Description de l'ouvrage

22 mai 2012
It is the beginning of the end . . . The end of the axe-age, the sword-age, leading to the passing of gods and men from the universe. As all the ancient prophecies fall into place, the final battle rages, on Earth, across Faerie, and into the land of the dead. Jack Churchill, Champion of Existence, must lead the Brothers and Sisters of Dragons in a last, desperate assault on the Fortress of the Enemy, to confront the ultimate incarnation of destruction: the Burning Man. It is humanity’s only chance to avert the coming extinction. At his back is an army of gods culled from the world’s great mythologies - Greek, Norse, Chinese, Aztec, and more. But will even that be enough? Driven to the brink by betrayal, sacrifice and death, his allies fear Jack may instead bring about the very devastation he is trying to prevent . . .

Revue de presse

"When he’s on form, there is no one writing today that can do urban, gritty magic as well as Mark Chadbourn, and this book is very much on form, in terms of its action, exciting storytelling, and sheer force."
-SF Site

"Chadbourn brings imagination to a rich tapestry he has already woven. . . . A very dynamic and visceral read with elements of nonlinearity and bendy timeline. Very enjoyable. . . . One of the best books in the series yet."
-SF Crowsnest

If you have traveled with the whole crew, you have the character you most identify with already in mind. Their strengths and weakness', loves and hates are pretty clearly defined for you already. If that is the case, you believe you can skip the prologue. I would recommend not skipping it. Even if you have read all the previous books there might be some connections you have missed. After all this is an epic that starts around 2500 BC and goes up to our present day and goes from our world to the lands of Summer and the world of the dead. Just a lot to try to keep up with. Luckily for us, Mark Chadbourn does an excellent job as guide for the entire trip. Like with life, even with all the challenges (both every day and heroic) that our adventurers face it turns out that even the small decisions have consequences, many of which are unforeseen (even if done with the best of intentions). In the end, it is a normal bloke to borrow a phrase) that makes the difference. This book is an excellent end to the series and continues to play with the timeless themes and philosophical questions. I came away feeling a little sad, as though I had been through a catharsis and also feeling very philosophical. © Night Owl Reviews

There is really no way this 9th book in the series can stand alone, you really need to have read at least the last three to understand the whole picture. There are so many threads, plots, betrayals and characters it's a complex but solid fantasy series.
It's come to the last battle, the last stand and with nothing to lose Jack Churchill and the other Brothers and Sisters of Dragons go all out. It's the culmination of a huge body of work, covering episodes from Celtic Britain to the present day and the otherworld of the Tuatha De Danann otherwise known as Faerie.
The exsistance of all life is threatened by the Void and the threat includes all worlds, in all planes of exsistance, even the land of the dead.
Right up to the last chapter I wasn't sure how this was going to play out. The characters are flawed and having doubts but you find yourself swept along and praying for someone to find some clever way for it all to work out.
It's clear Chadbourn has done a lot of research and the series was obviously a labour of love. It's huge and contains so many layers, so many cultures, so much history it's a feast for the fantasy fan. Gods, myths, magical swords, weak humans and cruel deigities, fears, tears, dry humour and sacrifice, it's all included.
I'm not usually a reader of series but the characters, research and pace of this Epic kept me reading and Epic is an appropriate label for this trilogy of trilogies, I envy anyone who is just discovering it.

Chadbourn ends his epic trilogy of trilogies with this book. Don't expect cute characters and pink unicorns. The good guys are average people thrown into a responsibility no one would want and the bad guys are really bad. Loved it, hate to see the story end...
