A dark, unpredictable love story that blows away conventional boundaries (K.A. Tucker)

Dirty, dangerous and utterly addictive (Totally Booked)

Présentation de l'éditeur

From the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today Bestselling author of The Pact, Love, in English and The Artists Trilogy, comes a dark romance about a good girl and a very, very bad man. It’s a deliciously twisted take on forbidden love, set among the drug cartels of hot, steamy Mexico and is not for the faint of heart. It contains explicit sex, violence, abuse, drug use, bad language and sexy Mexicans. You have been warned…

For Luisa Chavez, a twenty-three year old former beauty queen, a better life has always been just out of her reach. Sure, she’s had men at her feet since she was a young teenager but she’s never had the one thing she’s craved – security. Having grown up in near poverty, her waitressing job in Cabo San Lucas can barely let her take care of herself, let alone her ailing parents. Every day is another unwanted advance, every day is a struggle to survive.

When Salvador Reyes, the depraved leader of a major Mexican cartel, takes an interest in her, Luisa is presented with an opportunity she can’t afford to pass up. She’ll become Salvador’s wife and exchange her freedom and body for a life of riches – riches she can bestow upon her deserving parents. But Luisa quickly finds out that even the finest wines and jewels can’t undo the ugliness in her marriage, nor the never-ending violence that threatens her every move.

Soon, Luisa is looking for an escape, a way out of the carefully controlled life she’s leading. She finally gets her wish in the worst way possible.

As it is, being the wife of Salvador makes her an ideal target for rival cartels and there’s one particular man who needs Luisa as part of his cartel’s expansion. One particular man whose quest for power has destroyed lives, slit throats and gotten him out of an American prison. One particular man who will stop at nothing until he gets what he wants.

That man is Javier Bernal. And he wants Luisa. He wants to take her, keep her, ruin her.

Unless she ruins him first.

Some men were born to create empires, some women were meant to be queen.

**Dirty Angels is the first novel in the Dirty Angels Trilogy and is followed by Dirty Deeds and Dirty Promises. The character of Javier Bernal is from The Artists Trilogy, and while reading TAT is recommended if you want additional insight into this twisted character, it is not required.

Dirty Angels reading order:

#1 Dirty Angels
#2 Dirty Deeds
#3 Dirty Promises

I have discovered a new addiction...and she's called Karina Halle...no kidding it's bad. I have read three of her books over the last few weeks and there is no going back...this woman can write straight to my soul. To read at the end of this book that she wrote it while planning her freaking wedding and then edited ON HER HONEYMOON...who the hell does that?? One very passionate and dedicated storyteller..that's who!
I just read On Every Street yesterday so I would get a little back ground on who this Javier dude was and I am happy to report, he is alive and well a few years later, but has become a much more guarded and less impulsive man when it comes to love. When Javier and his posse kidnap Luisa, the sweet and rather innocent wife of a Mexican drug cartel leader and attempt to use her for a bargaining tool to expand their business, he gets way more than he bargained for...what should have been an easy trade turns into a journey of self discovery for both Javier and Luisa. Dangerous games are being played on both sides and the evil man Luisa was forced to marry reveals himself to be even more despicable than anyone ever thought...leaving Javier and his gang to make some very difficult choices.
I absolutely love how Karina Halle portrays her female characters...showing growth from innocent and frail submissives to powerful forces and strongly sexual beings. And her men...they range from seriously cringe inducing mega-dominant abusive pigs to swoon worthy, yet at times almost forcefully dominant alpha males...with a heart buried so deep in ice you need a blow torch to melt it away.
I loved the pace at which this twisted and suspenseful adventure moved along...there was just enough action and HOT steamy encounters to keep things very interesting. That ending was perfect and caused a bit of anxiety but overall very satisfying!

I highly recommend this one to romance readers who like some dark and thrilling action with their love stories...especially when those lovers happen to be very unconventional in their way of thinking.

FIVE PLUS STARS!! Dirty Angels by Karina Halle brings back Javier Bernal in this spin off of the The Artists Trilogy series. Just when you thought you knew this man, your perception will change. Enter Louisa Chavez, a young woman who gets pulled into a life of horror in order to give her parents a better life. She marries the leader of a major Mexican cartel and finds that life with this evil man is not what she expected. Her frantic attempt to escape the life she's entered only ends up in her being kidnapped by a rival cartel, run by Javier Bernal. From there, things get dicey.

Once again, Karina Halle has outdone herself. Her characters come to life and keep pulling you into the story. This story can be read as a standalone, however, reading The Artists Trilogy first can give you better insight into why Javier is the way he is. But read it, because it is worth every single minute of your time!

I was really mad at Karina Halle after reading the Sins and Needles trilogy. She made me fall hard for Javier Bernal in those books and then she snatched away my hopes and dreams of Javier's happy ending. I felt so unresolved after that series... wondering why on earth this author would introduce us to such an enigmatic, charming psychopath only to refuse him the girl, deny his redemption, deny the reader his resolution. I get it now.

Javier did some incredibly despicable things in On Every Street... things that many readers could not get past. I am a reader that loves a jerk... loves a character who seems unforgivable, irredeemable, who seriously surpasses the line of "yes, he can come back from this" by miles and miles... but yet he eventually finds his way. So when Javier never redeemed himself in the Sins books, in many ways he only got worse as time went on through that series, I was really just dumbfounded. I couldn't understand how we never found peace with his character. Looking back, I can appreciate what Karina Halle did with Javier. I waited for him to show remorse, show he held some goodness in his soul. Cliché as it may be, I expected that the light would prevail. Karina Halle didn't give that to me, because that was not Javier. Javier was not remorseful, he wasn't good. She didn't absolve him of his sins because he wasn't seeking redemption. She stayed true to his character... I just didn't know it until now.

"It's not easy to have confidence in who you are, to say #@$% it, the world thinks I am a monster because I am a monster. And I don't care."

Told in alternating first person points of view, we are brought directly into the mind of the madman, as well as getting the painful first-hand perspective of Luisa, the wife of rival cartel leader, Salvador Reyes. Readers left searching for some understanding into Javier's darkness will find that in this book. Every question you have, and so many you never thought to ask, are answered. That doesn't mean Javier has found the light and is suddenly the absolved hero we're been seeking. I understand him more, maybe even empathize with him to an extent. But at the end of the day, this is still Javier Bernal. He still angers me, frustrates me, seem impenetrable, soulless much of the time. He's still a Mexican caveman, wanting to serve up a decapitated head on a stick to prove he kept a promise. He's a lot of things, things we expected and things we never saw coming. And he just may have found his match.

"Perhaps it was because I was so beyond saving. Either way, she saw who I was and all my filth and she wanted to roll around in it with me."

Readers easily affected by sensitive subjects should heed the author's warning in the blurb. This story is dark. The level of brutality, depravity, torture, evil in this story is sometimes nauseating, impossible to wrap my mind around. With that said, it's likely that the depths of the violence and cruelty depicted in this story are completely authentic considering the vast amount of research conducted by this author. There are no rainbows and puppies within the Mexican drug cartel. There is only the battle for who is worse, who is more evil, whose soul is darker. For many readers, Javier was the worst of the worst. Turns out, he's not.

"To live and die in Mexico," he said, getting to his feet. "That is the way."

The dynamic between Javier and Luisa is a hostile, painful, fragile one. The level of distrust between the two makes for exorbitant amounts of sexual tension, intense dialogue and a completely unpredictable plot. What Luisa has been through her entire life and continues to deal with in Javier's custody is beyond comprehension. But she is strong. She survives. She fights. She's my favorite kind of heroine, because she's the kind we rarely see. My heart hurt throughout this book... watching them deny their mutual attraction because the laws of the cartel make it impossible for them to succumb to it, seeing him hurt her both physically and emotionally because the rules say he must... feeling his shame, her hopelessness, his internal struggle, her resignation. This entire story had my stomach in knots, my heart in my throat, and tears in my eyes.

"Because I want to destroy beautiful things before they can destroy me."

I'm not sure what it says about me as a reader that Dirty Angels is my very favorite kind of story. The kind of story where the hero is not a hero at all. He's a heartless, irredeemable bastard who goes so far over the edge into his treachery and villainy, it's unlikely he can ever come back from it. The kind where the heroine exists in a life of such desperation and ugliness, that all the choices she makes for her life consist of deciding what is, literally, the lesser of two evils. The unpredictable kind, the kind where this constant feeling of foreboding exists, leaving the reader wondering until the very last page how this can possibly end well for anyone. Karina Halle once again blows my mind with her superb writing and story telling. The dialogue in this book is perfection. Her beautiful prose in such a dark, ugly story is the perfect demonstration of her remarkable talent. This is, in my opinion, Karina Halle's best writing to date... which should speak volumes considering how phenomenal her writing has always been.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Deliciously Wicked and Sexy!! A MUST READ! 15 juin 2014

"I have a lot of respect for beautiful things, you know. They are usually the most dangerous."

The last time I read about Javier was in the The Artists Trilogy and I thought I loved him then. I was wrong, SO wrong. I love him more than I thought I would, he fits into this story so remarkably well, and he is everything that his character needs him to be if that makes any sense at all... This is such a sexy, dirty, filthy story filled with intrigue, danger, lust and some really hot dark stuff that normally would make me cringe, but instead I found myself captivated by the odd beauty behind it. I love every part of this book, and could not put it down!

This story grabbed me from the very beginning, Luisa is in a very precarious and dangerous situation and wants more than anything to be able to feel love and have a shot at a normal life and her loyalty to her parents and her desire to take care of them is the most important thing in her life. She is truly an unselfish person and makes her choices based on need rather than want. I was drawn to her character the whole time and truly pulled for her to evolve throughout the story, it was the most tragic and beautiful thing to see unfold throughout the pages and I was addicted.

When Luisa and Javier's worlds come together it is such an unorthodox relationship and experience. Javier needs certain things from Luisa in order to keep his job and life afloat, and even though Luisa is still living under the scrutiny of her kept life she needs certain things from Javier. These two have some of the most unique and sexy chemistry that I've ever read. The way that Javier is so ruthless and evil at times doesn't take away from the fact that he is hot as hell. His mouth is dirty and filthy and I just loved the way he spoke, not only Luisa but everyone. He held command in his voice and it was so deviously sexy you wouldn't know to run to him or run for the hills.

This story has some crazy twists and turns that I didn't see coming, and to be honest writing a non-spoiler review is normally easy for me! But not today, there is so much wickedly good stuff that goes on in this book and I'm just dying to vomit my words all over this page, but I won't. I will say this; Javier did some things both good and bad that just blew my mind! He is hands down one of my favorite book people. So awesome.

Karina's writing is stellar, and witty and smart and left me glued to each page, and her character development and growth are beyond wonderful. There are some side characters that I love as well. Not because they are some great lovely people, but because I actually found myself changing my mind about them which doesn't happen very often. In the end this was an AMAZING read that I would recommend to everyone just based on the fact that it was so beautifully different. I know I keep saying how sexy it is, and I hate to repeat myself but HOLY CRAP it's seriously one of the sexiest books out there, and that's not just from the sex! Words are sexy, hands are sexy, items are sexy! I'm not sure how one turns violence, crime, guns, drugs, and some despicable characters into a hot sexy, deviant, and romantic thriller all at one time but Karina did it WELL, and by the time I reached the last page, I actually said WOW out loud to myself. I won't forget this one for a while.

"I was reacting to the fact that I would never win. No matter what I did. I was reacting to the unfairness of it all, of my very existence."

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Yes, Javier stole my heart. 17 juin 2014
Par Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews - Publié sur Amazon.com

So, after all the warnings, I was mentally prepared for a dark, erotic, novel filled with drugs, sex and blood. I wasn’t disappointed … but … I was surprised. Surprised that I would fall in love with Javier Bernal, rooting for a drug lord to win the woman. Surprised that I would cheer when Luisa came into her own and shot to kill. Surprised that the book had an HEA that actually left me with a smirk on my face and wondering what the hell Este was going to do now.

Yes, Javier stole my heart. He was a hard man. He was a dirty man. He was a hardened man running from his past by building a Drug Cartel to rival that of the biggest Drug Lord in Mexico, Salvadore Reyes. He never bargained for the innocent Luisa to get under his skin. No, he won’t use the word love ever again but his hand is really getting boring and Luisa is drawing him in. One taste is all it took for him to crumble.

Luisa was a beauty queen. Born into a poor family … a blind mother and a father who developed Alzheimer’s, her dreams of going off to college were crushed. Making ends meet and making a life for her parents were now her goals in life. Until Salvador Reyes came along and promised her more than she could have ever hoped for. Until the wedding night …. until she was taken away and used, abused, passed around – the word “no” was not in Salvador Reyes’ vocabulary. She had to find a way out and to get her parents to safety. There was nothing that Salvador Reyes wouldn’t do – including killing her parents and her for the betrayal.

A kidnapping, a carving, an attempted rape, betrayal and, finally, a coming together of two like souls keeps you sitting on the edge of your seat just waiting to see how everything was going to resolve itself. How were her parents going to be safe? How was she going to withstand being away from Javier and deal with the abuse from Salvador again? How was Javier going to keep his Cartel together without killing Luisa as he said he would?

A strong book filled with amazing main characters and interesting supporting characters; a story line that has you breathlessly turning the pages to see what they will do next – which Javier will be there – which Luisa will show up. Is it dark? Yes. Is it erotic? Yes. Was there blood? Yes – with knife play that was very intriguing. It is not a book for the weak of heart or for people who may be squeamish about rough sex, torture or murder. Believe it or not, Dirty Angels was actually a love story that showed us that a King would do whatever it took to bring his Queen to the throne.
