j'ai adoré, ce livre tient en haleine du début à la fin. Le seul bémol est qu'il y a un peu trop de personnages.

I have to admit that I'm not always 100 % sold on every book that I've downloaded for "free" on my kindle, but I seriously could hardly put this one down. The characters were really interesting and the suspense kept increasing as I progressed into the book. I noticed some reviewers stopped after few chapters and then rated it poorly. I can guarantee that if you continue on, you will not only finish the book, but maybe even have to stay up late one night to do so! I am looking forward to more books by this author...well done!

Be prepared for a page-turning experience when you read this book! Roger Stelljes packs an extraordinary amount of twists, turns and intrigue into just four days as he takes you with Detective Mac McRyan and his cohorts through St. Paul and the surrounding area as they are pitted against seemingly brilliant adversaries. Stelljes' detailed style of writing brings you inside his characters where you'll feel their excitement and their frustrations as you travel with them throughout the Eastern metro and Western Wisconsin areas that are easily visualized through the author's vivid descriptions.

Sorry, I only made it to 20% in Deadly Stillwater - Thriller (McRyan Mystery Series). I found the book tiresome in three ways. First, in discussions among the characters, the punch line for the chapter is often repeated. For example, "He's got options from here" (or a fragment of it) is repeated seven times in the short space of chapters four and five! Second, the plot moves rather slowly, in part because the author presents a lot of detail, some of it apparently mundane. Finally, I got tired of the language-- there's too much gratuitous profanity for me to enjoy reading the book.

I can't comment on the plot as a whole. However, the supposed "master criminals" have made a strategic error (in my opinion) when they placed both kidnap victims in the same room. There seem to me to be a number of reasons why the victims should not be allowed to interact; I can't think of any significant value to the kidnappers to permit interactions.

The detectives' actions don't appear to be very inspired to this point, either. Going through boxes and boxes of lawyers' case records not only violates attorney-client privilege, but also has very poor cost effectiveness.

The author hasn't captured my interest. So, I quit.

1.0 étoiles sur 5 Is This A Parody? 8 décembre 2011

Had this been a paperback book, I'd have tossed it aside after the first thirty pages. The writing consists of page after page of trite expressions and phrases strung together. Some examples: "tough as nails," "Summer was a cool customer," "spilled the beans," "The scuttle-butt says there's going to be a big powwow here soon." I actually felt embarrassed for the author.

The plot is thin, with very little buildup of tension. It's resolution depends upon certain reasoning and actions, but these factors are not adequately explained. The characters are two-dimensional, and the protagonists come across as Batman and three Robins. The mayor of Gotham (but not of St. Paul) would have been proud of them. Conversations felt stilted and unnatural.

About 70% through, I began to think it was all intentional--a parody of a "real" police thriller. Otherwise, it read like a long story written for a Sophomore English class.
