Description de l'ouvrage

1 août 2004
In EASTERN BODY, WESTERN MIND, chakra authority Anodea Judith brought a fresh approach to the yoga-based Eastern chakra system, adapting it to the Western framework of Jungian psychology, somatic therapy, childhood developmental theory, and metaphysics. This groundbreaking work in transpersonal psychology has been revised and redesigned for a more accessible presentation. Arranged schematically, the book uses the inherent structure of the chakra system as a map upon which to chart our Western understanding of individual development. Each chapter focuses on a single chakra, starting with a description of its characteristics, then exploring its particular childhood developmental patterns, traumas and abuses, and how to heal and maintain balance. Illuminated with personal anecdotes and case studies, EASTERN BODY, WESTERN MIND seamlessly merges the East and West, science and philosophy, and psychology and spirituality into a compelling interpretation of the chakra system and its relevance for Westerners today.
  • Revised edition of the groundbreaking New Age book that seamlessly integrates Western psychology and the Eastern chakra system, including a new introduction from the author.
  • Applies the chakra system to important modern social realities and issues such as addiction, codependence, family dynamics, sexuality, and personal empowerment.
  • Previous edition has sold more than 55,000 copies.

    Revue de presse

Rather than presenting an esoteric borrowing from Indian culture, Judith employs the metaphoric language of the chakra system within the context of modern psychology. Her clear organization and numerous charts make browsing for subjects of personal relevance a breeze, and her comparison of the various maps of psychological development (Freudian, Piagetian, Eriksonian, Reichian, and others) is intriguing. The book provides a useful tool for contemplating our strengths, weaknesses, and appropriate approaches to growth. -Yoga Journal". . . [S]parkles with insight. Spiritual seeker, client, and therapist alike will find treasures here."-PanGaia magazine

    5.0 étoiles sur 5 Profound - And Needed 16 juin 2005
Par Robert Samuel White - Publié sur Amazon.com

I have to say, this author knows her stuff.

As I've learned from reading many of her books, she has long had a history of studying the chakra system. Through personal experience, she has adapted some of the esoteric systems with her own style, which are discussed more fully within her books.

This book in particular is an important one. In our culture, we all suffer abuses of some kind or another, even abuses we probably wouldn't consider abuse. Take noise pollution for example - it's a real assault on your senses, although we drown it out and let our body deal with the consequences.

But this book deals with the heavier stuff too - relationship issues, physical or sexual abuse, eating disorders, mental imbalances, whatever it may be, it's probably covered in this book. And what I have noticed is this author really knows what she's talking about - she provides insights I have not heard come from anyone else in my entire life.

I strongly encourage this book to everyone, regardless of who you are. This is a book for humanity.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 An invaluable resource for recognizing imbalance and healing 30 mars 2009
Par Kate Chopin - Publié sur Amazon.com
    Format:Broché
This book accomplished in one reading what I've tried to do with two different therapists and countless books/articles. Anodea Judith has a knack for writing about chakras & psychology in plain language that I feel anyone could understand, even if you've never heard of chakras before. As I went through this book, I found myself underlining to the point that I would just block off paragraphs, and sometimes entire pages, because I saw myself so clearly in her words. It's that kind of book. And it isn't just me, because I read this as part of a group, and along with 3 other books, and everyone always went back to this book. So often, I or someone else said: 'It's like she wrote this with me in mind.' She does offer exercises for healing at the end of every chapter - and they are doable - so you have a toolbox to begin restoring yourself. For me, just recognizing where issues developed had a healing effect.

Yes, this book deals with Eastern concepts of the body and would appeal to yogis and Eastern-minded people, but I think all others not in those categories would benefit as well. A large part of the book uses Western psychology to explain imbalance, so this isn't a difficult read at all. I couldn't put it down.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough, because it has already been an invaluable resource to me, and I can imagine it will be for years to come as I re-read and reflect, change and grow, and read again. It is nice to have her book Wheels of Life as well, to better understand the chakras, have access to more exercises, and expand your knowledge of the body.

Thank you so much, Anodea Judith, for such a brilliant, healing work of art.

    5.0 étoiles sur 5 A deeper knowledge of oneself 10 mai 2012

I purchased this book when I was in a sea of confusion and standing in crossroads about my life. It provided great insight to dark corners that I had even forgotten they existed, but that were playing a great role in my personal affairs and stood in the way to achieving my goals. I use it as a guide for my path in life and often refer back to it when things are not going the right way. Since I purchased it the first time, I have purchased it again and again as a present for people who are dear to me. Highly recommended!

    3.0 étoiles sur 5 Chakra psychoanalysis 9 mai 2011
Par Steve in Tustin - Publié sur Amazon.com
    Format:Broché|Achat vérifié
As the subtitle suggests, this book gives a psychological analysis of each of the 7 major chakras. There are 55 pages devoted to each chakra, covering the meaning of its color, its issues, the age of its manifestation, its traumas, character, excesses, deficiencies and how to balance it by resolving its psychological issues. In addition, there are 10 supplemental charts summarizing the various characteristics of the 7. The book is more analytical than spiritual, more doctrinal than experiential and more dry than emotional.

The 3 things I found mildly useful were the summary charts, its perspective of being able to blend East and West and its ease of reference by being well organized and summarized. At best, an occasionally useful secondary reference. Well suited for a psychologist looking for a new angle. Not well suited for someone looking for spiritual growth.

    2.0 étoiles sur 5 Not what I'd hoped for. 17 mars 2013

I was looking for something that would relate elements of eastern philosophy to more familiar western concepts in order to make the former more accessible, particularly the connection between body/mind/spirit. This is not that book. Instead, it is composed of the author's own elaborate theories on how social influences encountered early in life result in lingering issues that impact specific chakras. She appears to have synthesized her theories by combining her own suppositions with a lot of pop developmental psychology, which is an extremely speculative body of theory unto itself, and many of her claims are in conflict with modern neuroscience concerning the impressionable stages of brain development. It's no secret that despite the profusion of psychological and spiritual theory that has been hatched over the last half-century, most reliable indicators show that Americans are, in fact, less "well" than they were before. This author's theories are spun from those same pop-psych notions, so it's doubtful that there's much real value to the material - other than the sense of relief some might gain from latching onto a convincing excuse for one's problems. In that respect, this book will probably find a willing audience among those suffering hangovers from having grown up in a dysfunctional family, but linking any resolution of those issues to the chakras seems like taking credit for something unearned. Most of us encounter the chakra concept through yoga, meditation, or similar disciplines. Those practices commonly result a sense of improved mental and spiritual well-being, but for reasons that are poorly understood. This book does little to credibly elucidate those reasons, nor does it do much to alleviate the flakiness-factor that prevents many of us from "connecting" with eastern philosophy. That realm is filled with self-invented healers who dispense opinion and dippy psycho-spiritual jargon to seekers who are perhaps a bit too impressionable and undiscerning. A little research reveals that this particular author's own credentials are extremely questionable: a "masters degree" from a for-profit, "independently accredited" "university" (located in office space at a convenient freeway exit near you) and a "PhD" from an unaccredited "non-traditional" "distance learning" institution that was closed by court order for granting illegitimate degrees. Hmmm..... As for flakiness - well, check her out yourself on Controverscial.com. (Yes, that's how they spell it.) In sum, if you looking for credible information that will help you connect with principles of eastern philosophy, this book is not recommended.
