Snortlicious 5 mars 1999

First of all, any book about Snortsnoots, by default, has to be good. And of course this is no exception. Continuing the long tradition of Snortsnoot tales, Kent has woven magic. My favorite picture is when the Snortsnoot is salt and peppering his victim. My second favorite is the Snortsnoot's blank and shocked stare when Dooly finds his strength. Every child should have this read to them or they miss out on something wonderful.

MY Dooly 19 mars 2009
Par A. Gentle - Publié sur Amazon.com
When it came time for Mom to divide up the children's books among the five of us, each one asked for Dooly and the Snortsnoot. Over several years, she tracked down four additional copies so that we could each have one. (Thanks, Mom!) This is our favorite children's book of all time. I think every child identifies with the undersized and underappreciated child with the giant-sized heart. Dooly knows he is small but when his playmates are threatened by the child-eating monster, he stops running away and makes a decision to face the fearsome, snarly, Snortsnoot. Personal coaches will tell you "if you want to be confident, act confident." Dooly figured that out without the self-help section. He may have been small, but he acted like a giant, and the book shows very well what can happen when you act big. As a bonus, he accepts his hero worship with a shrug, "I guess I just grew because it was time to."

This was one of my children's favorite books -- and one of the books I liked most to read to them. It is a terrific story about what some encouragement and self-confidence will do for a child. Highly, highly recommended!

Dooly and the Snortsnoot
Jack Kent ~ G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1972

Dooly & the Snortsnoot is a children's book, that was usually bedtime reading at our house when I was younger and now I read it to my kids. As a child, I thought the book was just a great story. When I started babysitting and later as a substitute teacher, I would read it to the children as a great way to pass the time. With each subsequent reading I began to appreciate the lessons and was reminded that no matter how afraid you might be, if you stop, turn around, and face your fear you will be bigger for it.

The book covers Dooly's transformation from a small giant to a big one. We are introduced to young giant who is indistinguishable in size from the regular village children. Even though he is not the size of his parents and doesn't look like a giant, he continues to practice being a giant. (The underlying theory is saying FEE FI FO FUM and scaring people is being a giant.)

He is invited into the social circle of the village children by Treena. They accept him and his assertion that he is a giant. They encourage him in his practice of giant-ism and they allow him to participate in their village recreation.

One day while they're playing their village children games, a snarly snortsnoot threatens their peace. Dooly runs with the village children as they try to escape. Treena is caught by the snortsnoot and her life is threatened. At that point Dooly stops running with the crowd, turns around and faces the snortsnoot despite how afraid he is. The more he stands up to snortsnoot, the bigger Dooly gets until it becomes quite obvious that he is a giant. The snortsnoot runs away in fear and is never heard from again.

In the book everyone speculates about what made Dooly finally grow up to be a giant. His mother suspects it was his vegetables, his father posits it was facing his fear and Dooly modestly says that is it was just time for him to grow.

The lessons that I take from this story grow the more I read it.

Face your fears
Everything that needs to happen will in good time
Encourage one another in your pursuits
Don't run with the crowd
Eat your vegetables
All are wonderful lessons for young children and adults alike.

Dooly and the Snortsnoot tells the story of young Dooly and his adventures with the village children. Dooly overcomes his doubts and comes to terms with his snortsnoot dilemma. It was a fine play, indeed.
