What is inexpensive, accessible almost anywhere, and very addictive? The art of painting on porcelain and glass, posits Atkins. Objects to paint are cheap and found in any junk shop or flea market, and the techniques are a cinch to master. Every question is answered and every step is plotted out, illustrated, and explained, eliminating any possible misconceptions or errors on the part of the crafter. Lest a reader tackle one of^B the 13^B projects that are too complex, there are icons denoting not only level of difficulty but also needed monies and completion time. At the outset, she also evaluates (but doesn't rate) different brands of paint and brushes, and she details basic stroking techniques. Designs are, on the whole, cheerful and wholesome; Atkins needs to learn, though, when enough is enough. A^B flying butterfly soup tureen, for instance, could easily have omitted either the skies or the butterflies. Barbara Jacobs
