HASH(0x9500acb4) étoiles sur 5 I only wish there were more pages... 23 mai 2011

This book was originally written in 1947. It is only about 48 pages long. I feel I should say that up front, because people who purchase this book may look at its length and think they've been ripped off, but you would be sorely mistaken. This author's way of explaining fabric and how it moves was simple and easy to understand. It's filled with practical examples that give you a solid, practical knowledge. It's not filled with a bunch of pictures of the author trying to show off how good an artist he/she is. It looks dated in what they're wearing, but fabric today bunches and folds just like fabric in 1947. I take this book whenever I take my drawing pad somewhere.

He basically breaks it down into how the body supports garments and what happens when you move. Fabric does pretty much two things --it pulls and it bunches. Drawing fabric boils down to understanding where it's going to do either. I haven't seen a better presentation of that information. You can spend 3x as much and not get as good of an explanation that you get in this simple book.

HASH(0x9500bb88) étoiles sur 5 Straightforward, clear guidance 30 août 2011

Of the many "how to" art books on my shelf, this little gem is my favorite. The concepts of clothing on the human figure are presented in a simple manner with clear illustrations making every point the author discusses. As a visual learner (as many artists are!) it doesn't get better than this. MANY illustrations, and few words. Exactly as it should be in an art instruction book. A potentially complicated topic has been presented in a simple, understandable, and usable way.
As the other reviewer states, the clothing itself is dated, but the concepts are timeless. I plan to use this book as a guide in my own work as an professional artist, and in teaching my young students as well.

HASH(0x9544db50) étoiles sur 5 A rather simple approach 15 septembre 2012

It's an OK book. An easy read at only 48 pages which are mostly pictures. The pictures are clear, using different colors to denote the underlying figure and the cloth from each other. Rather than going into types of wrinkles and folds like some other books on the subject, it's broken down into particular types of clothing ie. the sweater, the jacket, the trousers, the skirt etc. Very limited in it's scope to clothing of the time period it was written, when much of the cloth used was of a similar firm type fabric. So it won't help much in terms of drawing period pieces that may include togas or other longer flowing fabrics or even thicker fabrics like leather. Considering the lack of books on this particular subject it's not a bad book to have around for quick sketches, but probably not something I'll refer to if working on something highly realistic or detailed.

Although the illustrations are from an earlier time, forces like gravity do not change with fashions. This small book has helped me more than big, fat, wordy ones!
