Présentation de l'éditeur

Ottawa Homicide Inspector Michael Green is absolutely obsessed with his job, a condition which has almost ruined his marriage several times. When the biggest case of his career comes up, his position, his relationships and several lives are put into grave danger. A young graduate student and scion of a rich family is found expertly stabbed in the stacks of a university library, but no one seems to have the slightest idea why. But as Green probes into the circumstances of the young man’s life, a tangled web of jealousy and intrigue is revealed. Green finds himself in the middle of a rivalry in the delicate arena of university politics, where gigantic egos regularly collide. Was it the diligent but socially inept researcher, or the macho ladies-man golden boy of the laboratory? Or was it a crime of passion involving the over-protective family of his beautiful new girlfriend? When the murderer strikes again, Green realizes that he must waste no time in solving the case, no matter what the consequences may be.

Barbara Fradkin has a winner in her first mystery novel, DO OR DIE. Confronting a bloody opening scene contaminated by bungling, Inspector Michael Green presents a tightly-strung, self-doubting sleuth as he juggles a shaky second marriage, a working wife, and a newborn. Political power struggles are the next barrier in his effort to discover why Jonathan Blair, a young graduate student, was found stabbed to death in the quiet stacks of the university library. An innocent victim in the wrong place at the wrong time? Or a calculated homicide? Evidence seems too scarce for an amateur. An eminently likable man with few enemies, Blair had been involved in ground-breaking neuropsychology. His path had crossed a viper's den of ambitious colleagues led by an arrogant professor with a world-class reputation. In addition to a girlfriend with a grudge, Green must track a Lebanese girl protected by her concerned family. Against the rich tapestry of Canada's multiculturalism (Green has a long-neglected Jewish heritage), the staid city of Ottawa reveal its gritty underbelly and its upscale suburbs. Assisted by the blunt but capable Sgt. Sullivan, Green battles personal demons to bring the culprit to justice. Fradkin paints with deft strokes, dropping fair clues to tempt the reader, then making him sweat for the solution. A sure-footed knowledge of forensics makes this a solid police procedural as well as a taut thriller.

This is the first Fradkin book I've read and I plan to read more. Once I became involved in the story--it took about 30 pages--I read it in two days. The last evening, I actually stayed up until 1:00 a.m. and read 100 pages straight through. I thought the case was well laid out, the characters fleshed out. I actually don't like the main character, Green, very much. He is self-centred and selfish. Still, I don't consider that key and he may improve with further books. He seemed, at the end of the book, that there were possibilities. But, in this particular book, the story was more important. I know Ottawa and I know universities and university politics. I think Fradkin did an excellent job describing both. There were a couple of loose threads that made no sense--why WAS the second victim naked was one that I was left with. I think, though, that Fradkin did an excellent job concealing the murderer's identity. I had my suspicions about one character who ended up being murdered halfway through. The mark of a good mystery :) I do wish the language was a little less coarse but that is probably real life. All in all, a good read as a mystery/police procedural.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 "Hey, Mike, go home!" 17 février 2003
Par Kevin Nelson - Publié sur
Inspector Michael Green of the Ottawa Police Force came close to provoking me to shout at him to go home. I needed the rest, too. Recently married with a new baby, he just wouldn't leave the case alone. This drove his partner and wife to distraction. Yet, this doggedness results in the crime being solved. This is a wonderful debut novel. The characters are complex, the mystery seems baffling and the suspects are plentiful. The plot does chase some red herrings, which is fair, but there is none of the often found solutions in new mysteries - the detective learns something that we, the reader does not. That is unfair. Fortunately, this is not the case in this mystery. The clues are laid out for us, just as Insp. Green gets them. Well done.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A tangled web of jealousy and intrigue 14 février 2001

A young graduate student and member of a very wealthy family is found expertly stabbed to death in the stacks of a university library. Homicide Inspector Michael Green is so dedicated to his job that it's come close to ruining his marriage on more than one occasion. Now he is caught up in the biggest case of his career and compelled to put his law enforcement career, his family, and friends in peril as he probes into the circumstances of the young man's life to uncover a tangled web of jealousy and intrigue. Do Or Die is a stunningly well written novel set amidst a scenario of university politics, passion, and murder.

I enjoyed this book a lot. There are lots of twists and turns for the unwary reader to get off on the wrong foot thinking they know who did it. The relationships are well done and vivid. There is no graphic sex or violence and it was a greatly enjoyable read.
