Présentation de l'éditeur

Many people know about William Shakespeare’s famous encounter with the Doctor at the Globe Theatre in 1599. But what few people know (though many have suspected) is that it was not the first time they met.

Drawn from recently-discovered archives, The Shakespeare Notebooks is the holy grail of Bard scholars: conclusive proof that the Doctor not only appeared throughout Shakespeare’s life, but had a significant impact on his writing. In these pages you’ll find early drafts of scenes and notes for characters that never appeared in the plays; discarded lines of dialogue and sonnets; never-before-seen journal entries; and much more.

From the original notes for Hamlet (with a very different appearance by the ghost) and revealing early versions of the faeries of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, to strange stage directions revised to remove references to a mysterious blue box, The Shakespeare Notebooks is an astonishing document that offers a unique insight into the mind of one of history’s most respected and admired figures. And also, of course, William Shakespeare.

This is probably not best devoured in short order, but should be dipped into. You will need to know your Shakespeare - I mean, we even end up in an odd corner of Cymbeline. The Sontarans as the rude mechanicals are worth the cost alone, though how the Doctor helped out with Shakespeare's last play is suitably mind-bogglingly timey-wimey.

Such a disappointment, considering how well written the scripts were for the TV series! This is dull stuff and does not appeal to me either as a fan of Shakespeare or of The Doctor. Boring, trite, sophomoric, weak, and just not worth the money or the time to read it. Seems like it was written just to cash in on Dr. Who fans' willingness to buy anything related to the show. Ugh!!

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Clever, but some bits are better than others, and it's more a book to be sipped than gulped 23 décembre 2014

'Doctor Who: The Shakespeare Notebooks' is not so much a book as a series of fragments. Some of it works better than others.

The Doctor (of Doctor Who) fame, has visited Shakespeare during the course of the TV series, and maybe at other times not documented. This book takes some famous Shakespeare works and shows how the Doctor and his companions might have interfered. We get snippets from Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet. There are parts of sonnets and unwritten plays. Throughout there is the strange Doctor interjecting strange things. The volume ends with a short story with the tenth Doctor and Donna Noble involving a bed owned by Shakespeare.

Some of the gags are more clever than others. Sometimes it's easy to tell which Doctor it is, and sometimes less so, but that's not a problem. It's more a book to dip into than to read straight through. Since I'm a Doctor Whoo fan, I enjoyed it for the most part, but I'm not sure if I'd recommend it.

I received a review copy of this ebook from Random House UK, Ebury Publishing, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great Book For a Specific Audience 22 janvier 2015

This is a really neat book, though it is definitely designed for a very specific audience. Basically, the book takes parts of Shakespeare's plays, and re-writes them to include characters from Dr. Who. This includes characters from both the new and the classic Dr.Who series, and it is written in Shakespeare's style. With this in mind, it is an awesome book and makes a great gift for anyone who is a true fan of both Dr. Who and Shakespeare.

The book is hardcover, the binding is tight and clean. Shipping was fast. A good buy, but only for true fans.

I enjoyed this collection, which is well and creatively written. It's fun to explore the Doctor's experiences and history with the Bard, and each Doctor's "voice" is well captured.
