Présentation de l'éditeur

In the summer of 2068, New Yorker Martin Jacob had a sweet life ahead of him. He had recently graduated from NYU. He spent most of his time with his artist girlfriend, who had a wonderful apartment in Harlem. And in September, he was to begin his career as a History teacher for a private school in Connecticut. An easy life was laid out before him. Then a man-made virus came along, and it turned his world upside down.

Martin wakes to find a disheveled President addressing the nation. His girlfriend is driven mad with grief, right before his very eyes. His parents call to inform him that they are going to die. And he steps outside to find Martial Law on the streets.

"The Days and Months We Were First Born- The Unraveling" is book one of Martin's epic tale of survival. At times funny, at times heartbreaking, and at times action packed, this book will take the reader on an unforgettable journey.

I'm sure some fans will be after me for not giving a free book a five-star rating. Keep in mind, it's only been free for a bit; I actually purchased all three books in the series and while I'm midway through book 3, I'll try to keep my comments focused on the first - uh - section.

That's what it is, folks: This is a regular-sized novel split into three parts and sold separately. Not an issue when it's free; more so when each section is $3 or more.

The post-apocalyptic plot is of the pandemic type, but I give kudos to the author for a unique take on the genre. In this case, it's 2068 in an America considerably evolved from today's (except that e-readers remain stuck in 2011 technology for some reason). A strange and incurable cancer sweeps 90% of the population out the door in a month, and Martin is one of the very few who survive. Martin's survival is dual, as he also is one of the very, very few who survive New York City.

Martin's tale is fast-paced and throws a lifetime of experiences at him as the world disintegrates. If you like PA fiction, you'll like this novela.

The "book" is actually divided into a so-called trilogy that is what most authors would call a complete novel divided into three parts. At the time of this writing, parts 2 and 3 are not available at the Kindle Store but likely will be restored soon.

So good plot, reasonable character(s) and (at the moment) zero cost to own equals a five-star rating, right? Not so fast. Here are my honest criticisms:

--There is some significant setup of a complex series of subplots in book one; most of them are abandoned in book two, which feels more like an interlude than a true book.

--The author desperately needs someone to proofread his copy. For the love of God, you don't PEAK inside a car; you PEEK inside. This homonym error occurs even more frequently in the second book. Yeesh.

--The author also has a distracting way of using italics for some (but not all) proper nouns and titles. It's jarring, because italics are generally reserved for emphasis, and sometimes to denote thinking/internal thoughts. At least in the few thousand print books I've read in my lifetime.

--I do not like it when an author takes me out of the story with poor use of the language. I do not like it when an author can't seem to determine how to provide the context, backstory or history of the future time they're writing about. I do not like it when the main hero seems to be relegated to second fiddle for almost a third of a trilogy just so a whole bunch of other characters can be introduced, complete with their entire stories. I do not like green eggs and ham. And I do not like it when an author creates a long list of narrative elements, each beginning with the EXACT SAME PHRASE repeated ad nauseam...and the author uses that tiring device multiple times throughout the books.

With some significant proofreading and reconstruction of some elements, this could be a compelling series. My biggest worry as I get into book three is that the plot is bifurcating without purpose, but we'll see.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great read, couldn't put it down (except to sleep) 3 juin 2011

I was attracted by the title, I this kind of books where everything is going to hell. The reading was intense through the book and thus I couldn't put it down. I usually read it before going to bed, but every night I stayed up late to read some more, just a bit more...spent about an hour every night reading it until I finished it. It kept me interested and for sure I am reading the second book, I already started it :D

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Tell me less... 8 août 2011

Like the rest of this book, the title itself could use some cutting... I enjoy post-apocalyptic books, and eagerly downloaded this for free with every intention of buying the next two when I finished this one. I won't be buying the next two.

Credit due: the author has a good concept with the bones of a compelling story. I kept reading because I wanted to find out what happens to Martin, our main man on a journey of survival.

But my mood grew more irritated the longer I read. Mr. Hunter and his writing could benefit from some time with a critique group. His unrelenting use of "was" or "were" instead of any other more active and appealing verbs became a burden. I found his misuse of italics, parentheses, and double punctuation nearly as annoying. Long, ponderous paragraphs described the way a neighborhood used to be, then more described the same place after the disaster. Page after page of eye-glazing backstory kept me skimming. What I suppose he thought was world-building actually came across as blatant social commentary and lecturing.

Partway through the book, Mr. Hunter resorts to "transcripts" from video logs and news reports to tell the part of the story that Martin is not witness to. These come across as stilted and contrived. Perhaps the author needs to re-think which story he is trying to tell. And then he needs to learn how to "show" his reader the story, instead of just relating it the way the relatives bore you with monochromatic narrative about their trip to Hoboken.

I've read worse writing on my Kindle, but eventually, I had to extricate myself. I gave up caring what happened to Martin, because finding out had become too tiresome.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A journey of thrills awaiting to be experienced 4 juin 2011
Par Amazon Customer - Publié sur Amazon.com

This book opens with excitement on the first page and continues to the very end. It is a futuristic story about a virus getting out of control and causing panic around the globe. The characters are caught in the dilemma of survival of the fittest, and they have to sacrifice their morals to exist in a violent society. The scenery is set in New York City with Manhattan flavor.
This book is filled with fast action, emotional impact and survival antics. It has the edge of technology that may become a reality for our children in the future. It opens the mind to think of strategic tips just in case of emergencies, you never know.
..."as if I were weightless: and cracked the very pavement... The surrounding building shook to their cores...with violent force". This story continues with further graphic details as you turn each page. Don't wait, check out this thrilling book. It is one of many coming closer to actual future predictions, not so unrealistic. This author has the gift and flair of unique genuine creativity; it's as if he's witnessing the future himself.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent Writing! Too Short! 8 août 2011

This book is set in the future... a future not too different from now. Just some different gadgets.

Martin and his girlfriend, Julie... are getting ready for breakfast. They live in NY and enjoy the parks and all the restaurants and activities there.
A world-wide epidemic is announced on the TV and Martin flips it off because he thinks it just about another variety of flu. Just another flu scare.

Except for a few people who are immune to the epidemic, everyone exposed will be dead of a form of lung cancer within days to months. There is no cure. Julie gets a call from her parents and Martin gets a call from his parents.

An extremely well-written book, this story addresses many different issues as the story keeps moving right along. Smoking, relationships, gangs, doomsday weapons, humanity.

If books two and three continue the story and the quality remains the same... they will be well worth reading.

This is literature! Not a simple easy read... but a great read! In a slightly futuristic setting. I can't wait to see where the story will take me!
I highly recommend this read. It's not cozy... not a quick read... and is very short... but I can't stress enough how excellent the writing is. The author has crafted this story well.
