Deep In the Well is Jerry Ricks sitting on the side of the Well at Dockery Farm where Charley Patten, Howlin' Wolf and Roebuck Staples grew up. He told me that he loved the idea that so many of those pioneers of the great pioneers of the blues were probably buried here.

Jerry Ricks was from Philadelphia PA where he was the booking agent for the bluesmen at the Second Fret Coffeehouse in Philly. He knew all the bluesmen in town and found a lot of the arists recorded by Prestige Bluesville's Ken Goldstein. When Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry came to town they said to hime, "I hear Lonnie Johnson moved here in the 1950s," to which he responded, "Want to go to his house?" Lonnie Johnson was the bellman at the Bellevue Stratford Hotel in mid-Philadelphoa and once rediscovered has yet another career unitl his death.

Jerry's guitar students included two young Philadelphia musicians, Darryl Hall and John Oates and he played on some of their albums.

During the 1960s during the blues revival Dick Waterman hired him to tour as second guitar for Son House, Mississippi John Hurt, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Lightnin' Hopkins, Skip James, and the lot. No one knew their music and licks so intimatelly as Philadelphia Jerry Ricks. He was not only a great accompanist but a brilliantly imaginative musician on his own.

In Austria when he lived their he L&H records. They are excellent but nearly impossible to find and often combine his music with jazz musicians (a la Broonzy) and white blues guitarists and singers in the European tradition. (Wrong packaging for purists, huh?)

I met Jerry at the Port Townsend Blues Festival where he was the lead educator. We met as he was the only musician who I could talk to about Delta Blues. We started talking and stopped four hours later when he had to go on stage. It was then I discovered that Jerry Ricks was the link between the 1830s blues musicians like Big Bill Broonzy and today.

Why do I love this album so much? Jerry Ricks and I were "brothers" from the day we met, it's a great album and I have the fond memory of buying the very first copy out of the box from him at the Sunflower Blues Festival in Clarksdale.

If you like the gutsy blues of Leadbelly, Muddy Waters and Josh White, you'll love this new CD. This guy is really good, and I look forward to more from him in the years ahead.
