Présentation de l'éditeur

When times are darkest, some vampires desire more than blood …

England, 1465. Mortal men clash in the War of the Roses for the English crown, while vampire warriors’ move undetected among their ranks, savoring the flow of blood that battlefields provide.

Vampire prince, Severian Pearce, fears the revelation of the immortal clans to humankind should King Henry fall from power. While in pursuit of Henry’s enemies, Severian comes to the aid of Meridian Neville, a human woman he craves—and not for the scent of her blood … Meridian is torn between honoring her father’s dying wish and her unexplainable yearning for Lord Severian. But as Severian and Meridian work together to protect a relic hunted by mortals and immortals alike, the red veil descends over them. This all-consuming attraction can drive immortals to the brink of madness. Will the existence of this powerful bond between a human and a vampire be enough to unite the immortal clans or is the red veil a scourge set on destroying any chance they might have of happiness?

BOOK REVIEW - Descent of Blood - The Red Veil Series, Prequel
Elizabeth Marx.

(From an ARC direct from the Author)

A `plague' on both your houses... York and Lancaster.

This is an incredible prequel to a new Vampire series by the very talented, Elizabeth Marx. Narrated by a Vampiric priest, known as Philabe - the keeper of historic records. This book is set amidst the gruesome horrors of the War of the Roses, in 1464. We follow the story of Lady Meridian Neville, as she narrowly escapes from March's men as they storm her home at Bywell Castle, Westmorland.

Her Father has been tortured and killed, and the only request that he bestowed upon his Daughter, is to retrieve a priceless relic that is buried underground, within a chapel, hidden within the deepest recesses of the keep.

When a second bombardment storms through her Castle, she comes face to face with a renowned Warrior, known as Severian Pearce, and his treaty of men. Fearing for her safety, and the disturbing connection she feels towards the man, she hastily releases an arrow, piercing the Warrior near his heart. A close call... as what Meri does not realise, is that Severian is in fact a Vampire, fighting his own war, in the battle for survival.

Meridian's blood holds no bouquet, and according to ancient scripts, makes her a rare commodity in deed, for her blood is pure and therefore her `human' lineage is the only one in existence that can join and take a Vampire lover. This prophecy has a name... The Red Veil.

As Severian embarks on his journey with Meridian in tow, with a promise to reunite her with her kin, it becomes apparent that the Red Veil beckons, and therefore it is inevitable that Meridian will soon be his. But Meri has other plans. She wishes to belong to the church, at Montparte.

With further `otherworldly' entities trailing their movements, Meri and Severian have no choice but to protect each other and guard the priceless trinket that she holds dearly within her cloak.

What I adored about this book is that it's given Vampires back that dark sinister edge. Many vampire related books these days portray them as heroes, but these boys are `old-school.' Ruthless and unforgiving. The war of the roses poses the perfect gruesome backdrop, and as much as I loved Severian, he is still a killer, a force to be reckoned with, and yet his love and obsession for Meri was heartfelt and commendable.

What I thought was a great addition was the narration. It reminded me of a movie in that way, ie 300. I liked Philabe, the keeper. I like the idea of the `vampire' watcher, recording the histories over the aging times and I look forward to his future documentations in the full length novel that is to follow.

Overall, truly excellent. Loved the plot, the backdrop, the narration, the characterisation, the hotter than hell `intimate' moments and the secondary otherworldly characters that could truly make this series a top contender! This book would also appeal to both genders.

Favourite passage:
Severian moved toward her, kneeling in front of her. His voice was pleading when he said, "When I return I mean to make you mine."
"Do not return here Milord." She tried to pull away but some pain she saw in his face kept her eyes locked on him. "I am for Montparte."
"You have my heart Meri and I will not settle for less than an equal measure of yours."

5 Worthy Stars.

This is not the kind of book I usually read but I have to say it was very good. The only thing that kept me from giving it five stars was the fact that there were far too many graphic sex scenes. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a prude but I have a VERY vivid imagination and I don't need the how shall I say this...gory details for lack of better words spelled out for me. I found the scenes gratuitous, the graphic nature of them unnecessary. I mean we're all adults here, we know what's going on. Other than that it's a very good book.

As I had no previous experience with Ms. Marx's writing, I began reading with no expectations other than to get into a good story. I am now certainly won over and will be looking for her works to add to my "read" list! The phrase that "war makes strange bedfellows.." is an apt one here as our heroine of the story, Meridian, in an attempt to protect the only precious thing in her home from the marauders, shoots an arrow through the heart of Severian Pearce, a vampire who comes into the castle with his guards. She is horrified that she may have killed him and he is smitten, finding an instantaneous soul connection to her! Instead of killing her, or worse, he returns to protect her and helps her escape from the castle and preserve the relic that has been in her family's possession for hundreds of years. The young innocent maiden and the elder, world-weary vampire become attached and invested in each other, to the end that he takes her home to "Mother." Their experiences along the way and their dynamic of evolving relationship were exciting and often frightening, but a very rewarding tale. I look forward to reading more in this story line and will be looking up her previous works as well.

--ARC recieved directly from Elizabeth Marx--

Oh, how I fell for Severian Pearce *swoon* the vampire prince who is rough around the edges, dangerous, feared, totally alpha, then falls for the beautiful and innocent, but strong Meridian, who is a mortal of course.

Although I did really enjoy this book, I was not hooked straight away. The beginning was kind of confusing to me because there are so many people, citites, and names of battles being thrown at you. I had a hard time following it, but once I just relaxed into the book and didn't think about it so much, I was able to focus on the main characters and the love story. The love story was absolutely wonderful, as soon as it began I was there, in my happy little romance bubble :)

It had plenty of intense moments--

"Severian's eyes moved from the rapid rise and fall of Meridian's chest to her eyes. "I believe I have decided on having your blood one way or another."
"Well, I never." Meridian stood so abruptly that the ewer overturned.
Severian caught her wrist as she tried to right the pottery. "No you have not, nor will you, with any other than me."

And sweet, tender moments--

"You are mine, Meri. Heart. Soul. Body."

There was plenty of conflict and challenges presented to Severian and Meri along the way and I can't wait to see what the rest of the series has in store for them and others in their story. Great read!

After reading Cutters vs Jocks and Binding Arbitration I became a huge fan of Elizabeth Marx. She just has a way of capturing her audience and pulling real emotions out of each one of us. When I read that she was writing a paranormal/vampire series I was really excited as I love this genre. She didn't disappoint!!!!!

The novella started out a little slow and I found myself a bit distracted but I think that is because a lot of books these days feel like they have to start with a bang and keep the hits coming the whole book through. Once I stopped looking for some big thing and let myself relax into the story I was hooked. After finishing the story I completely appreciate the slow build at the beginning because it laid the ground work and really worked to completely immerse me in the story and the new world unfolding before me. Elizabeth created a rich, complex new world that I think has the potential to be a really great new series and I love my vampire series! The only thing that kept it from being 5 stars for me was that I wanted more. More of the story of King Henry and things eluded to in the beginning, more of the background of Meridian and Severian and other characters we were introduced to but i think that will come in other books.

I can't wait for the next book!
