5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great collection 2 août 2011
Par FictionFan - Publié sur Amazon.com
Normally I would wait till I'd finished a book before reviewing it. But there's so much packed into this massive volume that I reckon it would take me twenty years to get through it all! I won't list the contents since there's a full listing in the product description, but obviously all the well-known novels are here, together with the poetry and lots of lesser known work. There is also a biography of the author written by his son-in-law JG Lockhart soon after Scott's death - thankfully an abridged version since apparently the original ran to ten volumes!

I started with the earliest of his novels, Waverley, which is credited with being the first historical novel in the English language and which for some reason I had never previously read. Set in 1745 and looking at the last throes of Jacobitism through the eyes of our young English hero, it is filled with Scott's usual wit and fine descriptive writing and characterisation. It is a delight to know that it is only the first of many novels in my new Scott collection!

The inclusion of the original illustrations is an added bonus and they are well suited to the muted, almost sepia, screen of the Kindle. At the beginning of each novel is a short introduction, not in-depth, but giving snippets of interesting background information. There is also a glossary of archaic Scottish words, very helpful even to an archaic Scot like myself. It can be accessed either from the Table of Contents or by using the Search facility within the Menu.

The formatting is fine with the exception of footnotes. These are placed within the text at the relevant point and are sometimes helpful in the detail they provide. However, sometimes they will say, cryptically, `See Note 5' for example. I would, if I could work out where the notes are. However, this is a minor drawback in what is otherwise an excellent, very comprehensive collection. This is a volume I will be dipping in and out of for years to come.

This is the set to get if you want EVERYTHING Scott ever wrote in one bundle, and this is the only one a Scott lover will ever need. (Plus it enabled me to free up a lot of shelf space occupied by my hitherto incomplete collection of Scott.) There was one major formatting glitch; the 5 volumes of "Tales of a Grandfather" were oddly formatted--but that has been fixed and everything is now perfectly formatted. (Thanks to both Delphi and Amazon for updating my earlier edition.) This is the only way to get so much Scott in one place and the price is ridiculously low. I highly recommend this and all the other Delphi editions.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A Favorite Scott book, Tales of a Grandfather 21 octobre 2012

Delighted to find this favorite of my youth, Tales of a Grandfather, included in The Complete Works of Sir Walter Scott, This collection is such a bargain, despite quite a few minor typos and an occasional startling typological whopper, not enough to spoil the reading, but enough to give the reader familiar with Scott pause now and then and entirely flummox the unwary. At 2.99, though, this reader is quite willing to edit mentally while thoroughly appreciating having Scott's entire life's work readily at hand in easily portable, read everywhere form. This package includes so many favorite books! There's no way to write an adequate description of all, so am focusing on just this one treasure. Today I am relishing Sir Walter Scott's Tales of a Grandfather, a retelling of the history of the British Isles intended to appeal to both children and adults and succeeding on both counts. If you're into the early history of Britain, the first book of "Grandfather" is a must, if only for Scott's vivid retelling of the MacBeth story and his uncluttered outline of the series of occupiers of the 3 lands (as known in his time) with concise, memorable explanations of the transitions from one to the other. Again, a bargain, and a welcome addition to the affordable classics library on my Kindle. This package could be improved by clickable links to definitions from the Scottish vernacular, especially in his earliest novels.

You have to adjust your language imagination and whole attitude to forgotten times. But if you can do it you'll find Sir Walter Scott's tales are full of as much action & adventure as any modern movie. The plots are so incedible you'd doubt they could be real. But read his introductory notes & you'll find they're not very far from real. Intoductory notes to the tales I've read are at least as entertaining as the stories. Sometimes the narrative is extremely funny. I rate Scott as on par with Chaucer and Charles Dickens. That is to say he was one of the best ever!

I had forgotten what great stories he wrote almost 2 centuries ago. A thrill a page. And he must have done much research into various periods of history.
