Présentation de l'éditeur

A phone call. A common enough event, sometimes welcome, sometimes annoying, but seldom life changing. Or so we assume. But assumptions are dangerous things, and the reality is we all live one phone call away from disaster. One cheerful ring away from news of a tragic accident. One muted buzz from learning a lifetime of memories have disappeared in a raging house fire.

And so it is for Tom Dugan, rolling though the London night, the woman he loves in the taxi beside him. Life is good by any measure -- until his phone rings, alerting him to the arrival of two old Russian friends with a very big problem.

Dugan's attempts to help his friends rescue an innocent girl from the Russian mob plunge him into a world he'd scarcely imagined, endangering him and everyone he holds dear. A world of modern day slavery and unspeakable cruelty, from which no one will escape, unless Dugan can weather a Deadly Crossing.

Deadly Crossing is McDermott's third book in the Dugan series. For readers of his earlier books this is a slight departure from his earlier works as the action centres largely on the UK and eastern Europe with the maritime aspects much reduced. This work is a refreshing departure from his earlier Somali piracy work which has perhaps been an overused scenario by many techno-thriller writers and also of the Muslim, Middle East terrorist genre.

A short prologue sets the scene in Prague before moving to London with our hero, Tom Duggan, Managing Director of Phoenix Shipping and his girlfriend Anna Walsh of MI5. Our ex-Spetznaz Borgdanov and Ilya Denosovitch soon interrupt a romantic dinner with Dugan and Walsh with the story of Ilya's niece going missing from home. Very quickly the action builds and moves to the Kairouz residence, home of Alex Kairouz and his wife Gillian. Alex is the owner Chairman of the Board of Phoenix Shipping.

Tension builds are McDermott takes us into the seamy side of the Russian mafia, the Bratstvo, and corruption between the authorities and the criminals and its involvement in international narcotics, people trafficking, and control through terror.

McDermott has explored his subject in great depth and has written a convincing if at times terrifying tale; it is not for the squeamish. It draws to logical conclusion but the reader should avoid jumping to conclusions. There are one or two loose ends that might have potential in a later novel.

I was a little worried about the possibly slow beginning, especially for someone that has not read the earlier Dugan stories, Deadly Straits and Deadly Coast but do persevere if you enjoy a taut, well-written, thriller.

I eagerly awaited the arrival of this novel. I had read Bob's first two books, enjoying both immensely. While the story is quite different from preceding books, I found Deadly Crossing a refreshing change. I highly recommend this latest offering. I highly suggest reading Bob,s other books first as the reader wii be introduced to the main characters.

Lots of action but read McDermott's other books first to understand the characters and what might be motivating them to take the actions they take in the book.

I have been fortunate to have read everything written by this author. I remember, while reading this book, that my first thought was "Again, the author has shown that he can write with the best of them".

We have the same cast of characters in this book as in the previous ones so it would be a bit helpful for the reader to read them in order but not absolutely necessary. There is a departure from the marine theme of the previous books. That was a risk due to the author's background in the maritime industry. A risk that paid off. I believe this story is a logical extension of the previous books.

R.E. McDermott is a genuine top tier author that has crafted a good cast of characters for his stories. I am enthusiastically waiting for his next installment. I highly recommend his books to anyone especially thriller fans.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Another great offering from the desk of R. E. McDermott 16 mars 2014

Having read and reviewed the first two R. E. McDermott books, "Deadly Straits" and "Deadly Coast", I was honored to be offered an advanced copy of "Deadly Crossing" to read by the author. The story involves Tom Dugan and his girlfriend, Anna Walsh, and Tom's partner, Alex Kairouz, and his wife, Gillian. The plot departs from the seas of the world to stay more locally in Britain, where a visit from the Russian friends, Borgdanov and Denosovitch, thrust the four into the world of the Russian mafia. I won't provide any more to avoid spoiling the read for someone who has not read a book by R. E. McDermott. But there is action, suspense, and sadness mingled in with corruption and criminal activity. Another great read from R. E. McDermott that caused me to lose a little sleep to see how it turned out. I would highly recommend this book, and await the next offering from R. E. McDermott.
