5.0 étoiles sur 5 One of the Best YA Thrillers I've Read!! 5 juin 2014
Par Stephanie Ward - Publié sur
'Don't Look Back' is a taut and completely gripping young adult thriller that had me hooked from the very beginning. I am a huge fan of this genre and I really can never find enough books that leave an impression on me. This one did just that - and then some. Everything about this novel - from the plot and characters to the writing style and the setting - was perfect. The characters were well written and easy to identify with - especially our main character Samantha. She was a fantastic leading lady - smart, determined, and brave - yet she still had her flaws, which I believe made her all the more realistic. The other characters in the book were well rounded too, which made slipping into the story alongside Sam even easier.

The plot was full of unexpected twists and turns - ones that you definitely don't see coming and then are left with your mouth hanging open in surprise. With this genre, I love trying to piece together the mystery and figure things out before the main character does, but I have to admit that I failed to do that when it came to this book. That alone is enough to impress me and shows the amount of talent the author has. Add to that the depth of the story line - there's so much more going on than you think - and you have one of the best YA thrillers I've read in a very long time. The descriptions were incredibly detailed with vivid imagery and a fast pace - all of which came together to create a truly compelling novel. I honestly can't say enough good things about this book to do it justice, so I'll simply end by saying that this was one wicked thrill ride that will leave you devouring the pages to find out what happens. I very highly recommend this for fans of mystery, thrillers, and suspense fiction!!

Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

For me it was an ok read. I think YA readers would probably really like this book, especially because Sam, the main character, is a teenager who having lost her memories has to confront who her past and her relationships and grow from there. The writing was fine and I was able to finish it in a few hours. I like this author and while this book wasnt book wasn't one of my favorites it wasn't bad either so three stars ;)

Don’t Look Back by Jennifer Armentrout is a quick don’t put me down kind of read! I enjoyed this book and breezed through it. A whodunnit suspenseful story with EVERYONE being a suspect. Samantha, called Sammy or Sam or Insanity Sam, is found wondering around with complete amnesia. Her best friend, Cassie is also missing. Samantha starts learning about herself, and she doesn’t really love what she is discovering. She has a wonderful boyfriend who she doesn’t feel a connection with, an old friend who she does feel one with, and unsettling memories or possible hallucinations leaking through. Sam is working hard to find out what happened to her, and she grapples with the question of whether she wants to become the girl she was before or stay true to her current inner feelings and maybe have a nicer future.

The nature vs. nurture element in Don’t Look Back is my favorite element of this story. If you had complete amnesia and were able to start over tabla rasa, what changes would you make? Would you again bow to pressure to conform, or would you allow your inner self to flourish. In this story, Sam is a good girl who acted mean because of outside pressures. After a trauma, everyone goes through a period of soul searching. Sam is able to do this without any obligations, anger and pressures from the past bubbling up due to her amnesia. Except for a possible killer who doesn’t want her to remember anything, she is desperately trying to figure out why she acted the way she did. This recreation of her own past is an interesting journey.

Don’t Look Back is a fun read. The characters, places and events are all pretty real feeling. It is a little over the top with the stratification of the classes, rich vs. poor. But this is absolutely not something I have encountered in my middle class suburbia so it may be absolutely true. It is nice reading about the 1%, anyway. It is also nice to think that we are basically good inside, and outside pressure is what brings out the worst in us, even murder. As Sam felt nothing for the missing girl Cassie, I too felt nothing towards her except sadness for her family. Sam’s boyfriend Del, or Del the Dick, is also a conundrum. He seemed to be working so hard to make their relationship work, and it just never made sense. Feeling an instinctual passion for someone, like Sam does for Carson, is a gift and I am glad she appreciated him and his hotness. The good people are angelic in this story (poor), and the bad ones are evil (rich). There is not much variety, but for a one-off story it is cleaner. The “wow!” moment was good, and only slightly foreshadowed. Overall, give it a go! Reading prom stories makes me nostalgic and a little dreamy, hopefully you feel the same. I would also call this a girls book. Sorry guys!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great romantic suspense debut from JLA 17 avril 2014

I am a huge Jennifer Armentrout fan, and ever since I heard she was writing a suspense book I was dying to get my hands on it. Not surprisingly, I absolutely loved Don't Look Back. It was different from JLA's other books but in a great way. I thoroughly enjoyed how the suspense built up through the book, and that the sweet romance between Samantha and Carson took a back burner to the mystery. From the first page to the last I was hooked and couldn't wait to find out what had happened to Samantha.

I can't imagine being missing for four days and having no memory of what happened or where your best friend was. To make matters even worse, Samantha also found out that was she an awful person in her past life. My heart went out to her, completely lost in her own life and then discovering that she did not like the person she was or the choices she had made. She didn't know who to trust or what to believe. I was impressed with her tenacity for finding out the truth and the decisions she made regarding the life she truly wanted to live.

I loved Carson. He was so kind and patient with Sam even though she had been very unkind to him in the past. I just loved them together and how supportive and reassuring he was when Sam felt like she was going crazy. Their romance was such a sweet, slow-burning one, and I liked that it was actually secondary to Sam finding the answers she needed. Sam's brother Scott and his girlfriend Julie were also great characters. They were such a contrast to Sam's boyfriend and nasty group of friends, all of whom I wanted to smack.

The pacing of this book was perfect, and as I got closer to the end I was furiously flipping the pages and trying to figure out the truth. I managed to figure it out right before the big reveal, but it was a wild ride getting there. My head was spinning and then all of the sudden it clicked and everything fit together perfectly in my head. I loved how it all came together and I was able to look back and see all the clues that were dropped along the way. JLA definitely nailed her debut in the suspense genre, and I would love to see more books like this one from her in the future

5.0 étoiles sur 5 AMAZING BOOK BY A FANTASTIC AUTHOR!!!!!!! 3 octobre 2014

JLA is just perfect. She has done it again! Another perfect book written by her!!

Samantha can’t remember a single thing about her past. She can’t remember anything at all. She wakes up to people who are her parents, but has no clue who they are. Her best friend Cassie is missing and could possibly be dead somewhere. Samantha was the last person to see Cassie that night before she disappeared but Sam can’t remember anything.

As time ticks on, memories start to pop up but nothing concrete; just flashes. Is getting her memory back really important? Does she want to go back to being the rude and popular girl? What are the people hiding that they don’t want Sam to know?

This book was fantastic from beginning to end. The suspense and mystery was fantastic! You think you know who did what when it turns out you may be wrong. I thought I knew who, but I was wrong. I was COMPLETELY shocked. This book was fantastic. A lot of people that have read this already knew who it was but I didn’t. I had my mind set on a different character and I really did think it was that character, but I was totally not expecting that character!!!

I’m getting tired of love triangles, but JLA did this one perfectly! Sam had a boyfriend previous to loosing her memory. But since her memories are gone, she doesn’t remember anything, including her boyfriend. She sees Carson (who used to be her best friend) and thinks that’s her boyfriend. PERFECT triangle; done perfectly!

Carson was amazing, I love that boy now. Every male character she writes, ends up on my top book boyfriends list! Sam and Carson’s relationship was just so cute. So perfect. Jennifer L. Armentrout is perfect at writing romances- that’s definitely her strong part. Every romance I’ve read have been absolutely amazing! She never fails with the romance! To top off the amazing romance, the suspense and mystery of the book was just -awe- perfection.

Let’s put it this way- if your a fan of Pretty Little Liars/The Lying Game/Mean Girls, then this is absolutely PERFECT for you! It’s those 3 combined basically. :)
