This book had me grinning from ear to ear! Hilarious! Seeing the cows up a tree after being scared by the T-Rex is just superb!

Are you getting the idea that I enjoyed this book? I hope you are getting the idea that you might find it an enjoyable read too!

Duck decides that he wants to go dig for dinosaur bones so calls his friends, Hen and Cat. After doing all the digging, how are they going to transport the bones back to Duck's farm? By Blimp, of course!

With the cows scared how is Duck going to persuade them back to the barn? Where is he now going to store the T-Rex? This book will appeal to both boys and girls and is also educational in how they build and decorate the new home of the T-Rex. Picture in your mind ten chickens painting. What happens when one gets covered in paint and loses all her feathers? Who will come to her rescue to keep her warm?

I would recommend this book for the entire family. I plan on reading it aloud to all our children but it would also be great for young independent readers. It is a chapter book so too hard for beginning readers but has enough repeated words that it is great for those who have a good grasp of reading but are not quite ready for long chapters or things like Shakespeare yet! The penciled drawings just add to the story!

A MUST HAVE for your children's library. You won't regret it! EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT! Bock!

"Duck and Friends: The Dinosaur Bones" was a delightful children's book. It was very well written, humorous, imaginative and certain to appeal to children. I didn't notice any mistakes in spelling, grammar, and correct word usage, which has not been the case in several other children's books I have seen recently. This is a big plus for me, so kudos to the author; I can accept some mistakes in books for adults, but it is inexcusable in books for children learning to read.

"Duck and Friends: The Dinosaur Bones" has repetitive words and phrases that flow well and are designed to help children learn to read, without having the boring, stilted feel of books in the "Dick and Jane" mode. The reading lesson is integrated into a silly story about the efforts of Duck and his friends to find and display dinosaur bones. Cows get frightened and hide in trees, hens keep falling into paint cans with hilarious results, and a dragon's sneeze adds to the pandemonium. The story lends itself to active participation between an adult reader and child through the opportunities for questions, answers, comments, the imitation of animal sounds, and the acting out of some of the actions of the animals.

The illustrations are marvellous and definitely do justice to the story. I have one quibble with the illustrations, though; they are very good, but they are in black and white. The cover illustration is coloured and it is stunning. I imagine it takes a lot more effort to create and publish coloured illustrations, but it would have been worth it had the illustrator done so. Children seem to love coloured illustrations and it would be great to see a second edition done in colour.

This is a book that I am sure children will enjoy and will reread multiple times. It teaches and entertains and is well worth purchasing. I recommend it to anyone looking for quality books for children.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great Book! 3 mai 2013

"Duck and Friends: The Dinosaur Bones" by Donna McFarland is really a rather interesting anomaly of a book. The story is ideal for reading to very young children who want a bedtime story, yet the story consists of several chapters, each of which would be suitable as a standalone bedtime story. It is also good for older kids who are learning to read, or even those who are already fairly well advanced in reading. The story itself is very tongue-in-cheek humorous, even absurd, with a duck who drives a truck, operates an excavator, digs up fossils, and oversees the construction of his own museum! The duck isn't the only multi-talented animal in the story, either. There are pigs, hens, a cat, a mouse, a bear, and a dragon, each performing various tasks during the construction of the museum.

"Duck and Friends" is a really fun book for all ages. This is one children's book that I'd even recommend to adults, for those times when you just feel like doing something silly.

I received a free copy of this book from the author, through LibraryThing, in exchange for an honest review.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great for boys who are early readers! 11 février 2013

Duck and Friends: The Dinosaur Bones was a great read-aloud book for my 7 year-old son. It talks about a lot of topics that boys absolutely love: Dinosaur bones, blimps, construction, heavy equipment, and most of all, chicken jokes!

The Dinosaur Bones has a good combination of easier sight words and more difficult sound-it-out types of words. And it's a chapter book, so he was able to feel a great sense of accomplishment as he read one chapter at a time. He was able to read it in about 20 minutes or so with my help at bedtime.

The chapter about the chickens painting made him laugh out loud several times--McFarland has a knack for finding the funny, goofy humor that makes boys this age laugh.

We really enjoyed this book. I'd recommend it for any early reader who enjoys fossils, building, and talking animals. Another great book by Donna McFarland is The Purple Elephant (2nd edition, B&W) (Volume 1).

With two beginning readers in our household, I have lost track of all the times I have been bored to tears with their reading books. NOT the case here! This story had many surprising elements; sneezing dragons, painted chickens, and tree climbing cows!

The twists and turns the story takes grabbed hold of my childrens' imagination and actually allowed us to get through a book without wanting to stop! At 7 and 8 they are past the stage of BOB books but not quite ready for Jack and Annie. This book was the middle ground we needed. The vocabulary was more advanced than BOB, but still easily navigated. They LOVED that it had chapters; it instilled a lot of confidence in them to have read a chapter book!

There are only a handful of books in our house that I would happily have my children read over and over; this is one of those books! Dear children are already asking for more Duck and Friends Adventures!
