Erroll Garner: The Gift of Indescribable Joy 10 décembre 2003
Par Fabricio Monteagudo - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Erroll Garner continues to radiate a palpably felt and indescribable kind of joy in an otherwise very confused and disturbed world. "Easy to Love" is a must have for all those want to experience that joy. Great cuts like his "Somebody Stole My Gal," his humorous yet awkardly transcendent tearjearker on "September Song", his hard-swinging rendition of Cole Porter's "Easy To Love" and a hearwarming rendition of "I Hadn't Anyone Till You". "Lover, Come Back To Me" is a great swinger while "As Time Goes By" is an emotional and impactful tour-de-force by the magnificent Mr. Garner. "Out of Nowhere" is a ballad that has been overlooked for such a long time. His version of "Taking a Chance On Love" shows Garner's awesome ability to transmit the personality of a song. He plays as though he is playing the part of a man who just got dumped by a girl but adopts a carefree, confident attitude of "Let's give it another go at love, plenty of fish in the sea you know!!! I can almost guarantee that as you hear this tune you will feel a jaunty confidence and joie de vivre that is singularly Garner's. A great Garner CD. Worth many listenings!!

"Easy to Love" is the first disc in "The Erroll Garner Collection," a multi-disc series consisting of material recorded in the 1950's and 1960's, but not released until the late 1980's - early '90's. Seven of the eleven tracks on "Easy to Love" were recorded in 1961; the other four come from sessions in 1964 and 1965, all prime years for Garner. The program is excellent - a typically Garnerian mix of medium and up-tempo numbers with a couple of ballads thrown in.

Martha Glaser, Garner's long-time manager and the producer of this release, explains in the liner notes that "making choices from the trove of great recordings and compositions Garner left in the proverbial trunk was a labor of joy and some perplexity." While she never tells us what it was that was perplexing, the listener is left wondering why the recordings remained in a vault for nearly thirty years, given their superb quality. In any case, Ms. Glaser does go on to say that "as always with Garner performances, the recordings were improvised and many of them are one takes."

Additional liner notes are by Dudley Moore, who writes that "I love music that lives and breathes and encourages life." This disc, like all of Erroll Garner's, certainly accomplishes that.

Five stars.
First in a series of unreleased gems 23 mai 2013
Par Mike Tarrani - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
This album is the first in a series that was started in 1988 with a goal of posthumously releasing some of Erroll's gems. I've often pondered why these were not released during his lifetime since they are as good as anything he recorded that was released. The answer is he was so prolific that it was impossible to keep up.

It's a shame that at the time of this review there are no sound samples because each track is as good as it gets. The sound is more than adequate and the playing is just amazing. Erroll was always 'on' as an inventive, virtuoso on his instrument, but some credit is deserved by bassist Eddie Calhoun and drummer Kelly Martin, both of whom were Erroll's longest serving rhythm section. They are a perfect complement to Erroll. As a drummer I love Martin's tasteful playing. He is also one of the less known brush masters who ranks up there with Ed Thigpen, Vernel Fournier and John Poole as drummers who were among the best brush players of their era.

Note: when this album was first released as Emarcy Records 832 in 1988 it had only nine tracks. The last two were tacked on as bonus tracks in a subsequent release. The original nine tracks were recorded in NYC on Recorded July 14 and August 3, 1961, Track 10 was recorded in NYC on June 24, 1964, and track 11 on August 19, 1965 (also in NYC).

This expanded issue of the album clocks in at 45:44, which translates into over three quarters of an hour of previously unreleased gems. One thing that added value to the original album was Dudley Moore's insightful liner notes, which I am placing in a comment to this review below. Enjoy the notes and grab this album and enjoy the music, then move on to volume 2: The Erroll Garner Collection Vol.2 - Dancing On The Ceiling.
