4.0 étoiles sur 5 There is a MORE CURRENT PRINTING of Difficulties in the Bible 13 mai 2006

Update 2011: This may be one of the earlier books in English that deal with supposed contradictions in the Bible; so don't expect it to be a huge book. When I found it used in the early 1980s, I was pretty excited about finding such a book. There are many larger-sized books now, but this is a great (and inexpensive) starter book on the subject.

Some people and reviewers don't like the insistence that difficulties within the Bible are caused by something other than an actual contradiction in a text, but intellectually and reasonably, that's a good place to start.

Note that many existing real contradictions come from inexact translations of a passage.

Always keep in mind that the original Bible was not in English, and that oftentimes a look at the "original" languages can answer some of the difficulties. And related to this, note that some difficulties come from differences in a particular Greek or Hebrew text that someone chose for a particular passage's translation. (A different text sometimes clears up difficulties.)

Btw, A more-current printing of Difficulties in the Bible, by the same publisher, has slightly larger print, and is a more-typical size for a Paperback.

Here are the Details for comparison:

Paperback: 219 pages
Publisher: Whitaker House; Updated edition (October 2003)
Language: English
ISBN: 0883688697
Product Dimensions: 8.2 x 5.3 x 0.6 inches

The one here:
Paperback: 189 pages
Publisher: Whitaker House (December 1996)
Language: English
ISBN: 0883683016
Product Dimensions: 6.9 x 4.2 x 0.6 inches

As an aside, this book is not intended to explain where the Bible came from, or to defend the Bible texts themselves, but to explain select passages in the Bible that have been thought to be contradictory. For explanations about such topics, search for books on the history and "canon" of the Scriptures/Bible, and about "apologetics" (defense of the faith).

If you're wondering how Cain got his wife, this book offers a proper explanation! The book is arranged in topics, very accessible.

I agree with some of the other reviews here that the author uses circular reasoning and also can be a bit condescending at times. There are also a few difficulties he tries to explain and ends up not explaining them at all, and at times its hard to follow the author. Didn't really get the idea that this book was written with alot of love in mind. I've actually never read a Christian book with a slight condescending vibe throughout and I'll admit its a surprising experience. Reminds me of some "Christian" blogs & forums where people are hammering their point how with little regard for love or how its coming across. I'm not saying the author is rude or always condescending, it just doesn't read like a Christian book in my view.

True, its an apologetics book of sorts, so perhaps "love" is not the focus, but the author clearly dismisses fundamentalist creation views and does not even bother to address key scriptural evidence for such positions. For example, the author believes in the Gap Theory as do many Christians, where supposedly millions or billions of years exist between Gen 1:1 and 1:2. He dismisses those believing in a literal 6 day creation week as not with the program and lacking in scientific understanding. On the way to this conclusion he never addresses that Genesis clearly defines the creation week as each "day" being the morning & the evening (24 hours) so acceptance of longer periods of time means you have to torture the scripture or disbelieve what is written.
Though I can tolerate a different view than mine (I have many friends with different views), it does not appear the author can and is dismissive towards opposing views. Here's a direct quote from CH 4: "the one who says this displays his ignorance of modern science".

The author also believes in a pre-Adamic race (pg 45), that God somehow created a race of people to live on the earth before Adam & Eve (this view is usually common with those to help explain long earth ages, jive with modern geology & evolutionary dates, etc). There is no scriptural evidence for this whatsoever, in fact there are NT passages that say Adam was the first created man. If Adam was the first man, there could be no pre-Adam races. The author even goes as far to say (pg 45) that "there is considerable reason to doubt that anything in Genesis 1, after Gen 1:1 relates to the original creation of the universe." !!! The author also quotes another source, though unnamed, stating that Charles Darwin was one of the greatest thinkers of the nineteenth century (pg. 44). Would a real Christian author mention this in a book defending the bible? Seriously!?

Lastly there is nothing in the book about the author, who he is, what his background is, not even anything about him/her on the back cover. I'm surprised Whitaker house, normally a respected publisher, would press this book. For someone looking for a book like this, I think there are better choices. Not trying to pick on the author, but I hate to see people misled because they take the book as fact from a "learned" source. I got mine used for $2.95 and I may have over-paid.

The wonderful R A Torrey explains everything in a clear, concise manner as he does in all his books. This one measured up as well as his others. Would that we had more Christian writers like Torrey around today. A great Christian man and a great Christian book!

I realise this book was written over a Century ago so perhaps I underestimated how much I would enjoy it :) Whilst Torrey's style probably wouldn't be that appropriate in the 21st Century, I found him very easy to read. I was quite surprised on how many "solutions" I agreed with him about - though I find his "TeeTotaller" views strongly influence his views on Alcohol use in Scripture. Also I didn't find his argument for Jesus being crucified on Wednesday as convincing as he seems to.

I would not encourage this as the place to start for Apologetics but a good source to compare your current Apologetics with. Plus a good insight to the thoughts of American Evangelicalism at the start of the 20th Century :)
