Un livre avec ce qu'il faut de technique, et des explications claires. L'influence de chaque composant est exposée avec netteté.
Cet ouvrage est unique dans son genre, car dédié à l'amplification guitare, là ou tous les ouvrages techniques sur les lampes sont plutôt orientés HiFi. Des notions de base sont nécessaires pour la compréhension(au moins connaitre la loi d'ohm) et également comprendre l'anglais...
Cet ouvrage est devenu mon livre de chevet... et d'atelier!

I have many books on tube amp and preamp design. From Reich's "Theory and Applications of Electron Tubes" 1940's EE text book, to hi-fi books published by Elektor to Richard Kuehnel's diatribes on the classic tube guitar amps.

This book smokes them ALL. It is so easy to read, and accessible to anyone with high-school math skills, and technician level electronics knowledge. If you can read an electronics schematic, know how to wire/solder and can make stuff, then you can very quickly and practically apply the work in this book with great results.

Biasing, Triode, Tetrode and Pentode operations are all well addressed, with practical graphical and analytical design techniques given, as well as clear, inarguable technically correct explanations of distortion, overdrive, harmonics, tone control and filtering.

I can say this because I am an EE, with many years experience designing and building audio electronics both for guitar and hi-fi, and I could not have written a book on this subject better myself.

This is AWESOME.

Blencowe's Preamp book is one of the very few exceptionally clear references available for valve preamp circuits. There's no math beyond high school algebra and his treatment of pentode gain stages is better than any other you'll find not written for electrical engineers. The book's title suggests it's only applicable to guitar amplifiers but that's not exactly true. Although the discussion centers on guitar amps Blencowe notes the difference between guitar and hi-fi applications throughout. While he does not emphasize minimizing distortion in gain stages (usually describing various types of distortion as desirable for guitar) he does clearly express the difference one would find in a similar hi-fi circuit.
To gain a preview of the book Google "valve wizard" (Merlin - valve wizard - get it?) - summaries of the major subjects are available there. As to spelling and grammar - an earlier reviewer might not understand that the author is British - he writes in British not American English.

I have a degree in EE, and took courses in networks, filter theory, transistor theory, signals and systems, electromagnetics, etc. Although I have these theories and methods tucked neatly away, in college you are instructed in a dry textbook format, with almost no instruction how to apply this knowledge in a practical way. Such knowledge comes from having a job and gaining experience.

I have mainly designed and build precision amplifier circuits for optical sensors using semiconductor op-amps. As I now approach retirement I recently became interested in the design of vacuum tube amplifiers for guitars. I'll start out by saying this is the finest book on tube amplifier design I've seen, and is a goldmine for electronic designers in general. First, the Author presents vacuum tube design and theory in a thorough and lucid way. I read a few other books before this one, and this book answers all of the lingering questions I had from the previous books. Then the Author presents specifically how tube guitar amplifiers are designed, what makes them sound the way they do, what the limitations are, etc. Then he goes on to provide a whole grab bag of tricks used by veteran designers in the old vintage amplifiers.

I'm ready to start designing and building my first valve amplifier, purely for the fun of it. This is the best book on the subject I have seen. It is easily worth the money regardless of your level of knowledge at the start. A textbook with 1/4 the information will cost you 4x more than this. He'll teach you everything you need to get started, and give you a real appreciation of how real EEs design stuff. And remember: "You can't spell Geek without a Double-E"

I have several "tube circuit" books from many of the current authors and a few from the golden years as well. Mr. Blencowe's book manages to deliver engineering level detail while not beating you over the head with it (or presuming you are an engineer). His ability to convey complex and somewhat obscure details to the lay person is among the best I have read putting him up there with Nelson Pass who in my opinion is unmatched at this skill. He also explains the math much more clearly than the usual cursory review providing a true fundamental understanding of what is going on. Furthermore the book covers a great deal of material so you don't feel as though you need more books to fill in the gaps. Well written, well laid out and a true must have for anyone serious about building or at least understanding how tube preamp circuits work.

This is an outstanding book for the intermediate to advanced amp builder who can understand basic Algebra. This book filled a niche because so many old textbooks and manuals emphasize HiFi and no distortion, or they are written so that you have to have an Engineering Degree to comprehend them. Then there's the other extreme of books with mods, picture books, and basic info for the beginner.

This book opened my eyes to many things that I looked at incorrectly, and I have over a 100 amp builds under my belt. It filled gaps in my knowledge that many who are self taught like me will have.

Now since reading this book I go back and read some of the more complex books like RDH4, or even more simpler info like Tube Receiving manuals with greater understanding as to how to use them, and make my own designs.

In a nut shell, this book ranks number 1, and I look forward to more by the author. I liked it so much, I bought my friend (who also builds amps) a copy
