Pauvre musicalement (beaucoup d'esbroufe), nul acoustiquement !

Four stars for missing material. The insert, written by Keith Emerson, states that "Hoedown" and "Tarkus" were performed but not recorded due to problems. That being said, this is the Montreal show with the orchestra. I, then, have no idea what the "Works-Live" CD set is, although I own it. It appears to be a combination of this show and some other show from the tour that followed the release of Works II. One can tell from the inclusion of several Works II compositions, including "Peter Gunn Theme," "Show Me The Way To Go Home," and "Watching Over You."
Checking on assorted boots I own, I'm quite sure this is the case. It would help to clear up the discrepancy. Anyway, "Live in Montreal" has "Pirates" in its orchestral glory. That was missing from "Works-Live". So, I'm still a happy ELP fan.

HASH(0x98af9f48) étoiles sur 5 Poor audio quality and missing staple songs make this an album for ELP completists only 25 décembre 2013

Emerson, Lake, and Palmer are known as progressive rock pioneers who were successful in combining rock and symphonic sound. Unfortunately, that type of hybrid sound is not present in the CD version of "Live in Montreal 1977". As Keith Emerson stated in the liner notes found with the CD, the concert was impacted by downed FoH lines that dramatically affected the mixing and recording of the different tracks. As a result, a couple of staple ELP songs (Tarkus and Hoedown) were excluded from the CD because a mobile recording unit failed during the performance.

Emerson tried to salvage the tracks in his mixing studios and was able to reproduce some decent audio quality on some of the songs which kept this CD from being knocked down to 1 or 2 stars. As I've noted below, the best quality seems to be found on songs with a limited or lesser amount of orchestra in the background.

Side 1
Abaddon's Bolero - decent track and recording
Karn Evil 9 - sound is distant with overpowering bass
The Enemy God Dances with the Black Spirits - muffled, hard to pick up instruments
C'est La Vie - sounds like it's been recorded off of TV
Lucky Man - one of the better tracks sound-wise
Piano Concerto No. 1, 3rd Movement - pretty fair sound overall
Closer to Believing - clear and solid

Side 2
Knife Edge - surprising good
Tank - disappointing; muddy, heavy bass make it almost impossible to listen to
Nutrocker - distant sound
Pirates - bass is overpowering
Fanfare for the Common Man - decent in spots, but bass issue and overpowering orchestration still present

ELP have recording 9 studio albums (all with great general audio quality, by the way) and some 19 live albums with mixed results. Unfortunately, "Live in Montreal 1977" is near the bottom of the list of audio quality found in those live albums. If you're new to the band, avoid this CD at all costs and pick up ANY of the studios and enjoy this creative and progressive band. If you're more into live albums, then this reviewer wholeheartedly recommends, "Live at the Mar Y Sol Festival 72" and "Live at Nassau Coliseum 78".

HASH(0x99687f18) étoiles sur 5 It's not possible to get a recording of this concert with the full sound 9 décembre 2013

It's not possible to get a recording of this concert with the full sound; As Keith Emerson stated in Keyboard magazine (back in 1977, as I recall), "the 24-track mixing board broke down", so sadly only a pale fragment of the actual sound of every single instrument of both ELP and of the orchestra/big band * all being individually miked, mixed, and run through the large PA system they were hauling, was recorded.

- Martin Totusek

* … that they and conductor Godfrey Salmon had auditioned many musicians for, and then massively rehearsed with; Keith Emerson said that the horn sections "were unbelievable - they were like synthesizers - they could play anything…", and it was the first time he got to hear the orchestral version of his "Abaddon's Bolero" with the trumpet sections played the way he wanted them to be played (contrasting with the earlier experience he and conductor John Mayer had recording "Abaddon's Bolero" with the London Philharmonic Orchestra); Given that a number of other large acts of the late 1970s were closely watching to see if ELP could indeed have permanent orchestra/big band - which meant that they too could organize permanent orchestra/big bands of their own, the opposition from the national A.F.M. E-Board of that era and it's ruling that they could only move 100 miles a day (as Emerson stated), lead to a situation where ELP couldn't financially sustain having the orchestra/big band, as ELP had planned to have each concert 500 miles or more geographically apart, so that each large venue would be completely filled so they would break even on the costs of hauling such a large number of musicians and equipment; As a result of this, I believe there were 12 performances with the orchestra/big band (Emerson stated that is was absolutely heart-breaking when they had to break up the orchestra/big band...), and ongoing live musician employment opportunities that would have existed both with ELP and with the other major musical acts of that time that were ready to follow in ELP's footsteps, sadly did not come to pass.

Basically this is a mix of WORKS LIVE and the ELP- LIVE AT OLYMPIC STADIUM MONTREAL DVD with audio-rip. I was hoping for a remastered/restored version but I guess the technology isn't quite there yet. Some of the tracks sound quite clear (Bolero,Knife Edge,Closer to Believing) while others like(Karn Evil 9, Nutrocker,Pirates) are muddy sounding almost like a bad soundboard version. I read and know about the taping issues the band had about the show but there must be better soundboard versions with the orchestral than this. For die-hard ELP fans only.

I was at the opening night in MSG with the orchestra. It was an experience I'll NEVER forget. Finally there is a recording with the orchestra to rekindle the memories.
