A la fin des années 1960 s'enregistrèrent dans leur langue respective deux grandes versions de référence de "Elijah" :Chantée en Allemand, celle de Wolfgang Sawallisch (Philips) bénéficie du vaillant Rundfunkchor de Leipzig et d'un magistral Theo Adam dans le rôle-titre. En choisissant le texte anglais, l'alternative proposée par Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos rapproche l'oeuvre des Oratorios bibliques de Haendel et nous rappelle que sa première audition se tint à Birmingham le 26 août 1846, avant que Mendelssohn ne revint la diriger l'année suivante lors de son ultime séjour en sa seconde patrie. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau prête ici sa voix sensible et intelligente au Prophète en proie aux impies adorateurs de Baal, incarnés par un New Philharmonia Chorus formidablement éloquent. Leurs échanges dramatiques atteignent un pic d'intensité dans l'invocation « call him louder ». Particulièrement réussie : la séraphique intervention vocale des garçons du Wandsworth School Boys' Choir qui indique à Elie le chemin des montagnes où il recevra la révélation divine. Entendre L'Ange incarné par Janet Baker procure un autre inoubliable moment d'émotion.
