Présentation de l'éditeur

a Ghost Story

“A frightening tale of lost souls, lost love, murder and deceit.”
---The Sierra Vista Herald

After photographer Chelsea McCord’s marriage falls apart, her great uncle Bob talks her into starting a new life in 1980s Bisbee, Arizona, the historic mining town with a notorious past. Bob's father, mining magnate Lucas McCord, helped build Bisbee in the early 20th century.

Chelsea discovers an old box camera in a dusty trunk, the film still inside. Sfjhe uses it to photograph the town. Is it her imagination, or does the stench of death emanate from the camera’s inner workings?

And when Chelsea looks through a viewfinder wavy with age, she sees children in gunny sack clothes, their eyes dark and grainy. Children from the 1920’s. She sees a young man and woman at a train station that no longer exists. The same young woman appears in each of the camera's photographs.

As the past superimposes itself on the present, Chelsea learns the secret of her powerful family’s dark legacy. With one click of the shutter, she has unleashed a pure and hungry evil that will consume everyone she loves.

Pitted against a supernatural force and stalked by a psychopathic killer, Chelsea rediscovers her capacity to love as she fights to save her beloved uncle–and herself.

“Skillfully blending elements of mystery, horror and a nice touch of irony, DARKSCOPE weaves a fascinating spell. 4 ½ stars."
---Frank A. Loporto, Rave Reviews

“Buy the book and send it to people you want to visit here. If they aren’t scared away by the plot, they’ll soon come in.”
---Bisbee Gazette

5.0 étoiles sur 5 More than a ghost story. . . 2 décembre 2010

This was the first book I read by Margaret Falk, a.k.a J. Carson Black, that resulted in my following her career through many more wonderful novels. DARKSCOPE, a chilling story about lost love and old debts collected,is a ghost story about an old box camera that takes pictures of the past. Main character Chelsea, granddaughter to a turn of the century mining magnate, comes across a possessed box camera and soon finds herself caught up in the mystery of the images locked inside the camera. Black brings the rustic old town of Bisbee, Arizona to life--along with a beautiful ghost named Kathy who begs for revenge and retribution. J. Carson Black is a master at suspense. Don't miss this one or any of the others.

After reading J Carson Black's Laura Cardinal series I was not really sure what to expect since this book isn't part of that series. The book was like all J Carson Blacks books & one of her greatest strengths IMHO - she makes you feel like you are there & part of the story. She does such a wonderful job of describing everything without sounding fake or looking like she just added things to make the story longer.

In this book there are several stories taking place (2 major and 1 very minor). It is not hard to follow them except I would advise you to read this book over the course of a couple of days and not go on vacation w/o finishing it like I did. I had to think about who a couple of minor characters were when introduced again. All the characters were interesting and it was a hard book to put down because you want to know what happens.

There was no swearing and no sex for those of you who don't like that in your books. The book was not too long or too short and everything is wrapped up at the end of the book. Nothing was left hanging and you felt like you had the answers to everything.

All in all it was another great story and I can't wait to read her next book!

This is the first book that I have read by this author and the first book that I felt the need to follow up on with a review. As a huge fan of supernatural and ghost story fiction I have gotten used to predictable storylines and regenerated plots. This book delivered neither. It was refreshing and original and there were times when every hair on my head stood up and my skin crawled. The book had a perfect ending that left my skin crawling again and made me want more. What a great read!

Although I've downloaded several of this author's books, this is the first I've read. I was hooked during the first chapter - one of the best first chapters I've read in awhile. The book became a bit confusing to me as it switched from present to past, but I finally figured out the construct and felt the book flowed freely to the end. The writing reminds me a bit of one of my other favorite modern thriller authors (Scott Nicholson), because of her absolutely beautiful use of metaphor and ability to create powerful images in the mind of the reader:

"The sound that was no sound poured out of the radio. The sound of Amelia Earhart lost over the ocean, the sound of nuclear winter, the sound of the lost. It stayed with her, battering her consciousness, almost unbearable, the colorless landscape of dread silence."

It's the kind of writing you just want to read over and over. Beautifully-crafted "ghost" story/thriller.

I enjoyed reading this book. Sometimes I was drawn into the world of Bisbee. Other times I was left with a feeling of wanting more to the story. Keep up the good work. I'll be reading more of your books in the future.
