair expectation -- I mean, with Dr. Dre (the producer of his classic debut) being gone from Death Row and all. The production is done by committee on this album by DJ Pooh (pictured in the album credits), Soopafly, and Daz. Arkim & Flair, L.T., Sam Sneed, and Snoop himself all contribute a track. So, naturally, the sound on this album is different from his debut. It's not an easy job to fill the good doctor's shoes, but I'd have to say that Pooh, Soopafly, and Daz do an admirable job handling this album. The sound still reeks of Cali funk while Snoop rhymed on beat (something he almost never does nowadays).

With that being said, there is very little skip material on this joint. "Snoop Bounce" and "(Tear 'em Off) Me & My Doggz" suffer from drowsy production. The skits could've been left off too. Some were good, some were corny. Aside from those hiccups, the album is pretty good.

Tha Doggfather is good follow up to Doggystyle. It doesn't have many weak spots and the production bangs nonstop. For those of you that just got into Snoop within the last two or three years, you should grab this if you want to know what Snoop sounded like when he was still putting some effort into his releases. This is probably Snoop's second best album. Anyone that tells you this album is disappointing is sorely mistaken. I recommend adding this album to your collection.

Standout Tracks: Sixx Minutes feat. Raphael Saddiq, Doggfather feat. Charlie Wilson, Vapors feat. Charlie Wilson & Teena Marie, You Thought feat. Too Short & Soopafly, Freestyle Conversation, Downtown Assassins feat. Daz & Tray Dee, Snoop's Upside Ya Head, Up Jump The Boogie feat. Charlie Wilson & Teena Marie, and Groupie feat. Tha Dogg Pound, Nate Dogg, Warren G., & Charlie Wilson (My Favorite)

I just don't get it. Ok, the beats were beter on "Doggystyle" but its not fair to compare anyone's beats to Dr Dre's. Besides DJ Pooh (who produced most the album) did a very good job. The one thing I didn't like about Snoops 1st one was that none of the songs had any personal meanings. On this album he gets more personal at the times while remaining hardcore. Also think about what he had just gone through. His friend 2Pac was killed (who he dedicated the album to) and his other friend and mentoor DrDre just left the label, he had just got off a trail where he almost went to jail, and he was in the middle of the crashing Deathrow empire. But he still put together a great album.
The album starts with the title track witch is a great song. This one was produced bt Daz and its very good. "Up Jump tha Boogie" and "Snoop Bounce" show what Snoop can do with a swanky beat. The next song "Freestyle Conversation" has my favorite Snoop flow ever. Hes just rapping real fast about randome stuff and is undicribable. One of my favorite rap songs. "Gold Rush" is a great song with Kurupt on it who always makes the best songs with Snoop Dogg. It has a western film fell to it. "Me and My Doggz" is another one of the swanky songs on this album. "You Thought" is another good song with some smart and funny lyrics. Strong beat too. "Vapors" is a song about Snoop and all his friends making it out of the ghetto. This is what i mean by the album is more personal. Actualy Snoop said he wanted to make a positive album but the Deathrow wouldn't let him cuz they thought it would ruin their image. "2001" is great song and is one of the standout tracks. I don't realy like it when artists don't their songs and Snoop didn't write this song and one or two more but he wrote or co-wrote the rest so he never abandones the art of writing. I love "Sixx Minutes". Its always been one of my favorite songs on the album. its very calm and quiete. Its kinnda about how everyone tried to steal his style after his 1st album. "Wake Up" is another good one and has Tray Dee who is now in Tha Eastsidaz now. "Snoops Upside Ya Head" is another great song with an exeptionaly catchy chorus. "Doggyland" is another good one with a unique sound. The final track is Snoop and 2Pac playing live and its sortta haunting the way it ends. you'll see if you get it.
Overall I can't say this is Snoops best album but its the only one that I can listen to all the way through without haveing to skip a single track. Overall its well worth having. If you want to get all of Snoops albums this is actualy a real good starting point. Anyways i don't get why everyone hates this album but its actualy acceptionaly well done and should of been another clasic. Now that it's been re-released you can get it much cheaper than before.

HASH(0x9b8306c0) étoiles sur 5 Classic!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 6 août 2006
Par John Frederick - Publié sur Amazon.com

Now i'm aware that this can't touch his debut. However sayiing that doesn't mean its bad, meaning that this is fantastic but his debut is way more fnatastic. But this has to be his second best album seeing when he made this he was still a gangsta. He left his gansgta roots after he left deathrow so none of his no limit albums can touch this stuff. Dr Dre had left Deathrow before this was being made so there aren't any of his fantastic beats. However I would say that the producers who produced this album did a job that is arguably just as good.
My ratings Are The Following.
1. Intro 9/10 Its pretty good for an intro
2. Doggfather 10/10 Classic, A great track to kick the album off with. The beats are tight and Snoop does all verses and there is a great chorus by Charlie Wilson
3. Ride 4 Me 0/10 A stupid skit, just there to make the album longer
4. Up Jump Tha Boogie 10/10 Great chorus with more cool beats
5. Freestyle Conversation 6/10 Well its not that great, Snoop's really just talking the whole time
6. When I Grow Up 3/10 I don't mind this skit, the only skit on the album I don't absolutely hate
7. Snoop Bounce 10/10 Classic, good to BOUNCE to
8. Gold Rush 9/10 Some tight a** beats, however it only has one verse by Snoop
9. You Thought 7/10 Naaa, a bit of a stupid song with too many guest appearances
10. (Tear Em Off) Me And My Doggz 10/10 A solo with more tight a** beats. Definitely one of my favourites
11. Vapors 10/10 Classic, I can definitely see why this one became a hit. Another solo with bangin beats with Snoop talking about the lives of all the members of Tha Dogg Pound
12. Groupie 7.5/10 Again, its a bit of a filler with a bad topic nad too many guest appearances
13. 2001 10/10 Another tight solo. This should have been called Snoop Bounce II seeing he talks about making people bounce and stuff
14. Sixx Minutes 10/10 Pretty underappreciated, i've seen that some people have given this song a bad rating. However for me this is a very good song and Snoop is very laid back
15. (O.J.) Wake Up 9.5/10 Hmm, more guest appearances however half of it is Snoop and Snoop does well especially in the chorus
16. Snoop's Upside Ya Head 10/10 Classic, another favourite with all verses by Snoop and a great chorus
17. Blueberry 8/10 Its alright, however wheres Snoop. I can't give it any more than 8/10 if theres no Snoop
18. Traffic Jam 0/10 Another stupid WBALLZ skit, not in the least bit funny at all. That WBALLZ guy is an idiot
19. Doggyland 10/10 Another great track, Snoop is in all the verses and there is a great chorus
20. Downtown Assassins 9.5/10 I can't give this anymore than 9.5/10 seeing theres only one verse by Snoop. However this is definitely a tight track with bangin beats
21. Outro 5/10

HASH(0x9b928570) étoiles sur 5 Snoop's Second Best Album In My Opinion 12 septembre 2006
Par Jackson Braybrooks - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Snoop released an absolute classic in 93 which went by the name of "Doggystyle". It took him a few years to come back with a scond album for his fans but when he did it was great. Their are people who are hating on this album which is mainly because it was such a disspointment that it couldn't touch Doggystyle. Well it's actually a pretty great album when you put that aside. Besides, did Nas ever come out with another Illmatic, Did Tupac ever come out with another Me Against The World, Did 50 Cent ever come out with another Power Of The Dollar, no. Anyway there were lots of things going on for Snoop at the time he was working on this.

- He had lost his homie Tupac

- Deathrow was crashing

- He had just had his murder trial

- Dr Dre had left Deathrow

So you see. And like I said it is a great album and people should judge it as a good record and not give it a bad rating just because its not another Doggystyle.

Now about the content of this album. The lyrics are not as gangsta as Doggystyle, well there's a reason for that. Snoop grew up and went to a more business sort of attitude. So his not as misogynystic and violent in the songs. The production of this was top, people like Daz and DJ Quik are great producers and made great G Funk beats. Snoop certainly was still in his prime when he made this, I think its just such a shame that he went downhill after leaving Deathrow.

Top Five Tracks

1. Doggfather

2. Me And My Doggz

3. Snoop's Upside Ya Head

4. Doggyland

5. Up Jump Tha Boogie

Overall 4.5 stars. Get this if you are a rap fan.
