It seems like an ocean full of ink has been expended printing the dizzying array of self defense books that are available to today's inquisitive readers. Unfortunately, many of them aren't worth the time it takes to read them. This book is an exception to that rule.

This book really differentiates itself in the way that it deals with mental inhibitions and roadblocks that many people don't even realize that they have when it comes to dealing with violence. The author offers up practical exercises that can help readers get past these hold-ups.

He is constantly pointing out the inconsistencies in the common perception of violence and offering practical advice to counter them and keep from falling into traps that these lead to.

The tips aren't all cerebral. He offers up tips on fighting dirty and hitting harder that can benefit anyone.

This book could use a good copy-editor. A number of spelling and grammar mistakes will be found throughout, but it was not so much as to make the text unreadable or confusing. The book is written in an interesting, yet inconsistent style. Much of it is written for beginners and put very simply, but sometimes the author introduces unnecessarily complex terms and concepts. Yes, these terms and concepts and terms are explained, but they are unnecessary additions that add complexity that a beginner doesn't need. I would rather see this book written in one style or the other: To the experts or to the beginners.

This book has a properly formatted and linked Table Of Contents, but skipping from chapter to chapter is inconsistent and toward the end only skips between sections within the chapter.

Warning: This book does contain crude and vulgar expletives. Personally, I found it to be unnecessary. The author could have made his point without it and it limits the audience.

Despite the style, formatting, and editing errors, I am giving this book a 4-star rating because of the content that is so valuable and conveniently compiled in one place. I hope a future edition of this book will polish it up and make it more palatable to a wider audience.

This book is highly recommended for:
- Anyone who cares about the safety of themselves and their family
- Anyone who wants realism in their self defense tips and advice
- Anyone who understands the importance of mental training and preparation for effective personal defense

If you enjoy reading about personal security and tactics, I also recommend Tactical Bible Stories: Personal Security Tips from the Bible for a different(and clean) perspective on keeping you and your family safe in dangerous times.

I've always said that as a self-defense instructor, and someone who teaches principles and strategies of staying safe, I need to continually learn from others. I'm constantly reading, watching videos, and attending seminars so I can better help others. I also believe in supporting those who are also out there helping others stay safe and defend themselves. This is especially true of those doing a great job. That is why I want to recommend "Self-Defense Tips Everyone Should Know: Practical advice to help you take responsibility for your own personal safety" by Neal Martin.

Right from the title I liked this. "Take responsibility for your own personal safety." Yes! This is what I teach people. Also from the title, you get that this is a book of self-defense tips. It's not an exhaustive text on self-defense, but rather some practical advice to help you stay safe.

There are thirteen short chapters in this book, which include: Take Responsibility For Your Own Personal Safety, Make A Game Plan, Awareness, Improve Your Communication Skills, Know Yourself, Learn To Manage Fear And Adrenaline, Learn Situational Control Skills, Get Fit, Train In Combatives, Learn To Hit Hard, Tap Your Aggression, Learn To Hit First When It's Necessary, Self-Defence And The Law, and a bonus chapter of Violent Intent and Instilling Panic In Your Attacker.

Martin starts out a bit harsh with his words to a lot of the "self-defense" material out on the web, but then quickly gets into what he wants to share about self-defense and staying safe. I like that he starts out be insisting that you refuse to be a victim and take responsibility for your own personal safety. This is so important. Next was the chapter on awareness, a topic I write and speak on quite a bit. I liked what Martin had to say in this area. I also liked that he added communication in the book, but would have liked a bit more, but I do understand this is just a book of tips. I'd hope after reading this, readers would continue their education in effective communication skills. They can and will help you stay out of trouble and more safe. And I could say this about other chapters too. There is more to be said on all of the topics here, and I'm sure Martin could fill a huge volume with what he knows. He pared it down to some simple essentials. And he did so well.

The only negative things I can say about this simple guide are that I found some typos and the font used for some of the quotes is a bit harder to read. A different font might make the quotes not only easier to read, but stand out and be more poignant. And when these are the only negatives you can find, you are reaching, and that's because this book does contain a lot of good, simple, practical advice that can help people stay safe and protect themselves if needed. The few editing and formatting mistakes don't take away from the important message Martin is conveying.

Some people might object to some of the language, and it might not be the first self-defense book you give your young children. The book contains four letter words, and Martin has his reasons for using them. (Get you mad and in the right mindset to take on your attacker.) I point this out because some of the groups I teach to, and who look to me for recommendations, would be offended if they were not first prepared for some of the four letter words in this text. For others, it is not an issue at all.

Staying safe is important. I've already said that I agree with Martin that we all need to take personal responsibility for our own safety, and one of the ways you can do just that is by reading this simple book of self-defense tips and incorporating the advice into your life and training. Do it and stay safe!

Self Defense Tips Everyone Should Know by Neal Martin is a realistic and practical book about the realities of violence and skills you need to successfully resolve such conflict. As a former law enforcement officer and officer survival instructor who has taught firearms, defensive tactics, use of force, combat mindset to hundreds of officers it is not difficult to spot someone who is exaggerating or bluffing their skill set for the sake of sales or notoriety. Prior to being in law enforcement I worked as a doorman at a bar that was known for violent encounters so I can relate to Martin's doorman experience. It is definitely a sink or swim experience that will either make you rise to your abilities or find another line of work.

Martin has written a book extrapolated from real world experience that is based on reality and not academic theory. He pulls no punches and provides valuable insights that will benefit both the beginner and experienced combative student. New combative students will get an introduction to mandatory rudimentary skills. Experienced combative students will see that the author provides useful insight and valuable nuggets of information. Even if you don't agree with the author's point of view it is always valuable to obtain a different perspective and see how it can apply to your paradigm. One bit of advice when reading this book is that you should take your time and not rush. Some of the concepts, information, and exercises require time to absorb and understand. If you read the book through from beginning to end you will miss these opportunities and not get the full benefit of the book. This is especially important for those new to combatives and those who do not have a lot of experience with violence.

Aspects that I liked include:

+ This book is written in a "common man" style. There are plenty of other books available to give you the science and research behind the topics provided in this book. I find this to be a benefit because the author is not trying to convince you that the information is correct and instead just lays the information out for you to absorb.

+ Martin has really thought through the realities of physical confrontation and the toxic environment of violence based on experience; not conjecture.

+ Focuses on justifiable use of force situation and not wanton violence for the sake of violence. The use of violence must be legal, moral, and ethical.

+ No ego from the author. Martin comes across as a humble and leaves ego out of this book. Very refreshing.

+ Discusses the difference between real fear and psychological fear.

+ Martin stresses the importance of confidence and self-belief and how this relates to your ability to successfully prevail in a violent encounter.

+ Self-reliance is stressed. You and only you are responsible for your personal safety and security. Don't rely on someone else to save you when violence rears its ugly head.

+ Training for fighting is emphasized over training for endurance. Many fights last only a brief period of time when you will expend a lot of energy very quickly and explosively. Train for these types of encounters and not for long distance training. As the saying goes: Train how you fight; fight how you train.

+ Martin goes into detail why hitting first and hitting hard is often your best chance of ending a confrontation. Too many people have a hard time with this concept yet it is a critical component of your plan. If you don't have this worked out in your mind you are setting yourself up for failure.

If you have ever faced true violence you will read little things that the author writes which confirm that he knows what he is talking about based on real world experience. Only those who have been there will understand. This cannot be faked and such information is only gleaned, learned, and polished through experience. And sometimes you have to shed a little blood to learn (or earn) the lesson.

One of the aspects about this book that I really appreciate is that the author is not egotistical and does not get into "war stories" that are all about him and his skills. The focus of this book is about providing valuable information for surviving a violent encounter. This is especially refreshing considering todays combative market. A lot of information is covered in this short book but do not be fooled as it will take a lot of time, effort, and training to perfect. There are no shortcuts.

Overall Assessment:

Self Defense Tips Everyone Should Know by Neal Martin is a book that I highly recommend as part of your combative library. Whether you are new or experienced you will obtain valuable information from this book. I would not mind meeting the author one day and share experiences over a beer.

Neal contacted me because of reviews I had written of other martial arts books and asked if I could review his. I gladly granted his request. I took my time ingesting his book because I wanted to make sure I could formulate a balanced review of it, and I came up with exactly that: after reading it, I have two positive and two negative comments about it...although I wouldn't say they are TRUE negatives. There is one topic where I wish he had gone more in depth, and another where I just have a different opinion than him.

First off, Neal writes the book in a very conversational tone. It's almost like he is speaking to you the way he would in person, which means he feels free to use "curse" words. I don't recall ever reading a self-defense/martial arts book where the writer swore in it. To readers with a more conservative bend, this might be offensive; to me it was just different.

The best feature of the book is that Neal talks about the MENTAL preparation needed to defend yourself. This isn't gone over enough, not in schools or in books. It isn't enough to be a black belt in tae kwon do; you have to mentally prepare yourself to do damage to another human being. It seems like it would be a no brainer. After all, the person coming at you is trying to do YOU harm, so you would think it'd be easy to hit them, right? Wrong. There is quite a big difference between practicing those techniques in the air and then using them on someone. You have to train your mind as well as your body so that, when the moment of truth comes, you can become MORE aggressive than the jerk who's attacking you.

Now for the two downsides. There is a brief section on self-defense and law, which I was excited to read because (aside from reading ONE article about this in INSIDE KUNG FU MAGAZINE), I've never seen anyone address it. With all the different laws that exist in different countries/states/cities, I knew Neal couldn't be all-inclusive, but I was hoping for more than what he wrote. This section boils down to an attempt for Neal to state his belief that he doesn't feel the law can truly tell him what he has to do to defend himself. In an ideal world, this would be true. Unfortunately, our world is not ideal...or we wouldn't need self-defense in the first place! There IS such a thing as going too far to defend yourself. For example: if a thug corners you in an alley and you knock him to the ground, you are supposed to run away. If you stop to kick him in the temple once the threat has been removed, then YOU will be the one on trial (should the law get involved). I wish Neal had at least given people advice on how they could look up self-defense laws for where they live.

The other negative (which is more just a difference in opinion) relates to Neal's stance on traditional martial arts schools. Long story short: he feels they are a waste of time. For the most part I can agree, especially if you go to a school where they focus on tournaments, form competitions and training you to break things. (To quote Bruce Lee from ENTER THE DRAGON, "Boards don't hit back.") However, there are a lot of schools out there that still teach you how to apply the style in self-defense situations. (When I attended my first wing chun kung fu class, I saw IMMEDIATELY how it could be effective on the street.)

However, as I said, this is just where Neal and I differ in opinion. All in all, this book is a worthwhile read. The section about mental preparation alone is worth the price of admission.

There are people who say you don't need to know this sort of material, because the likelihood of your being attacked is remote. I disagree. I've been a women's self defense instructor for over two decades, and crime statistics have consistently shown that one-in-three to one-in-four women will be the victim of a sexual assault in her lifetime. Those are pretty steep odds if you ask me, and based on the stories I've heard from my students, those stats are pretty solid.

Certainly, violent crime rates have been going down since the 90's, but to say you don't need to learn this material is like saying you don't need to wear a seat belt, because the chance of being in a motor vehicle accident is trivial. Personally, I'd rather wear the seat belt and never need it, than need it someday and not be wearing it. And the same goes for learning the physical, mental, and emotional skills of self-defense.

In my opinion, mental preparedness is more important than physical preparedness in self-defense. And, if I had to recommend just one book for my wife or sister or daughter to read on self-defense, this book would be at the top of my list because it is both realistic and comprehensive in covering the necessary subject matter.

Potential readers should note that this book does not teach actual techniques of self-defense. Thinking you can learn such things from a book is naive - go take a self-defense class if you want to learn physical skills. But what this book does teach, and teach very well, is the other side of self-defense training - psychological and emotional preparedness for a violent confrontation.

In almost three decades of martial arts and self-defense training and practice, I can count on the fingers of one hand how many martial arts instructors I have met who have addressed the issue of psychological preparedness and tactical awareness in everyday self-defense. Police, military, and executive security personnel are well aware of how important they are, but sadly even the best physical training programs in the civilian sector rarely touch on these topics.

Thankfully, now you can read Neal's book and learn what the smartest self-defense instructors teach about mindset, awareness, threat levels and risk assessment as it pertains to personal safety and survival in a violent world. And, he knows his stuff. Not only is the author an instructor under Geoff Thompson, he also has extensive experience working as a night club doorman as well (in the U.S. we call them bouncers). And in this case, good training + lots of real world experience = a very good self defense book.

So, if you want to learn what you need to know to prepare yourself mentally and emotionally (as much as one can) for surviving a violent encounter, read this book. It's well worth the price, and what you read here could very well save your life someday.
