Présentation de l'éditeur

Nothing says a good time than a cake. So with budgets being tight, when you cannot hire a cake boss why not become your own ace of cakes by crafting a fun and stylish Deco Cake! In her English language debut Japanese Internet sensation JUNKO complies thirty-two of her most festival and stylish cake rolls for a global market.

JUNKO starts off with a well-known cake recipe for the traditional roll cake, often found in dessert shops across Eastern Europe. She then revitalizes this classic with a modern flair by going into great detail to distinguish each of the 32 cakes in this book for every special occasion. JUNKO's cakes are part crafting, as her baked on decorations are essentially simple candy-making projects, and part baking and all fun!

Included in this 90 page book are 16 design stencils to use to make patterns on your Deco Cakes. Once you master these patterns, make your own and customize your personalized cakes.

Fantastic, and I'd love to see more of Junko's books translated 22 mai 2014

Format: Broché
Junko has written several cookbooks with some of the cutest ideas and designs, well illustrated and explained to be easy to recreate in your home kitchen. Unfortunately, most of them haven't been translated to English. Just this one so far!

This was a great choice to translate, and I'm so glad to have it. There are a lot of fantastic designs. For Mother's Day, Christmas, Valentine's, and all-occasion cakes, this is a great collection. There are tips for decorating and packaging to turn your gorgeous cakes into gifts for friends. Believe it or not, the decorated versions are even better than the cover photos. The baked inlaid designs are impressive looking on their own, combined with themed decorations, it takes it right over the top into something that looks very professional.

To start with, you'll need a 25x25 cm swiss roll pan to make the cakes following the recipes in the book. Unfortunately, that's not a common size in the USA, but a 10x10 inch square pizza pan will work just fine. I imagine a 10 x 10 inch cake pan will work too, but it's easier to get the cake out of the shallow pizza pan than a deep cake pan. A 10 inch pan is just a tiny bit bigger than 25x25 cm.

The instructions are written originally in precise weight based measurements that are used commonly, and to get the exact cake recipe recommended, you'll also need a kitchen scale. However, US style volume measurements are included.

After that, it's just following the step by step instructions, which also include filling ideas. These cakes have lots of flavor and texture coming from the combination of cake, cream and fruit fillings. If your only experience with jelly roll cakes is the kind sold in supermarket bakeries, or worse luck, those chocolate dipped, plastic wrapped individual cakes- these will be a revelation. Great flavors using good ingredients makes a big difference.

The designs are fantastic, for the more complex designs, there are stencils to trace on parchment paper to follow. For the simple designs, they are well illustrated and the techniques explained well. You don't need to be an artist to make a fantastic looking cake using this method. It's nearly as simple as a coloring book. Some of the designs have elements painted on after baking, but most of the design is done before that.

I absolutely recommend it. If you have your own ideas, but just want to practice with the technique and get a good recipe for making these gorgeous confections- it's a good starting point. If you want to be able to make impressive looking from scratch cakes with minimal effort, it's a good choice.
I received a complimentary copy of the book to review on my craft blog- Don't Eat the Paste. I received no other compensation, and my review is my honest opinion of the product.

Cute cakes that will impress! 31 juillet 2014

I am a big fan of Junko and am thrilled that she decided to get one of her books translated. I currently own the one with her Rilakkuma cake on the cover, but I had to use my phone to translate the ingredients and directions. So it's nice to have a full English book from her. The instructions are straight forward and easy to follow. You don't need to be a master baker to make any of these. The cakes are simple to make, yet the wow factor is through the roof! Beautiful and delicious! Just make sure you have a scale as I believe this is a preferred way of measuring ingredients.

The back of the book contains many wonderful designs that you put underneath your parchment paper to trace. But don't feel that you are restricted to just these designs! Once you get the hang of splitting the batter into colors, you can just print out any design you want to follow. If you want to have text on your cake, make sure you mirror the image otherwise your text will be backwards. I learned the hard way (-___-)".

I like this book but after the first cake the instructions are a bit difficult. The designs are fun but time consuming to make. I did use these ideas to create a "jelly roll" designs of my own. Patience is a must. But beautiful gifts.
Not that sweet, and very spongey 11 juin 2015

After owning this book for over a year, I finally made a deco cake! The base cake recipe is a win in my book. Not that sweet, and very spongey. My only qualm is that the decor adds a lot of complexity in the baking process (for someone with a small kitchen and limited bowls). I attempted to make the hearts covered one, and it didn't turn out looking like the picture. I was disappointed since I took a lot of time to make it all pretty and whatnot! However, it was so good... I didn't mind the visual mess-up. I lessen the sugar in the whip cream and chopped up strawberries for the filling.

I will continue to make a normal swiss roll with this recipe, but not the decorations.
The patterns included in the book are just adorable though. 21 avril 2015

This is the only recipe book for Junko's deco cakes but the recipes are all over the place in terms of consistency in ingredient measurements. I think it might be a translation problem. I'm not experienced enough as a baker to figure out which measurements are wrong. Also, the pan size that she recommends is extremely hard to find. I ended up buying one in a specialty restaurant supply store. The patterns included in the book are just adorable though.
