4.0 étoiles sur 5 A beautiful baby book for advanced cake artists! 25 octobre 2011

Another delivery from the cake stork!!

Of the umpteen books that Debbie Brown has written, I have found this to be her sweetest yet. With her daughter Hannah in mind, Momma Debbie has created some of the most adorable cakes that anyone would want to make for a special little someone!! Or maybe for a special big someone who is expecting a special little someone!

English cake queen Debbie Brown has created 12 projects of infant/toddler/little child whimsy and done so in grand style. Babies, bunnies, blocks, and other such infantile reverie have been presented to the avid cake decorator.

But I would suggest you would need to be quite comfortable in your skills, or at least have the patience to learn many skills, as you attempt these projects. The photography is clear, colorful, and close up and the projects have the major steps in photograph form. But I feel that the ability to connect the photography with the written instructions would require you to be at ease in cake decorating. I would not discourage a beginner who loves this type of artistry to stay away from these projects; in fact, I would encourage these folks to have a good reference and/or foundation book in cake decorating, and use it in conjunction with "Baby Cakes".

As I said earlier, there are 12 major projects presented but if you count the side projects that go along with them, you're looking at over 18 additional projects to add to your credit in the forms of cupcakes, mini-cakes, and other assorted forms.

The book is filled with so much sweet fun:

Using a boxed index, you are given a list of measurements (in both American and metric values) and ingredients for each project. The recipes themselves are for either a Butter Sponge Cake (basically a yellow cake) or Chocolate (Devil's Food). There are also the recipes for making the Rice Krispie Treats that you need for the projects that require a firm foundation; not everything can be made with cake as it won't hold up well for some of the manipulation necessary in some projects. Cake Pops/Cake Truffles (the latest craze) are a fantastic way of using the cake scraps in a fun and useful way. Syrups, ganache, buttercream, sugarpaste, etc are the remaining recipes that you will need for the projects.

A visual, written, and numbered tutorial of equipment used and needed for the variety of steps in these projects.

This is the general explanation of the foundation of cake decorating that is crucial to building the cake base such as torting, dirty icing, sugarpaste/fondant, dowelling, etc. You really need to know this before even attempting the rest as the strength of your base cake will determine whether your structure will hold up. There are other books out there that are great for the basics as this one just goes over it quickly.

Wash Day: A very simple cake that a beginner can do easily. The work is basic but the results are fantastic as you have a graduated, 2-tiered round cake with 3-D baby clothes draped on a "clothesline" that goes around the cake. The mommy-to-be is also a part of the scene. Mini-teddy bear parcel cakes and mini washing basket cupcakes round out the presentation.

Stork Delivery: Another great beginners project as you create a graduated, 3-tiered "sky" with 3-D clouds as well as a 3-D Stork delivering a baby in their little bundle!! Just adorable!! Mini buggy/pram cuppies project are also included.

A Mother's Love: The cake is simple but it would be the figure modeling in this one that might be the challenge for you. A single round cake with mother looking lovingly at her little blessing. Mini baby bundles are the cupcakes for the extra project.

Crying Babies: I absolutely LOVE this project; my favorite!! The cake is a simple 2-tiered project but the modeled babies in this one are hilarious!! Our 3 little diapered angels are upset and/or crying and the facial expressions are too funny in that the mouths are big, open, and wide. A piece of black sugarpaste is used to show the cavernous mouth with small red tonsils in the center and 2 tiny teeth on the bottom of the mouth; squinty eyes with sugarpaste "tears" finish the infant meltdown. Making the head, torso, arms, and legs really isn't that difficult and with a little self-love and patience, a beginner could tackle this easily. Besides, any parent who sees this would totally connect with this one and this would be a very welcomed cake at any baby shower. There are diaper/nappy bags, mini baby faces, and pacifier mini cakes projects included.

Pea in a Pod: Once again, not that hard for a beginner to make. Actually, rather simple as there are just a couple of steps needed for the basic structure. A baby in a pea pod is a great shower cake and making the little mini-pea pod cakes would round off this sweet presentation.

Toy Box: A toy box with some precious baby toys peeking out from under the lid is a real treat! If you can follow directions, you can easily make the animals shown. Add the cupcakes with little sugarpaste toys on top and you have a really great gift for someone special!!

Bears: The cover photo. This one will take a bit more time and patience but definitely a real heart warmer! 3 teddies waiting to greet you as the main cake with mini bears and bear faces as the side projects. (Note: If you haven't gotten your skills perfected yet when working with sugarpaste to make it smooth, this would be a great project. The one teddy is kind of plush and leaving those fingerprints on the sugarpaste are perfect for his "coat"!)

Fairy Castles: I must say that this a will be a real winner for the beginner because the castle isn't as difficult as it looks; everything is pretty much either square or round; no intricate corners and such. Making the turrets is simple and the battlements around the castle are a piece of cake (yes, pun intended; couldn't help myself!). The modeled figures are up to you, which will take a bit of time, but as you keep making figurines, this will become second nature to you too. Mini castle cakes and crowned cupcakes are the side projects.

Baby Blocks: Sweet, sweet, sweet! Everything is pretty much squared so you're dealing with cutting straight lines to make this cake consisting of 3 graduated blocks on top of a wagon. The wheels and Mr. Bunny are the more laborious part of this project. Mini cake blocks are the extra something special to add to the fun.

Cute Kittens: If by chance you subscribe to "Cakes and Sugarcraft" Magazine, the Autumn 2011 edition also has this project in it by Debbie. It is an absolutely precious project of 3 kittens playing a pillow. Other poses are also included for our little feline friends as well as paw-print cupcakes. Definitely more labor-intensive but so very worth it!

Baby's First Doll: Who wouldn't want a dolly cake? Very simple to make but a really "wow!" effect especially for a little girl!! Mini doll cakes suggested as an extra project.

Noah's Ark: "Two by two they entered the ark". And so it began, so many years ago, and now you too can share your idea of that event by making this delicious cake. The cake itself will keep you busy for a while as there is the boat itself then the ark and the roof. Most of the animals are only the heads so there isn't too much work but they will take a bit of time regardless. Mini ark cakes and animal cupcakes can accompany them.

3 templates are included. I would suggest visiting some of the cake supply websites that sell cutters, molds, etc to help you make some of the items such as the laundry/baby clothes for "Wash Day" or the crowns for "Fairy Castles". They are located both here in the States as well as abroad.

A listing of shops, manufacturers, and distributors of supplies. There are many more out there so you will always find what you need somewhere!

Babies are blessings even when they are a surprise because you will always find loving arms out there waiting to hold them. These cakes give testament to the joy that they bring to us. I am sure that any of these cakes that you will make for someone will leave a long lasting impression in their hearts. Thanks Debbie for your infinite well of creativity and the joy that your visions help us bring to others! Peace!

All the cakes are gorgeous and very original but the fact is that a lot of steps on how to achieve the results are not shown in photos.

Oh my gosh, where do I begin? What a wonderful book!!!!!! The illustrations are BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!! The directions are detailed with pictures to accompany them. Just by looking at the book provides inspiration and makes me believe that I can do the cake projects. I want every single one of Debbie Brown's books. I also purchased 50 Easy Party Cakes and feel the same way about that book as well. This book should absolutely be one of your resources for cake decorating.
