Descriptions du produit

In this immensely readable and thoroughly researched book, Tarek Osman explores what has happened to the biggest Arab nation since President Nasser took control of the country in 1954. This new edition takes events up to summer 2013, looking at how Egypt has become increasingly divided under its new Islamist government.

Readable and Informative 2 novembre 2012

As someone with no background in Egyptian history, I found this book accessible and very informative. It provides a thorough introduction to the history of the country since Nasser and a good overview of the different socio-economic and cultural tensions shaping political events. The chapters are organized around these issues rather than chronology, such that each chapter makes an argument about why things developed as they did. Consequently, this is not a great choice if you just want to know what happened and when. While historical facts feature prominently, this book is intended for people who want to understand not just what happened, but why. It is an excellent book for discussion and a great starting-off point for further inquiry into the subject. It gave me some good ideas for research topics.
A good book that would benefit from more careful proofing 7 septembre 2014

Tarek Osman provides an analysis that would serve as a good background for understanding recent developments in Egypt. He covers both economic and political factors. However, after discussions with former members of former President Mubarak's Cabinet as well as with opposition figures, I feel that Osman does not give due weight to what they regarded as the principal reason for the uprising and what put Egypt at the tipping point, namely, the succession factor. I was repeatedly told that the building up of Gamal Mubarak to succeed his father as President was the crucial issue -- "we did not want a 'hereditary republic'" was how one of them put it, while the word "dynasty" frequently recurred in the conversations.

The book is fluently written, but unfortunately is marred by a number of incorrect statements, misspellings, and omitted references; the author and Yale University Press have not done justice to themselves by their sloppines. I have communicated some of these mistakes to them, and there is thus no point in broadcasting them here. I hope they will be corrected in a revised version, because the book merits a second edition.
OSMAN is a genius! 24 juillet 2014

One of the most comprehensive histories on Egypt in print today. If you want the background of what happened this is the book. The only difficulty in this book is its organization. However, the amount of material it shares is hard to compare to anything.

I purchased this book to complete a term paper and found it very resourceful and credible for the history of Egypt present day.
