Revue de presse

"Flooded civilisations have long been a staple of post-apocalyptic fiction. Few have executed their dystopian vision with quite as much panache as Robbie Morrison and Jim Murray do here." (Stephen Jewell SFX)

"Jim Murray's gorgeous art is reminiscent in style of a toned-down Simon Bisley, and his attention to detail really brings this grimy, waterlogged world to life." (Henry Northmore The List)

"It's not the first time noir has been merged with science fiction, but the execution is absolutely first class. Murray's illustration is simply stunning. [Morrison's] script is razor-sharp. Together, Morrison and Murray have created a wonderful piece of cross-genre fiction, an homage to both noir and sci-fi, honing it down to a gritty but beautiful piece of work." (Andy Shaw Grovel)

"Morrison quickly fleshes out characters and plot with aplomb while Murray's gorgeous art ensures this is a thrilling no-holds barred adventure from start to finish..." (John Freeman Down the Tubes)

"A super read. Drowntown reaches high and achieves much of it, comedy, adventure, intrigue, entertainment and sumptuous art - I think you'll be hard-pressed to find anything else quite like it for a while." (Forbidden Planet)

Présentation de l'éditeur

‘Just had a romantic Waterloo sunset spoiled by the sight of a corpse being dredged from the Thames? Welcome to Drowntown…

‘The name's Noiret, Leo Noiret. I'm a Minder, which means people hire me to protect them, figuring that my beer belly and monumental streak of bad luck are big enough to intercept any blades, bullets or bad feelings heading their way.

‘Staying alive isn’t easy, though, when everyone who’s anyone in Drowntown wants your new client dead in the water. I’m going to need a bigger belly…’

The world has changed forever, ravaged by climatic upheaval. The flooded metropolis of London has adapted to the rising sea levels, remaining a centre for international commerce and a magnet for environmental refugees. The elite gaze out over the ever-expanding Thames from their ivory towers, while the denizens of submerged pubs peer into the sunken streets like specimens in an aquarium.

Hired by notorious underworld figure Alexandra Bastet, Leo Noiret uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that stretches from the depths of Drowntown to the highest echelons of power and influence.

Struggling aqua-courier Gina Cassel learns that young love can be a dangerous game when she becomes romantically involved with the heir to the Drakenberg Corporation, which aims to control both the environment and the future of human evolution.

There’s a storm brewing in Drowntown, with Gina and Noiret at its heart…

Drowntown is a hard-boiled sci-fi tale of a washed up detective set in a futuristic London, where climate change has caused the Thames to overflow, partially submerging the city in water. Boats, water cars, and futuristic jet-ski-like skimmer bikes now cruise the waterways that were once streets. The Drakenburg Corporation has led the field in genetic research, and various successes (or failures) have blurred the lines between humans and animals. In addition to humans, many anthropomorphic animal characters inhabit Drowntown as well.

The story starts off with our "hard luck hero" Leo stuck in a bit of a situation and he is rescued by a powerful and well-known, yet mysterious woman. In exchange for the rescue she asks Leo to do an investigation for her. She asks him to find out who she is. Here the story starts to jump back and forth between two timelines 17 years apart as Leo begins his investigation and we start to learn some of her backstory. In this first volume I was left wanting a little more from the story... a little more depth, detail, subtlety... something. It definitely has potential though, and I can see it picking up quite a bit over the next couple volumes.

The artwork is absolutely brilliant. There is a blend of realism and caricature in the character designs that is unique and stylized without being obnoxious. It just works, particularly because the coloring and shading is just gorgeous.

The book is the same length as a typical TPB but is bound in a nice satin-white hardcover. The printing quality is good but it feels like they skimped on the ink and it detracts slightly from the artwork. Richer inks and a heavier, glossier paper really would have done the artwork proper justice.

Overall I had to give it 4 stars because I am not wowed by the story yet; it does not seem particularly deep, though it is adequately interesting. For me the artwork is a huge bonus and elevates the novel to 4-stars. So far the story "feels" like it could occupy 5 or so volumes neatly, but we will see. I will definitely pick up the next couple and hope it realizes its full potential.

Visually stunning, gorgeous artwork. I haven't even read it yet, mostly in it for the art. Here's what's wrong though: not only is the image quality (the scans of the artwork, how it displays, how much it can be zoomed in on, etc) merely acceptable at best (abysmal in comparison to certain other e-reader platforms for comics), amazon has CENSORED this book (or maybe it was already censored, I don't know). Get a physical copy if you're interested in this one. You'll be glad you did.

As an artist myself, I know what kind of money an artist typically makes for graphic novel work, so this is an astonishing achievement and a real labour of love. I was not familiar with his work but Jim Murray is a hellaciously talented artist and a superb draughtsman. Morrison's story is engaging as well. I only wish there were more pages! I can't wait for Book Two.
