Présentation de l'éditeur

Annotated: in addition to the novel this ebook cointains 4 essays on Leo Tolstoy and his works

The Death of Ivan Ilyich (Russian: Смерть Ивана Ильича, Smert' Ivana Ilyicha), first published in 1886, is a novella by Leo Tolstoy, and is considered to be one of the masterpieces of his late fiction, written shortly after his religious conversion of the late 1870s.
The novella tells the story of the life and death, at the age of 45, of a high-court judge in 19th-century Russia—a miserable husband, proud father, and upwardly-mobile member of Russia's professional class, the object of Tolstoy's unremitting satire. Living what seems to be a good life, his dreadful relationship with his wife notwithstanding, Ivan Ilyich Golovin bangs his side while putting up curtains in a new apartment intended to reflect his family's superior status in society. Within weeks, he has developed a strange taste in his mouth and a pain that will not go away. Numerous expensive doctors—friends of friends of friends—are visited in their surgeries or called to the judge's bedside, but beyond muttering about blind gut and floating kidneys, they can neither explain nor treat his condition, and it soon becomes clear that Ivan Ilyich is dying...

Five stars for the work, three for the presentation. If you think Tolstoy can only produce blockbusters like War and Peace and Anna Karenina, I assure you he can pack just as much meaning into a novella like Ivan Ilyich, which can be read easily in barely an hour. Not that you should try to speed-read your way through it; careful reading will be rewarded.

This Kindle edition is not up to the standard of another Tolstoy book I just read, the Carefully Crafted Classics version of Anna Karenina. In the latter, there are several embedded footnotes that provide context, and every use of French is translated in brackets immediately following their appearance. In Ivan Ilyich, the French is simply set off by asterisks with no translation. Also, there are no explanatory footnotes at all; perhaps the compilers of this edition thought none were necessary. There are multiple typos, most of them involving the lack of capitalization at the start of a sentence. A few words, however, are wrong ("camp" instead of "came," for example).

There are four essays that start this edition: on Tolstoy, on Tolstoy as Writer, on Tolstoy's Place in European Literature, and Works From 1886 to 1906. These are all interesting if rather old-fashioned, and much can be learned from them. There are a few formatting glitches that result in sentence fragments and hinder understanding. There are no serious errors, except as noted above, in the actual text of Ilyich.

Bottom line: The price is right. Buy this Kindle edition, make allowances for the typos, and read it slowly. Somewhat depressing but definitely worth the effort.

Simply and beautifully written, this book embodies the great gap separating the sick and dying from the well.

Ivan Ilych seems to lead a charmed life until he becomes sick. This slim book shows how he is gradually alienated from all the well people in his life, and how these otherwise decent people disengage from him, how they callously revel in not being sick like Ivan Ilych. But the reader does go through Ivan Ilych's sickness and alienation with him. And by feeling how terrible (and inevitable) it is to sicken and die, it also easier to understand why well people shut out his experience.

Typical of Tolstoy's stories however not his best in my opinion. I do enjoy reading his books though. It was a good quick read.
