Présentation de l'éditeur

Book 12 in the New Species series. It is advisable to read the books in order to get the most enjoyment from the series.

Kat’s boss wants dirt on the NSO. She is sent to Homeland undercover but everything goes wrong as soon as she enters the front gates. She is arrested by a big, powerful, sexy New Species but she is not frightened. He turns her on and things heat up fast between them. Now, she just hopes he doesn’t break her heart.

Darkness admires Kat’s courage but he cannot trust anything she says. He hasn’t been with a female for years because he knows he is too damaged. He is not mate material, despite his desire to possess her in every way. Darkness fears losing control—the one thing that defines his life. He doesn’t think he can tear down the protective walls he’s built, even for her.

Inside Scoop: Kat never realized how much fun handcuffs and dominant males could be until she discovered her kinky side through Darkness’ need for control.

Reader Advisory: This story has graphic sexual language and scenes - no closed bedroom doors (or other rooms) here!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 In my top three favorites for the series 24 septembre 2014
Par A Book a Day - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Format Kindle|Achat vérifié
I have to say that this is one of my top three favorite New Species for a whole host of reasons, starting with loving the kick butt heroine, the pace, the intermingling of new species we know and love, bringing the overarching storyline full circle, as well as a truly damaged new species who's been more damaged than most. If you haven't been reading the series, I wouldn't recommend starting here since the storyline has its roots all the way back to book 1, Fury, through the last, True. You could skip some books in between, but those two are the most important to this particular book.

Kat is an FBI agent who's been sent undercover into Homeland under the guise of instructor from a forensic crime lab, except she blows her cover immediately by kicking some serious a$$, as this book starts with a bang... literally. She's really been sent to search and recover someone for her boss, but Kat knows something is not right about the operation and uses the opportunity as a break instead, with all intentions of returning empty handed, except now she has to tap dance her way around her impressive combat techniques. After the NSO discover she's with the FBI, they decide to play along with her pathetic story to see why she's truly at Homeland. Something along the lines of keep your friends close and your enemies closer, Darkness is determined to uncover Kat's secrets by any means possible.

The lowdown is that there is a significant amount of angst, but it felt right in this context. Darkness has been through some pretty bad stuff and I felt the story explained well enough why he is the way he is. Kat was certainly a strong enough character to handle the crap he kept dishing out and at the end of the day, he didn't quite get to three strikes, so I'm okay with the patience and forgiveness Kat specifically had to demonstrate. I especially enjoyed the dynamics between Darkness and all the other New Species, especially Fury. This story, more than most, weaved in a host of supporting, once starring, characters, and it felt nice to catch up with some of my favorites as well as some new characters. Something was brewing with Trey Roberts, and I'm wondering if this is a hint at the first new species female and human male story Laurann has talked about. All in all, a great addition that was action packed from the start and wouldn't let me put it down.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 but I love the NS story in general and I read each ... 27 septembre 2014

I get so irritated with myself for bellying up to the bar and paying yet again for a poorly written book by this author, but I love the NS story in general and I read each book hoping she has taken a writing class and the dialogue and ability to flesh out characters will improve. As the books go up in price, I am irritated that I've been sucked in again. Oh well.

The first part of this book isn't bad as it introduces a really strong woman. It goes down from there because: 1. What FBI agent would take this assignment and keep saying over and over that it would be like a vacation? Stupid plot line. 2. What strong woman would allow a man to have hate sex with her? Darkness was attracted to her but he wouldn't allow her to touch him or kiss him, he made her allow him to use her. Who would do that? I can see being sexually attracted to a dude like him, but really? As opposed to previous books, this guy has NO protective feelings for her, is not drawn to her and doesn't care about her feelings at all. Yeah, he's jealous, but that's about it. 3. She allows him to hate her the whole book, use her and then caves in the end when he becomes a totally different person AND she doesn't insist he get some help for his tragic past. Once again, a HEA all wrapped up with a bow in the end and it makes no sense. They don't even know each other and they're ready to have a family. Wow.

And again..stilted dialogue (at least 100 extraneous pages)....sigh. According to the book, at least 3 years have went by. I am weary of men being called "males" and women being called "females" and "silk pajama pants" and tank tops, muscle shirts and on and on. At least the repeated use of the word "a&&hole" is improving. After this long, there are still haters and crowds of protesters at the gates? Really? There are crazy people out there, so I can see a handful now and then. But after that many years, people should be moving on to the next news story and I would like to see the book tone change from "all humans bad" to a point where NS are slowly being accepted into society and the tone changing. Would that happen in real life? Maybe, who knows?

This book doesn't compare to Fury or any of the 1-2 good books in the series. I knew Darkness would be another tormented soul, but I felt no sympathy or compassion for him with this style of writing and I didn't like him. The scenes with Fury were "infuriating" as he keeps reaching out to Darkness and getting slapped down all for a predictable, boring story about Darkness's captivity. Again, at least 3 years have went by, they should have had a heart to heart by now.

I would give the book 2 stars, however I gave it 3 because it gives glimpses of the children and some of the characters that I have learned to enjoy make appearances. That's what made the book tolerable. I think the human women (ugh....mates) would want to get to know each other and be a tight group as they have so much in common and they have been removed from their own world and basically forced to live in isolation away from everything and everyone they love. So, I'd like to see more of the previous book characters appear more and more in each subsequent book.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 another hit in a series that just keeps getting better 30 septembre 2014
Par B.E. Love - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Format Kindle|Achat vérifié
Ok let me start by saying I love this series, it is one of if not my favorite PR romance series that I weigh other shifter/DNA books by and most sadly fall flat as a pancake so when I stalk Laurann Dohner I get excepted like it's Christmas when I see a new New Species book coming out. I couldn't wait for this book then I read the teasers and I was even more excited and I got this book the second I could.

Coming to the NSO was nothing Kat planned or wanted but her boss at the FBI ordered it, so she made her own plan to have fun and play dumb when she returned to work while hiding any information she found. Entering the NSO Kat stops a deadly threat and that puts her on Darkness's radar. Darkness doesn't trust humans but especially woman and he is who is called on when information is needed from a tough case. Seeing Kat Darkness knows she isn't what she seems so he sets about to find the truth.

The more time they spend together the more they can't deny the attraction and convince themselves that a purely physical relationship is a good idea. As they get to know each other the more it becomes hard to deny their feelings. But Darkness still can't let go of his past and his feelings for humans. When both Darkness and Kat think it is the end a threat is revealed that could cost someone their life and the feelings they have and tried so hard to deny won't be hidden any longer.

I have to say I was a little worried about this book when I got a little ways into it. I try my best not to read reviews of books I really want to read and if the author is someone I know I can trust because others opinions (too many of them) can ruin my experience of a book and theres always the chance something important will be spoiled. But every once in a while my eyes (of their own free will) wonder and that is what happened with Darkness. Some had issues with this book and after reading a little while I started to get scared myself that what I read was true.

Darkness was a jerk and the heroine Kat started to get a little too pushy for me. And my heart started to break in tiny little pieces thinking that I would have a Laurann Dohner book that I didn't like. But I kept read and I loved this book, I fell in love with Darkness and all his brooding ways and Kat softened some but was strong when she needed to be. Now I do wish that Darkness had begged more (because lets face it whats not to love with that) and I do wish he had groveled more even though he did. But I loved this book Darkness was different from the other NS but it wasn't bad. Kat was it for him he just had a lot to over come.

We get great glimpses into other NS characters that has convinced me even more that Laurann Dohner will never be able to end this series. We get info (yeah not really info. more like a tease) of Trey, and a whole slew of other NS Males that I anticipate more and more for their stories. I can't wait for Smileys book, and that we get it in a few days is almost more than I can take. I hope book 14 isn't too far away in the future. This is one of those series that I find myself wanting to re-read all the time and I have to remind myself that I have too many books waiting in the wings as it is, but I think a re-read will be something I can't hold off much longer.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 ... Species series has to be one of my all-time favorite story lines 25 septembre 2014

The New Species series has to be one of my all-time favorite story lines. I have a tradition that just prior to the release of a new - New Species, book I will down load and read the entire prior stories to re-embrace the New Species family. I love all the main characters, but I am partial to a few store lines over others but none ever disappoint. These are well written books with interesting character development and story lines and they always provide a happy ending. The intimate scenes are hot and well described without being overwhelming.

Darkness is the most recent; in fact I had it pre-ordered and was happily anticipating its arrival. Ms. Dohner hit it out of the park once again. It’s amazing that even after 12 story lines the evolving lives at Homeland and Reservation continue to be intriguing, entertaining and well developed. There is always depth in the writing providing an understanding for the backgrounds for both H/h as well as the parallel characters within the story and this was definitely the case with Darkness. These peaks into the past for the New Species gives me even more of an appreciation for what the New Species have overcome to find happiness. I love that we get glimpses of many of the past couples and many of my favorite secondary characters. I can’t wait for the next story – Smiley. He has waited long enough for his chance at love. I have a feeling that Trey and Breeze are due soon as well (hint-hint) and I would love for Ven to find a family.

I have read just about everything that Ms. Dohner has written and I’m never disappointed but I must confess that this series is by far my favorite. I hope these stories continue to develop for I would be saddened not to be given new history on the development of the New Species community. Thank you, thank you!!!!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 5 stars = I freaking LOVED this book!!! More Please!!! 23 septembre 2014

Mrs. Dohner has done it again! Darkness actually reminds me a lot of the beginning of the series, when there was tons of action and intrigue. While I have thoroughly enjoyed the last few installments that focused more on the internal workings of the NSO (New Species Organization) and/or the relationship of the titled character, this was a nice return to the roots sort of book. Of course, the SECRET was freaking awesome. I don’t remember the last time I wrote a review that I had to work so hard to keep from writing a spoiler. I want to shout it from the rooftops. LOL! At least I’ll only have to wait until the weekend before my New Species reading buddy gets to read the book and we can gossip about it.

With this being the 12th book in the series, I admittedly get a tad confused as to when we met whom despite having read the majority of the series multiple times. Darkness has such a formidable character that I was looking forward to reading his story. As we know, all of the New Species have terrible backgrounds and more baggage than any one being should carry, but Darkness seems to have more than his fair share. While there have been hints in previous books, when his entire story was revealed it was heartbreaking. Mercile is its own brand of evil, but what he was exposed to was far worse – if you can even imagine that. The things that Darkness has done and witnessed make him even more resistant to the idea of finding a mate than the typical New Species male. So it wasn’t surprising that Kat would have to be a strong female to break through … no shrinking violet allowed. Kat’s character actually reminded me a lot of Trisha with her wise cracks and sarcasm. I loved her character and enjoyed getting to know her and watching her relationship with Darkness develop. They were definitely well-matched.

Darkness was a much anticipated release for me and Mrs. Dohner did not disappoint. There is tons of explosive action – both in and out of the bedroom. We have our common struggle as the male New Species struggles with accepting the love of the human woman, yet even after twelve books the author manages to make each story individualized and I’ve never felt like she’s merely recycling a storyline – which is a common complaint about such long series. While I may compare Kat to Trisha or say the book is reminiscent of the series’ early days, it has to do with the emotions the book invokes in me. And because I just can’t help myself, I have to say that I found it rather entertaining that there seems to be a shared familial desire among certain males to tie their female up during sex … LOL! <= Spoiler, kind of but not really. When you read the book, you’ll understand what I mean. If you’re a huge fan of the series, you may figure it out if you really think about it. But otherwise, it won’t mean anything to you. Thank you Ms. Dohner for another great visit to Homeland. I have Smiley on pre-order and am counting the days.
