Présentation de l'éditeur

(New adult paranormal version of my young adult book, Ember (Death Collectors, #1). It contains more violence and more sexual content.)

**Mature Content Advisory**
Recommended for readers 17+ due to sexual situations and language.

For nineteen-year-old Ember, life has always been about death. With a simple touch, she can see when someone will die. It’s her curse and the reason she secludes herself from the world. The only person that knows her secret is her best friend Raven.

But that changes when she meets Asher Morgan. He’s gorgeous and mysterious and is the only person Ember can't sense death from. The silence he instills in her mind and body allows her to feel things she’s never been able to before, so despite her initial reservations, Ember lets Asher into her life and lets herself to get close to him. But the closer they get, the more Ember realizes that Asher is keeping secrets from her.

When unexplained deaths begin to surface in her town, Ember questions why she can’t see Asher's death and what it is he’s hiding from her.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Clunky writing! Really off putting 13 juin 2013

There's some seriously clunky prose going on in this book. Here are a few examples that I highlighted:

"My lung and throat feel like their bruised." So apparently she only has one lung, as well as the incorrect use of their.

"His eyes amplify." Huh?

"His blonde hair glimmers in the sunlight and hands in his ash eyes." I'm not even sure what this is supposed to mean.

"His eyes enlarge." I get what the author means with this, but bad word choice.

"His voice perpetuates my body with heat." Again, the word choice doesn't make sense. Perpetuate means to prolong the existance of something, and I'm not sure how that fits here.

"Did they have black-winged feathers?" Black-winged feathers? Or black-feathered wings?

"Cameron's voice intervenes my thoughts." Again, bad word choice.

"Like a shadow, he transpires in the doorway with the light of the house shining behind." Again, transpire is the wrong word choice. It doesn't make sense in this context.

"He conceals his body over mine and my words evaporate into the night." Conceals his body over mine? Conceal is synonymous of hide. He could conceal her body under his, but not his body over hers.

These are just some examples. There are plenty more in the book. In fact, at times it felt like it was overflowing with words used incorrectly, like the author had used a thesaurus and just picked whichever word looked good to her. It was most off-putting for me as the reader because I kept having to rebuild her sentence structure while reading.

As for the story itself, it was ok (hence the 2 stars). It was a bit on the obvious side though, with no unexpected twists or turns. The best friend was more like a frenemy than a friend; the was a double dose of love/lust at first sight (one of my pet peeves); the sex scenes were on the clunky side and just didn't work very well for me...

At the end of the day I'm not really sure how I feel about the story. I want to read the next installment, but at the same time I'm not sure I feel particularly fulfilled by this one.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Ember ..... On fire! 21 avril 2013

Here is my original review for Ember. It still stand 100% true for Ember X with the disclaimer : Holy Hotness! *fans self* Loved this version. Unlike Shattered Promises (an awesome reimagining), this the same story with the characters slightly older and whole lot hotter.

This may be the beginning of Jessica's best series yet and that is saying something. AMAZING!!! I just absolutely was entranced by this book. I could not put it down and I will probably read it again in the very near future. Yes, I liked it that much. The story was so fresh and had a darkness I love while at the same time having a steamy romance. I know, this is YA and it was definitely YA appropriate, but it kicks it up a notch from The Fallen Star world and Darkness Falls series. I can not pinpoint what it is exactly about this novel that drew me to it the most.

Here are some of the things I loved about this book:

Ember lives above the cards dealt to her. She has a beyond dysfunctional and sometimes criminal family, a horrible "gift", and is basically all alone with the exception of one friend. Yet, she overcomes so much in life and does so much in this book.

The characters of Asher and Cameron are mysterious, magical, scary, romantic, overbearing, and intelligent. No, not all at the same time, but the depth of the characters was wonderful to read and trying to figure out who was good or bad or right for Ember was so fun. I will not spoiler it and tell you what I think, but I definitely have a side.

The lore was soooooooo unique and kept me on the edge of my seats at time. I have read books were people have premonitions and where there are angels or death, but the combination in this book was unlike anything I have encountered before. I can not wait to read more about this world.

I loved the use of poetry by both Ember and Cameron. I know it sounds cheesy and lame when I say it, but it really added a lot to her character and how she became the person she was, while at the same time helping us uncover the mysteries around her.

I can not wait until the next book of this series comes out. The story definitely felt complete in this. There are no cliffhangers that made me agitated. There is, however, so much more story to tell.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Argh, it's not over! 30 avril 2013

Anyone wanna recommend a good stand alone book? Lol I can't seem to find one anymore!

I have to say at the beginning I was pretty confused. Maybe thats good because I felt as confused as Ember, but where we differ is she let's strange things slide where I want to strangle the info out of people. The story is about Ember who is able to see Death omens (how a person will die) when she touches them.

Through In some angels of death and grim reapers and some fancy lore, and voila! A story that keeps you reading to find out what happens and then leaves you desperately wanting to read the next book. Argh! What I would pay to have a book that answers more than 20% of my questions and doesn't leave me hanging!

It's a good story! Just gotta keep reading!

I thought this book was absolutely beautiful. Life and death, angels and reapers. I could not put it down. I hope Ember makes the right decision, the right one for her. This book played in your mind like a movie, Jessica Sorensen did a marvellous job bringing these characters to life!

2.0 étoiles sur 5 I see dead people... 24 juillet 2013

I can't figure out why this book has such a high rating. The concept is intriguing, which is why I gave 2 stars, but the author's execution is lacking. Grammatical errors, typos, and incorrect usage of words make the book clunky instead of fluid. Also, the author seemed to just skip over explaining situations in detail. For instance, when Garrick slits Ember's throat. She digs her hands into the soil, and draws life from nature to heal instantly. Really? That concept comes out of nowhere, and then isn't explained at just happens. (Perhaps the author intended this to be foreshadowing, and will be explained in another book? If that's the case, it didn't work. It seemed more like the author confused her plot lines than actual foreshadowing.) Then Garrick stabs her in the leg. No healing this time, though. Ember gets up and limps off into the woods. Where is the knife? Did she remove it? Why didn't she heal instantly this time? And, seriously, what happened to that blasted knife?! I wanted to enjoy this book, but just...didn't.
