Présentation de l'éditeur

Bentley Loft Classics Books is proud to present Dracula by Bram Stoker with Annotations and Active Table of Contents:

Dracula is an 1897 novel by Irish author Bram Stoker.

Famous for introducing the character of the vampire Count Dracula, the novel tells the story of Dracula's attempt to relocate from Transylvania to England, and the battle between Dracula and a small group of men and women led by Professor Abraham van Helsing.

Dracula has been assigned to many literary genres including vampire literature, horror fiction, the gothic novel and invasion literature. The novel touches on themes such as the role of women in Victorian culture, sexual conventions, immigration, colonialism, and post-colonialism. Although Stoker did not invent the vampire, he defined its modern form, and the novel has spawned numerous theatrical, film and television interpretations.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent - review of ANNOTATED edition 7 mai 2012

Just a quick review since there are no others available for this, the ANNOTATED edition of Dracula by Bram Stoker.

I won't review the book itself, beyond saying that it is much better than I had expected - to me, Dracula has been so parodied, copied and overdone, it seemed like nothing more than a cliche. But, having had to read it for my book club, I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the experience - but best enjoyed if you can put aside all your preconceptions about "Dracula."

As to the edition: it is excellent, fully meeting my needs for a fully annotated edition. This work is from the Victorian age in Britain, and so many of the references and allusions are simply lost on 21st-centure Americans. This edition remedies that problem, and explains (in notes that are links, but that you can ignore if you prefer) just about everything that I would have wondered about otherwise. If, like me, you enjoy reading, for example, the beautiful penguin editions of classical literature for their extensive annotations, you will probably be fully satisfied with this edition. I would only mention that there are a few, minor, typos that careful edition could have caught, but nothing that really detracts from the reading experience. My thanks to the editors of this edition.

I liked this book a lot more than I expected. I became absorbed in its distant world and would think about it all day until opening it again on the train coming home from work each day. The story alternates between scenes of good and light and landscapes of darkness and evil and back again leading the reader to sympathize with the protagonists in their unalterable cause to destroy a Dracula who is so much more the embodiment of fear and evil than the silly characters seen on TV and in movies. As the main and most interesting protagonist, Van Helsing is an equal counterweight to the character of Dracula giving the story a good balance and the reader a glimmer of hope for an outcome that will reward the characters for their exhaustive efforts and the reader with a sense of relief.

I found it hard to understand the old way of speaking but after a chapter I am fine. I do need the index in the back of the book to explain some of the terms or names of locations that are no longer used. I can't put it down some nights!

It's the original therefore it deserves 5 stars! Getting the audio version was even better. My daughter had to read it for school so she read along while the audio played in the car on vacation.
