Description de l'ouvrage

10 juillet 2012

After years of hard work, Gina Foxton, chef extraordinaire andformer runner-up Miss Teen Vidalia Onion, is hosting her own show, Fresh Start, on local Georgia public television. She's also dating the producer. But when Fresh goes bad, and she catches her boyfriend in flagrante delicto with the boss's wife, Gina decides it's time to pursue bigger dreams. Namely, a gig on national television.

Gina knows she's destined to be the Cooking Channel's next superstar. But the execs also have their eyes on Tate Moody, Mr. "Kill It and Grill It" himself, host of the hunting-and-fishing cooking show Vittles. The ultimate man's man, Tate's a tasty side of beef with a large, swooning female fan base. Gina's loyal devotees consist of her free-spirit college dropout sister and her mother—who calls every single day.

But when the smoke clears there can only be one TV chef standing as Gina and Tate get ready for the cook-off of their lives.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 EQUAL PARTS SAVVY AND SOUTHERN CHARM 15 juillet 2010
Format:CD
You don't have to be a foodie to enjoy this lightly romantic, often laughable look behind the scenes at a television cooking show. Couldn't be more contemporary although, of course, fictionalized by the busy pen of Mary Kay Andrews (Blue Christmas, Hissy Fit, Little Bitty Lies, etc). Fans know that she delivers on-target often tongue-in-cheek looks at her characters and situations - fun listening and reading!

I thoroughly enjoyed Isabel Keating's narration of "Hissy Fit" and wrote, "...is a fun, thoroughly enjoyable listening experience." My response to Deep Dish is the same. Keating is an experienced stage actress and a Tony nominee for her role as Judy Garland in The Boy From Oz. Perfectly voicing aces chef Gina Foxton, she imbues her with equal parts southern charm, savvy, and spice.

Gina is an important chef, a prime preparer of southern foods, and has her own cooking show, "Fresh Start" on Georgia Public Television. She means the word "Fresh" literally, and is more than upset when someone provides what she calls a fake cheese for one of her filmings.

However, she soon has a great deal more to be upset about - her very popular show is canceled when the prime backer backs out (pun intended). Why? Because her boyfriend and the producer has been sleeping with the backer's wife. But Gina's not going to stew forever. She knows that the Cooking Channel is looking for a new face and a new star. She sets her chef's cap for that job and finds that the Channel can't decide between Gina and Tate Moody, a handsome hunk who hunts, fishes and has a show of his own - what else but "Vittles"? The Channel proposes a cook-off to choose the winner.

It will come as no surprise to Andrews's listeners/readers that more than spaghetti sauce begins to simmer in the kitchen and soon comes to a rolling boil with lots of merry mishaps and love among the ladles. Nonetheless, as is said, "Too many cooks spoil the broth," so who will be the winner?

Enjoy!

The above reviewer nailed the plot, so I won't go into that. Gina is someone a lot of women can relate to (bad hair day, Martian men), and Tate is the ultimate good ol' boy who really does ooze charm AND can cook well. Their bantering sparkles like champagne, but these two are totally authentic Southerners, including Gina's family. YES, her mama does call about every day, and you can still find her type in every small Georgia town. As a lagniappe, there are three (fairly simple) recipes at the end - what do you expect from a story about two people fighting to get on The Cooking Channel.
Those who love Dorothea Frank and Anne Siddons will flat-out love this one. Mary Kay Andrews just has Frank's knack for capturing the rhythm of the South and spinning it into a laugh-aloud, recognize- yourself tale. She's about as addictive as Co'cola and Moonpies:)

I should preface this by saying that I adore Mary Kay Andrews/ Kathy Hogan Trocheck (same author writing under two different names). Normally I find her books really entertaining, and they're among my favorites, so I pre-ordered this one.

Unfortunately, the cast of characters just left me flat in this one. The usual zippy dialogue and entertaining scenarios never materialized. Maybe if it had been from another author I didn't like so much this wouldn't have mattered, but I have such high expectations for her books that I found this one a big disappointment. It's definitely not on a par with her Savannah books or Hissy Fit. Get this one from the library, and save your pennies for the next Mary Kay!

I too am a fan of Mary Kay Andrews, I too pre-ordered Deep Dish... I couldn't even finish the book, it was that boring. I gave it to a friend (who also loves Ms. Andrews' books) and she couldn't get through it either.
At first I thought well, maybe I'm just disappointed because these are new characters but no, it was just a boring book.
Before you buy this book, read excerpts, it is NOT Ms. Andrews usual fare.
